Firefox 3.6 beta 5 Ghostery not allowing Firefox to be released/High CPU usage
I'm using Firefox 3.6 beta 5, and every time I close out of the browser, firefox will either take a long time to end the process with increased cpu usage even though firefox appears closed, or the firefox process will never be killed, and cpu usage goes thru the roof. Thus requiring to manually kill firefox in task manager. Windows 7 x64. I know this is Ghostery causing it, as I have run tests in disabling and running without, and re enabling to have the bug come right back. I hope this will be looked into and fixed, as this is the only reason I can not use Ghostery anymore, and I wish I could.

I’m experiencing the same problem, same browser and OS. I can report from a friend that he discovered the bug yesterday on the latest Fx3.5 with WinXP (SP3, 32bit).

Same OS , same problem.
Firefox 3.5.7 als gives the same error:http://getsatisfaction.com/ghostery/t... -
-
Same problem, also suffering non-closing Windows at system shutdown/reboot ...
"Ending Program -n"..... -
-
Same issue here - FF357 won't close, hangs 80-100% CPU, needs taskmgr to end process. Running on WinXPproSP3/32. Disabled Ghostery, problem solved. Lots of hits on google for this, even on the Linux side. David, we need you! Good luck.

Same Problem, FF357, CPU at 50%, no Ghostery no Problem. I would really like to keep Ghostery as an add-on, but this problem really sucks. I have to deactivate Ghostery. I hope an update will solve the problem.

Anybody there or are we trying to contact ghosts ?
*"Why do a bug report if there's no feedback" do I ask myself* -

Same problem for me on OSX 10.6.2 - happens with FF 3.5.7 and 3.6
Prevents Firefox from quitting and only a 'force quit' will get rid of FF. Disabling Ghostery stops the problem. -
-
I guess this issue is just being ignored. No response from the developer after all this time, and multiple users confirming it on different sites.

I am having this problem as well, with 3.5.7 on Ubuntu 9.1 but NOT on windows 7 x32. Which is a bummer because I'm starting to prefer Ubuntu and I really enjoy your add-on.

Hello Everyone. Thank you for keeping up on driving the point home on how this is affecting your use of Ghostery. We have noted the magnitude of the issue, and appreciate all the detailed feedback & are looking into the situation presently. More info on this coming your way as soon as we have some answers.

disabled for now - but will enable/redownload once issue is solved.. another question: do i need ghostery if i'm using adblockplus?
-
-
@ kaleesh.warrior: yeah mate they do different things. Adblock stops adverts from loading while Ghostery identifies and stops scripts.
Same issue here. Win 7, Firefox 3.5.7. Firefox.exe still running after close using approx 50% cpu until manual extermination via task manager. -
-
Same problem here. Linux Mint 8/Ubuntu 9.10, Firefox 3.5.7/3.6. Firefox and firefox-bin processes still running after close. Cpu use rapidly climbs to 100% until process is killed using System Monitor.
I will continue to use Ghostery because I find it to be a helpful privacy-enhancing extension and it is no big deal to kill the Fx processes thru System Monitor, but hopefully this issue will be addressed eventually. -
-
I also have FF357 with ghostery. After reading ALL the posts about this particular combination and the problem closing FF, I disabled ghostery. Will have to see if this fixes the problem. I REALLY WANT GHOSTERY TO WORK WITH FF THOUGH!!!!!

Why the F do I get this problem on Ubuntu with Firefox 3.6? I have never even heard of Ghostery, and definitely not installed it. I am also not running Beta 5.
Tried installing and removing the add-on, with no difference in behaviour when closing Fx. -
-
Same issue. FireFox 3.6 hangs on shutdown with full CPU load. Using Ghostery 2.0.2.

Same problem on firefox 3.6 on Linux and OSX, removing ghostery solves it for now.

Hello Everyone - we have a bug fix that we're working on & need a few individuals to test. Given that I can't attach the file here, please send me some contact info & I shall send out the file so you may test our fix.
-
-
Hi Rose. thanks for looking into this bug. I'd be glad to test, but how do I go about giving you contact info? An email, without posting it in public view? I don't see any option for PM's or contacting.
-
-
Hi all, to receive your download link for the test release please proceed here and fill in your email address. Thanks!

Hi. Have filled in my email last night.. Still waiting for the test build.
-
-
On second thought. Don't bother sending me the test build. Developer sold Ghostery out to Better Advertising, then forget it.
No wonder he never bothered with responding to my problem. -
-
Hello Dave,
The fix was emailed to you yesterday. Please let me know if you didn't receive it. We at Better Advertising are working very hard to ensure that your Ghostery experience is as effective & efficient as possible & David is very much a part of that advisement. I do apologize for the frustration this bug has caused. We're working on a solution. -
-
The new version seems to be working with FF 3.6 on OSX as well as Linux.

I just tested the fixed version. It solves the problem but slows down tab switching in Firefox. In my Firefox I'm able to scroll through all opened tabs with the middle mouse button when the pointer is over the tab bar. That's pretty neat and quite fast. But with Ghostery activated it slows down and needs double the time for tab scrolling/switching. (Maybe I'll open a new bug report.)
Thanks for trying...-
Hi Rainer,
thanks for the heads up on this. Duly noted - we'll look into this & let you know once we determine the cause. keep the feedback coming! -

I have the same problem. Firefox-bin kept using cpu after closing FF. I disabled Ghostery addon and problem was solved. I really hope that problem will get fixed. I like the idea of this addon!
Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; nl; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6

Thx for the patch. Started testing already. Will test for a few days and inform you about my findings.

Hi Rose, I'm testing now for 4 days the patch you send. It really looks like it solved my problem. First enabled Ghostery again. Everytime I closed FF, also firefox-bin stopped and i could restart FF without a problem. I also tested to add new blocked scripts using Ghostery. Evertyhing went fine for me! I'm not really a programmer but as far as I can see all other addons and FF still works as normal.... :-).... keep on going!!!! Grtz :-Johan.

I don't, and never have had ghostery installed, but still have the 'n' program problem, and slower internet response. Any ideas really appreciated
PS If there's another post from me immediately above, please ignore

Mike,
I understand that a Norton anti Virus add-on causes the same problem as Ghostery. Maybe that is your problem. -
-
Does anyone knows an alternative to Ghostery?
Do not want to continue using it since it has now been "Tampered with" by the same people its supposed to keep out. -
-
nangap
I dont have Norton on my system (use avast). Restored XP to an earlier time, removed Firefox, n program no longer a problem (it didnt show before in MS process explorer) Have now reloaded Firefox, as I found IE incredibly slow, and will see if problem recurs. -
-
I loved this addon and I don't want to use something else but it has been messed up for last 20 days or so and I had to kill FF each time I wanted to restart. I couldn't find out till I stumbled to this thread and as soon as I disabled Ghostery, my problem faded away but now I don't have Ghostery to block all the ad-tracking crap. I had disabled almost everything except Ghostery and even upgraded to 3.6 today hoping that would resolve the situation. I'm sad and hoping to have the solution ASAP.

The "company" is wrong (OMG how much 1984-ish and Microsoft-ish does that comment sound?!
1 - The latest FireFox Upgrade DOES NOT FIX the problem. They can say that all they want it is simply not true. (Really sounding like M$ now.. really spooky.)
2 - Ghostery is not the problem either, I never had it installed and I still get the " End Program -n "error.
3 - Even in the FireFox Knowledge Base they say it was fixed a months ago - and EVEN CLOSED a discussion thread on the issue, saying the solution was found. NOT
4 - I did this, regretfully, and it worked:
I have IE 8 and Opera and Firefox (all latest versions) installed running on XP Pro / SP 3. IE 8 just sucks as usual, lags and runs slower than my 98 yr old great-grandmother. At least she is more fun to deal with than Microsux.
Anyway, the ONLY way I got rid of the " End Program - n " problem was when I completely, and I mean COMPLETELY got rid of FireFox. I hate to say it, as it is my favorite browser, but they crapped the bed on this one.
I ran for over a week without Firefox, not once got that -n error. I got an email from Cnet/download.com that Firefox had an update that fixed various errors - i just Assumed this is one they fixed... NOT.
I reinstalled it, latest version and sure enoug h.... " End Program - n " error started up again.
Sorry to say... but I do not think you will find the fix blaming anyone else but Mozilla / Firefox on this one.
