Ghostery IE Add-on 3.0 exhibiting strange behavior Vista sp2 IE9

Please excuse new topic as it is related to my "Ghostery not working" 1\30\13.

Vista sp2
IE9-Ghostery\Add-on\Fanboy tracking protection
Chrome-Ghostery ext\AD Block Plus-Easylist tracking protection
Eset Nod32 v6 AV
Windows Defender
PCTools FW Plus

After installation, the automatic configuration wizard went into an endless connect loop. I was able to close and reopen IE. The icon was there as well the id tooltip, but clicking on the icon did nothing. I returned to your site and suddenly the icon showed (0) blocks. I was then able to configure Ghostery. I then visited other sites; the icon returned to its dormant state with no activity shown. I returned to your site and the icon\button began working again. I uninstalled\reinstalled and the program operated exactly as before. I went to IE Manage Add-ons where Ghostery was enabled, but disable option was greyed out. I then compared pages with Chrome and discovered that Ghostery IE seemed to be functioning even though the icon did not work (except when at your site). I suspect UAC\install conflict but haven't had the time to investigate. Ghostery 2.4.2 worked fine in its limited capacity. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Addendum: When using the Google log in (Learn more) feature to post this problem, the icon worked again.

We are working on fixing an issue with the setup wizard startup. After you download Ghostery, the browser closes and reopens. On that page you should see "Ghostery is loading"... on that page .. if you stop and refresh that page.. the wizard should start..

As far as the intermittent blocking.. could you give some examples of pages that worked and those that didn't? In order for the alert bubble to show, the page needs to completely load, which could still be happening after the progress circle disappears. This is a limitation of IE that we are trying to work around.

Because of the way we need to implement the add-on the Enable/Disable feature cannot be accessed by that screen. You can use the Play/Pause feature on the bottom left portion of the on page menu > clicking on the icon.

We really appreciate the feedback as this version is still in it's early phase.

    Screenshots would be most helpful.

    And again.. Thank you!

  • All Ghostery option changes were only able to be done when I navigated IE9 to your site. The purple bubble appeared only at "learn more" (Google) when signing to reply in the post. The dropdown only appeared at your site, and only in the initial tab opened at your site. When opening a new window at your site, dropdown worked. The icon and dropdown have only worked at your site, though the icon appears whenever IE is open. As shown in the screenshots, some blocking appears to be taking place when Ghostery is active\running. Ghostery has been allowed in the browser and is excluded from AV monitoring. Ghostery full through firewall. Hope I can help.

Just reporting a few new oddities. I have consistently gotten the purple bubble to work on Google sites. In fact, the program (appears to) work\works 100% correctly only at Google sites, while the dropdown, GUI, etc. work at your site as well, but nowhere else. The program icon did not update when moving from the Google site to your site. Blocking does seem to continue to function.

Hulu ads in videos were blocked on Sunday but not Monday, but that may have been a Fanboy list problem.

Hope to be of continued help.

That was my next thought as well. I haven't noticed a difference as of yet. Here are the requested screenshots.

As an aside, the HP Smart Print feature doesn't really work, and is definitely a Vista UAC issue. I suspect a Vista IE9 integration issue that Microsoft seems more than willing to allow. Microsoft's priorities are sorely missplaced. Anybody have the clout to effect change there? Sorry for the rant and maybe we can figure this out. Thanks again.

I have noticed an interesting occurence with our\my problem. With IE open, running SlimCleaner (similar to CCleaner) and allowing this program to close the browser and reopen it as part of the cleaning process, full Ghostery function occurs, but only during that exact browser session. If I close the browser and reopen, Ghostery functionality reverts to the previously noted diminished operation. This is consistently reproducible. This makes me think of some initialization problem regarding add on communication with Temporary Internet files\cache\cookies. ChromeFrame enabled or disabled seemed to have no impact on Ghostery operation on this system. Unfortunately I am not a progammer, but it makes me think a fix could be close at hand. Hope to be of help.

    Pete,

The Ghostery IE icon always shows. The icon works on this system only:

    1. At the Ghostery site and
    2. At Google sites under normal operation,
    or
    3. After the automated browser open\close process as part of system cleaning using SlimCleaner (or CCleaner), on all sites, in that initial browsing session only. After closing the browser, behavior reverts to conditions 1 and 2.

Ghostery seems to be blocking correctly as indicated by the "news site active" screenshot posted earlier, at all times. No Chrome problems indicated.
    Hope to be of help.

    Oh, Oh.
With Ghostery IE add on running, at general commercial sites hovering over the browser back button reveals an advertising widget address. The browser then requires double clicking to go back to the previous page. When the noted address is added to IE restricted site list, the back button hover just reveals another different address. With the add on paused, normal browser behavior is exhibited. Is this perhaps Ghostrank at work? I am unable to send screenshots of this behavior.
    Hope to be of help.

  • Felix,

In this specific example at the Jeep.com site (similar behavior at others), when negoiating back from deeper in the site, Ghostery add on running, hovering over the back button before pressing revealed this : back to "https://fls.doubleclick.net/activityi...=..... ", and reqiured a double click to go back a page. With the add on paused, the hovering revealed: back to "Jeep...... ", the correct page name, and happened with a single click. Ghostrank is disabled. Problem with only the IE add on.
    Hope to help.
