Hi! While status bar Ghosty has been removed, you can drag Ghosty icon in customization to the addon bar. Addon bar is slotted for removal by Mozilla, possibly in Aurelis.

I have the Ghostery 5.0.0 icon in Firefox 23's add-on bar as before. Only thing is, now it's almost impossible to know when blocking is active or paused. Earlier it was quite clear IIRC ("x trackers blocked"), but now there's hardly any indication at all. The icon does turn blue or gray depending on the current active status, but that's not at all obvious or even very visible since it's hidden behind the number square (see Paused = http://i.imgur.com/Birasne.png, Active = http://i.imgur.com/cMwIBh6.png for more). Can't you just make the number bright red or green so the blocking status is visible at a glance?

Hi Richhome,

You should be able to drag the icon back in to the navigation bar by using the browsers Customize Toolbar feature.

Just wanted to remark that since FF21, actually (I am now on version 23), every so often Ff will momentarily freeze when loading a page (2-10 seconds, usually) before freeing up again. This happens for me when Ghostery is not installed. Also, another program I have discovered to muck some things up with Ff23 is Trusteer Rapport, a so-called security program banks are steering their online banking clients towards these days--it caused me some problems with Ff url histories (mixing them up, appending parts of one url to another so that you couldn't load the page until you turned off History--removing Rapport has fixed that--so far, anyway.) Also be on the lookout for a FF extension (not plug in) called "Selection Links" as this thing installed by itself and even put its own entry into add/remove programs! (Win8x64)--and *also* game me trouble with Ff url histories--all while Ghostery was uninstalled. Neither Win8 Defender AKA MSE or MalwareBytes caught it--I stumbled upon it doing searches for possible problems, etc.
This has been the most hectic week with this kind of thing that I've had in *years.* At least it's allowed me to separate ghostery from some of this other stuff. -

Ghostery 5.0 conflict with Firefox.
With the release of Ghostery 5.0 for Firefox on Mac (System 10.8.4), Firefox has become unresponsive most of the time. I don't whether the fault is Ghostery or not, but it is the only variable I know of. I was looking at Facebook when the update came, and it became impossible to use afterward. I have restarted the computer and reopened Firefox time after time without success. Also I can't fine the Ghostery Icon anymore. If I start Firefox in safe mode, everything works fine. I love Ghostery and hope that I can continue to use it. Thanks-

Not good enough. Mozilla hasn't made a final decision yet, and if Australis turns out to be a major disaster (and PR crisis), I'm happy to stick with the 24 esr series. That's what we should be targeting, especially since 5.0.0 isn't compatible with 17 esr (and that's a huge problem).
Diminishing the UX isn't progress; it's just going to drive people to abandon the product. Firefox evolves through a collaborative process, and Ghostery's developers need to be active participants. Mozilla has pronounced self-destructive tendencies, and its continued survival depends on outside intervention every now and then. That might be inconvenient, but the alternative is worse. -

Yeah, those are definitely considerations at this point

Yes, all were marked...I have always had all blocked and nothing whitelisted. I just saw the link to revert to 2.9.6, and now the problem is resolved. I can tell you that the only unusual thing with my computer (although it's been this way for a long time) is that I have locked some macromedia folders/files so that I don't get flash cookies in the first place. I'm assuming that that probably has nothing to do with this situation though, but thought I'd mention it just in case.

Yes, this is definitely a problem with 5.0.0, as you can see someone else started a thread about doubleclick (user LD, 4 hours ago). The problem doesn't exist in the previous version for firefox--2.9.6 is working fine.

Nothing, except it only exposes what consumers are supposed to see. If I want direct access to, say, extensions.ghostery.site_specific_unblocks, I can do that in 5.0.0 through about:config. Migrating it to simple-storage takes that away.
OS X's defaults, Windows' regedit, GNOME's gconftool, etc. all have sharp edges, but at least they're available when an application doesn't provide a better alternative. Besides, some people have trust issues with security/privacy tools that keep secrets. They spread rumors that you've "sold out," or are in bed with the advertising industry. Maximizing transparency is your best defense against false accusations.
-
-
Ahh, a good point. Can't promise it for the short term, but certainly something we'll look into longer term. Also, this maybe something worth implementing as a separate addon and release as OS project. Also, it looks like mozilla devtools will have it also built in at some point.

FF warning against this !-
Preferences bloat isn't just a problem for Firefox. I recently wanted to test something against the Chrome product (I normally use Firefox and Opera), and needed to be able to revert some settings. Once I found where they were hiding,
$ sqlite3 ~/.config/chromium/Default/Local\ Storage/chrome-extension_mlomiejdfkolichcflejclcbmpeaniij_0.localstorage .dump
revealed that enormous ASCII strings were represented in UTF-16LE, making everything consume twice as much storage as needed. How stupid is that?

Ghostery 5 icon rearranges other Firefox addon icons, when placed in the navigation bar or the addon bar..
As the title says, the Ghostery 5 icon rearranges other Firefox addon icons, when placed in the navigation bar or the addon bar (but only in the bar in which the Ghostery icon is placed). Obviously it should respect the user defined order and not be doing this.
Rearranging the other icons fixes the problem only until Firefox restart. Removing the Ghostery icon from a particular bar fixes permanently the rearrangmenet of the other icons in that bar.
This is on Firefox 22.0 on OS X 10.8.4.
Please fix this.- view 1 more comment

I can't attach a screenshot, as I downgraded to 2.9.6 in the meantime and also it would require several screenshots.
However this is what was happening after installing Ghostery 5: There was another addon icon just on the left of the URL bar (I had it placed manually there). There was no Ghostery icon in the Navigation bar at all. After upgrading Ghostery to v5, that other icon went to the right, after the search bar, together with a new Ghostery icon. So that other icon got moved and Ghostery icon was added.
Then I manually moved the other icon just before the URL bar where I wanted it to be. After restarting Firefox, it went again to the right, after the search bar. Then I moved the Ghostery icon to the addon bar, where I wanted it to be in the first place (it had disappeared from there after the upgrade and appeared on the navigation bar) and manually moved the other icon where it should be. After restarting Firefox, the other icon stayed where it should, but things got rearranged in the addon bar. If I deleted the Ghostery icon from the addon bar, the other icons would stay stable, but there won't be Ghostery icon anywhere.
Reverting to 2.9.6 fixed the issue, now icons stay where I need them to be. -
-
Thanks for reporting, we'll look into this. Do you mind telling us what other addons you have and which icon you placed?

New trackers are never blocked by default.
The option "block new trackers by default" has never worked in the past 2 years with any version of ghostery 5.0.0. It might work if no trackers are whitelisted, but usually there are one or two I need. This turns frequent updates into custard because there's no additional blocking and is very bad fro a safety-point of view (luckily ghostery is not a security application).
This is now the "next" version of ghostery and the problem is not fixed.-
Block new options by default has been functional since its been introduced. Could you give me some more context? Are new bugs not blocked after updating? Do you have any other addons? Thanks!

Ghostery 5.0.0 Function called isBug() causes performance problems..
Recently a JS-Script on my site suddenly started to cause huge performance problems with Firefox (v 22). So i made a runtime analysis with FF and found out that Ghostery.BlockingPolicy.shouldLoad() calls the function isBug() which takes years to finish. Whitlisting the site and pausing Ghostery did not help, first when I deactivated Ghostery in FF, everything was ok again. The affected JS-Script is updating a list on the site including a lot of images. Ghostery is taking action when the jQuery function buildFragment() is called. It has absolutely nothing to do with advertising or trackers. There is not a single tracker on the whole page. Does anyone have a suggestion how to solve the problem?

Hi Eric,
Thanks for the reply.
I tried the about:config option you suggested (I already change another parameter via that capability) and, surprisingly, it does not seem to stop the playback of Flash. I checked the video's properties because I know some sites have switched over to HTML5 embedded video, and the properties say it is indeed a flash object being played back. Weird, but not surprising, as I have seen Firefox's reliability drop significantly once the rapid-turnaround development cycle was initiated a while back. There's probably a reason why that parameter has not been elevated to the regular config dialog.
I also tried flashdisable 0.9.4beta1, and the disappearing button seems to have stopped disappearing. However, in the process, ghostery updated itself to 5.0.4, so two things changed at the same time (sometimes I really dislike auto-updates).
So, in summary, with ghostery 5.0.4 and flashdisable 0.9.4beta1 installed, the disappearing button problem appears to be resolved.
Thanks. -

Recent Ghostery Update causes Firefox to become unresponsive for ~ 10 seconds for sbnation.com sites.
After your last update this past week, the sites under sbnation.com all load horribly slow now (sbnation is an umbrella site for multiple sport sites). Firefox (version 22.0) will be unresponsive (not responding message) for around 10 seconds before it continues loading. I also sometimes but not always get a message from Firefox about an unresponsive script: http://cdn3.sbnation.com/javascripts/...
But the constant is it always loads slow and firefox becomes unresponsive with each link on that site I try to load.
Sbnation.com and the sports sites it links to all seem to have this problem. For example, in SBnation.com, under the UFC header, you'll see links to bloodyelbow.com and mmamania.com. Both sites have the same slowdown issue so it's not just the sbnation.com domain itself with the problem.
If I disable the Ghostery script, this problem disappears. Before that I tried disabling all the trackers on that site but the slowdown persisted, only disabling Ghostery fixed it. Some change made to Ghostery with the last update seems to have caused this. Can you look into fixing it? Thanks.-

Same thing happened to me after updating to ver. 5.0.0; Firefox (even when updated to ver. 23.0 (from 22.0)) would just right out crash/freeze upon startup. So I downgraded to 2.9.6 and everything went back to normal. I knew it was Ghostery causing it cause' a popup window briefly showed at the first instance. Ran Firefox on safe mode to disable (I didn't want to remove it in hopes they'll fix it) Ghostery then resorting to DoNotTrackMe. Try downgrading to 2.9.6 release and hopefully works at your end as well.

Upgrading to Firefox 23 and Ghostery 5 on a Mac (OS X 10.8) gives problems on many Websites, including signin.ebay.com, www.sbb.ch and many more. The Browser takes hours to load the page and seems to hang. With Ghostery before 5.0 there were no such problems. Switching off Ghostery solves the problem. -

Ghostery 5.0.1 with Firefox 24.0b2 (Mac OS X 10.7) still hangs on Amazon's sign-in.

Hum. I activated my other extensions one-by-one, and I never got the crash again. Sorry. Perhaps I wasted your time.

Glad the issue is gone, but since youre not the only one, there is some kind of conflict somewhere. Keep us posted!

Ghostery team: Can you please give us an update as the progress in resolving the recent problems of Ghostery 5.0.
I looked on the Ghostery blog (http://purplebox.ghostery.com/), but saw no mention of the recent problems. Could I have missed it?
Ghostery is a great plugin and very helpful in attempting to regain some level of privacy.-
