ghostery breaks shopping cart functionality

hi guys: love your work.

ghostery apparently breaks (blocks) the "add to shopping cart" functionality of shopping pages on this site, for example: http://www.optcorp.com/opt-2-42mm-x-6...

may be a peculiarity in their code, as things seem to work fine on, e.g., amazon.com

turning ad blocking off temporarily and reloading the page fixes the problem, but it took me a while to diagnose what the fix should be.

rock on.

  • Unless you've been living under a rock lately, you're no doubt aware of the firestorm of protest surrounding canvas fingerprinting. Here's the discussion topic in this forum in case you need background information:

Opt Telescopes has done something truly evil.

Their site is booby-trapped to break if you refuse to allow them to inflict unusually invasive tracking, by tying AddThis to their shopping cart via a script combiner. This is wrong in many ways (mashing unrelated scripts together is never a good idea), but forcing one of the most pernicious trackers down your throat is pretty much unforgivable.

Under no circumstances would I recommend shopping online with them. If you still want to do business with a company that's demonstrating unethical behavior, pick up the phone, and place your order the old-fashioned way.

Alert your friends! Spread the word on social media: suggest they boycott this company (@OPT_Telescopes on Twitter, OPTTelescopes on Facebook) unless and until they remove all traces of AddThis from their website (and don't thumb their nose at you and replace it with something just as bad). Make sure they understand the gravity of the danger they're subjecting their customers to, by citing one of the many published articles about this issue. (Note that they did not design their own website; they hired an outside company, so there's bound to be some finger pointing — and "plausible deniability.")

Opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect any official position of Ghostery, Inc.
