Ghostery causing Firefox to freeze when using ebay

I'm using ubuntu 11.10 and since upgrading to Firefox 10.0.1 I have had a problem that I've traced to Ghostery.

Viewing an ebay listing with images, if I click on the 'Enlarge' link (which uses JavaScript) to enlarge a photo then Firefox freezes and CPU usage goes up by 20 to 30%. I cannot change to other tabs or do anything other than to quit Firefox. If I disable Ghostery then the problem does not occur.

Please help to fix this!

  • I think I've just fixed my own problem!

I now know there is a potential conflict between Ghostery and the Advertising Cookie Opt-out Plugin. Sure enough, disabling Advertising Cookie Opt-out Plugin fixes the problem with Ghostery :-)

Anyone having problems with browser freezes that can be traced to Ghostery should try disabling other plugins such as Advertising Cookie Opt-out if you have it installed.

Thanks to the developers of Ghostery for a great plugin (but please publicise the conflicts with other plugins such as the one above).

  • Hi Bill,

As you've discovered, Advertising Cookie Opt-out Plugin and Ghostery's cookie protection feature don't mix well. Here is the message from the latest Ghostery's options page:

"Warning! When combined with other cookie monitoring addons such as Beef Taco, Cookie Monster, and Google Opt-Out, this feature can cause unresponsive script errors. If you experience this error, please try disabling this feature or conflicting addons."

Since the above warning is easy to miss (especially when you had Ghostery first and installed the conflicting add-on later), we also made plans to add active known conflict detection: in the future, Ghostery will tell you its cookie protection has been disabled because it will cause problems when used in parallel with certain other add-ons.

  • Thank you, Alexei, for your reply.

Ghostery is brilliant and I've been using it for ages and recommending it to other people. I think your plans for active known conflict detection is a good one.

Thank you for making Ghostery :-)
