I’m grumpy

Ghostery does not automatically scan when I open Firefox.

New tabs are not scanned when opened in Firefox. Attempting to open settings etc. leads me to no setting to change or updates needed.

    Hi Becky,

    Thanks for using Ghostery!

Are the new tabs opened to valid pages? Can you send me some example URL's that the tabs are opened to?

Which version of Firefox and Ghostery?

  • I sometimes have a problem similar to this, using Ghostery 5.4.1, Firefox 33.0, and Windows 7 x64. Usually Ghostery seems to work fine, but perhaps 5 to 10 times in the past few months I've noticed that the Ghostery icon reports 0 trackers blocked on sites that I know should have non-zero trackers blocked. When Ghostery gets into this state, it reports 0 trackers blocked on every tab that I navigate to, including existing tabs that I reloaded. When the issue happens, it persists until Firefox is exited. I never noticed this issue until a few months ago, so the issue might occur only in recent Ghostery versions.

The issue happened again today when I started Firefox. I then opened the Network tab of Firefox's Web Console and reloaded the page that I was on. I noticed that Ghostery was not blocking connections to various trackers that Ghostery would normally block. Thus it seems that this is not just a cosmetic issue.

Perhaps of interest is that every time that Ghostery has entered this failure state, trying to view Ghostery's Options also fails.

The following action may or may not be related to the issue: I usually have many tabs open in Firefox, and when I start Firefox I often visit a number of the existing tabs in a short amount of time.

    • I don't see anything in the message that would compromise my privacy, so here it is:

    • A workaround: increase the number for preference dom.max_script_run_time, or set it to 0. I changed mine from 10 (the default) to 30. For information on how to make this change, see http://robcottingham.ca/2006/05/firef....

  • I had the same problem as MrBrian, without the Warning. Except today, Ghostery permanently displays "No Trackers Found." It seems broken. I have Firefox 34.0.5 and Ghostery 5.4.1. I also can't get to the Ghostery options page. I posted more on: https://getsatisfaction.com/ghostery/...

    Was this problem ever resolved?
