Ghostery's blocking breaks functionality on websites

If you use Ghostery to block unwanted page elements, and you come across a site that's broken because of Ghostery's blocking, you can help all Ghostery users by describing the problem in this thread.

These kinds of problems come up because you blocked something the site (unreasonably) depends on.

A common example would be Omniture, a tracking/analytics company. A page might issue a call to its embedded Omniture bug in order to register some action on your part: perhaps clicking "next" in a slideshow, or adding an item to your cart.

That call is directly tied to whatever it is you were trying to do, so that if the call fails (when Omniture is unexpectedly absent, for instance), your action fails as well.

Ghostery for Firefox and Opera includes surrogate script support. Surrogate scripts supplied by Ghostery provide the code to allow sites to continue to work even when the page elements they require had gotten blocked.

Surrogate support is on the way to Ghostery for Chrome and Safari.

Thanks for using and contributing to Ghostery!

Ghostery breaks Battlefield 3's Battlelog web application when using the Chrome extension. Denies certain page loads and randomly disabled game launching. http://battlelog.battlefield.com/ is the domain in question.

The exact pages are related to viewing player statistics (unlock status, vehicle stats, awards, etc.).

  • I've had trouble with ESPN's main page (using Ghostery 2.7.1 on Firefox 10.0.2). Specifically, there's a spring training countdown ticker that's supposed to be at the top of http://espn.go.com/mlb/ and it's getting all messed up (it shows up for a second when the page first loads, but then gets clobbered). Disabling Ghostery fixes it. What's weird, though, is that I added espn.go.com to my whitelist and it didn't fix the problem. Add'l note: someone on the 'net said this problem on ESPN's page was fixed for them by allowing the ForeSee 3pe, but that didn't fix the problem for me when I tried it.

(I also continue to see the things Ghostery finds when visiting a whitelisted site; is that supposed to happen?)

    Cheers,
    John

  • I’m frustrated
    Google Calendar
I can't access Google Calendar after I got Ghostery.

    "The page isn't redirecting properly
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.
This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies."

I noticed even after I "removed" Ghostery the problem remains and apparently removing the add-on doesn't undo the changes it makes in "about-config".

  • I installed Ghostery for both Firefox 10.0.2 and Safari 5.1.3 (running OS Lion.) I too experienced — sporadically — messages that said "Trouble loading page" because Firefox couldn't find (for instance) www.google.com. In Safari it said something like "Safari can't find www.google.com."So I wouldn't be able to get to my usual websites.

I will pay closer attention and catalog the instances and the websites. The frustrating thing was the lack of predictability. Sometimes it happened after clicking through a few pages' worth of the website (e.g. nytimes.com or google or a website whose link I clicked on somewhere else.)

Sometimes it would happen the first time I tried to load a page. Other times it would work again after restarting the browser. Other times I would restart my computer and the page still wouldn't load.

Also, I tried "pause blocking" and "whitelist domain" and neither provided reliable relief.

Here's a really basic, I'm-embarrassed-to-ask" question: when the list of bugs that Ghostery has found appears in the upper left of my screen, I presumed the strike-throughs meant those bugs were being blocked. Is that correct? And if I go to a site where a list appears with no strike-throughs, then those are not blocked?

Tried deactivating Ghostery, but thought I'd try it again to see if the problem returns. I'd rather be blocking these things than not (especially after hearing an interview on NPR about how much info is gathered, and how it is done. SCARY!)

  • A few problems with Ghostery 1.3.0 on Safari 5.1.4 (Lion):

    • The IMDb’s embedded video player does not work. There’s a Flash element missing. Example: http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi3975...

    • The search box at http://www.play.com/ is broken most of the time (but not always). Hitting enter inside the search box produces an error message, and the “Go” button does nothing.

    • The video player at http://www.aljazeera.com/watch_now/ is missing.

Disabling Ghostery for these sites solves all three issues.

  • I am on Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 with Intel i5-2500 64 bit. I am using Firefox 11.0 and Ghostery 2.7.2.

I have recently experienced several webpages where video and/or pictures do not load or there are errors. Just a couple of specific examples are.... YouTube and IMDb videos not playing, my security picture for my local credit union's web site sing in page not displaying, background images for my Gmail not loading (not all but some as I have multiple accounts). I can view a video linked from my Yahoo mail account. Perhaps there is just a google issue? I think Firefox just released a recent update as well.

I've tried unblocking absolutely everything in Ghostery and planned to block manually when they popped up as I visited pages. Videos and pix still didn't work. Then I disabled Ghostery, still no luck. Lastly tried to uninstall it, same problem persists. When I try to open the sites on Internet Explorer...all work as they should.

I've loved how Ghostery has worked for me thus far, would like functionality back. I am not totally computer literate with terminology and function so this program made it much easier for me and enables me to be more secure when I surf.

In some ways, I hope it's just a glitch with the Firefox update or something on Google's end. I seem to remember in the past when they do their updates, it seems they follow up with another small one rather quickly to solve some unforeseen issues. I hope this is the case and not a Ghostery issue but I'm covering all the possibilities. Thanks for your time.

IE 9, pages won't load after I installed Ghostery. I tried uninstalling but the pages still won't load. Going to live.com then entering my username and pw, IE says it can't find the server. • I’m very annoyed with Barclays
Barclays bank updated their website last Sunday to include even more trackers and the interaction with Ghostery breaks the site.

Using Firefox 11 with Ghostery 2.7.2 installed on their main page ( http://www.barclays.co.uk/ ) leaves a large section of the middle of the page blank. Pausing Ghostery blocking restores the expected content to that area.

Worse, if you continue to their online banking the problem makes it impossible to view the transactions on the account, blanking out the list. Several other vital functions are also incompatible with Ghostery now, but this is the most visible example for a customer, as the main page is the most visible example for a non-customer.

Barclays' customer support team do not seem to have understood or properly recorded the problem after several phone calls. Their suggestions so far have been to use IE, to use the latest Firefox and to uninstall and reinstall Java. Obviously none of these were successful.

I'm very upset with Barclays' attitude that passing details of what I click on from a list of extremely personal data (the bank account transaction records) to Omniture, TribalFusion and WebTrends is more important than actually serving the purpose of the webpage of providing an online banking service.

  • For bug patterns that contain a domain name, Ghostery doesn't check if that's the actual domain name or if that string is simply contained in the URL elsewhere—so good-site.com/player.js?adprovider=bad-site.com gets blocked. For instance on

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/eart...

The Ooyala player has doubleclick.net's address in its query params, so it gets blocked. Unblocking DoubleClick fixes the problem, but it's not a reliance on DoubleClick as such—no surrogate script should be needed.

    • @Alexei—I was wondering if Ghostery was open-source. Nice to hear that it will be soon. Thanks for working on this.

      @Eric P. Scott:

Re: CDNs—are you saying a CDN that serves actual advertising/tracking code, but from a different URL than the "master" copy? It seems like that URL couldn't change very often, might have little or nothing in common with the original, and should just be added to the filter list. Otherwise I don't see a problem with CDNs (and in fact, 99% of the time a generic CDN is serving content, it's content I want and have to unblock from NoScript, which I also use). What kinds of cases are you talking about?

Re: Frivolous wrappers—again, not sure exactly what you're talking about. But I can see a case like where I really do want that to load, because otherwise the entire page may be nonfunctional because main.js didn't load. The only way that script can load from doubleclick is by appending another script tag which Ghostery can then block.

Re: cellular data—good point. I suppose it becomes a question of tradeoffs between completely ideal performance (and perhaps security), vs. Just Working without user reports and then the creation of surrogates. Both of my above objections can be handled pretty easily through surrogates, so if you think the best tradeoff is to spend the time creating them while being extremely conservative by default, that seems okay.
    • Yes, there are CDNs that work exactly that way, with Akamai probably the most well-known example.

Frivolous wrappers are iframes or scripts that basically do nothing useful beyond calling one or more other things that you'd want to block anyway. Sometimes they're "white labels," sometimes they're resellers, sometimes they're just trying to circumvent same-origin restrictions imposed by the browsers.

Please understand that we're fundamentally in agreement here; I think we would all like things to work as well as possible for as many people as possible. It's never going to be 100%. But, the closer we are to that that ideal, the harder things get. And then we have to face the fact that Ghostery takes longer to scan as its database grows. That wasn't a major concern when there were only 200 known elements. Now that we're approaching 900, people are starting to notice (and complain), so there's a huge temptation to [over-]simplify the detection mechanism. Often, we get away with it, but sometimes we'll end up blocking something.com.br by mistake, which turns out to be completely different from and unrelated to the something.com we meant to target.

  • Since last 10 days (somewhere around March 20, 2012 or so) Ghostery is blocking part of Hotmail / Live mail in Firefox nightly. I can log in to Hotmail and can see inbox but I cannot open, read or reply any mails.

    This can be reproduced.
    1. Go to www.anz.com
    2. Click on "Log On" blue button on right hand side
    3. Enter bogus CRN of "123456789"
    4. Enter bogus password of "abc12345"
    5. Observe that following splash screen hangs (same behaviour with real CRN/pass)
    6. Repeat steps 1 - 4 with Ghostery disabled for the domain and observe correct behaviour of website advising incorrect username/password

It appears this is because of an embedded Omniture monitoring bug. I have not yet contacted the bank to see if they will change their website design - but was hoping the Ghostery community might be able to help first if this is something on my end.

Running Ghostery 3.0.0 on Chrome 18.0.1025.165 on OSX 10.7.3.

    • Hi Lynx,

Thanks for the detailed report! We can reproduce w/o having to have an account, which is excellent.

Could you please copy your reply to https://getsatisfaction.com/ghostery/... ? GetSatisfaction doesn't support merging parts of a topic to another topic.

There is something the matter with our Omniture surrogate script, at least in Chrome (even with latest surrogate definitions). We might be able to fix this in Ghostery for everyone, however.

You could also let the bank know that not all customers are OK with being routinely tracked by third-parties, especially when using online banking. The bank should make sure their site continues working with trackers blocked, at the least.
    • Thanks for your help Alexei. I have cross-posted to the other thread as suggested and hope this can be resolved. I'll also be contacting the bank with my dissatisfaction on their integration of tracking with my login.

  • I use Ghostery 2.7.2 (your download page says it should be 2.7.1; I've redownloaded but it still says it is 2.7.2) with Firefox 11 on Mac OS 10.6.8. It has never given me any problems until salon.com "redesigned" (ha!) their web page.

Ghostery appears to control the appearance of the ads in the downloaded page (something I though Adblock Plus 2.0.3 was doing) as well as the appearance of the "join/sign in" window.

Initially, I though that the "join/sing in" window did not appear because I have "block pop-up windows" enabled. I changed that and it did not matter.

Then I disabled Ghostery and the ads suddenly appeared and the "join/sign in" window shows up whether I have pop-ups disabled or not. (Of course, you can see this behavior without signing in, which is what I am trying to do!)

It appears as if the ads and the windows are being produced by one of the tracking services that salon.com employs. According to Ghostery's purple alert bubble, the services are "24/7 Media", "Facebook Social Plugins", "Google Analytics" and "ScoreCard Research Beacon." I suspect it is 24/7 Media.

If the sign-in window is inextricably linked to the ads, then it is a bummer. Also, in the past, if I signed in, I stayed signed in until the cookie was removed. That's not the case anymore. If I disable Ghostery, restart Firefox and then sign in, the moment I enable Ghostery back on, I am no longer signed in. But if I disable Ghostery, and go back to salon.com, I am signed in! Totally unexpected.

Is there anything you guys can do on your end before I go and harp on it to salon.com?

    Thanks in advance!

PS: the problem does not happen in Safari 5.1.5 with Ghostery 1.1.0. And, no, I will not upgrade Ghostery to 1.3.0 just in case the Firefox behavior happens then.

    • @Alexei,

thank you for sharing this. It is clear that it is the unintended consequences that are causing all this trouble: Safari has poor blocking support, so it allows the login window to pop while blocking the ads. Firefox and Chrome, which support blocking better, refuse to allow the login window and the comments, which are handled by services that want to track "hits."

The average user cannot easily discern if the tracking done on a login window is the same as the tracking done for an ad. I guess if one wants to not be tracked, then experimentation with blocking some services and not others will be necessary.

I guess I'll have to appeal to salon.com but I have the feeling that the pressures on web designers to monetize clicks is like fighting the Borg: resistance is futile, we will be tracked.

      Again, thanks for the tips.
    • You are welcome!

Letting site owners know not everybody is OK with being tracked, and that their website should perhaps continue working even with trackers disabled is a fine idea.

The best personal workaround for now is to either unblock Google Analytics, or to tell Ghostery to disable blocking on salon.com pages.

  • I’m Supportive
I’m quite confounded by why people are surprised certain aspects of a page do not work with Ghostery (or Javascript Blocker, DoNotTrack, AdBlock, CookieStumbler, etc.).

That is what we are TRYING to do! Block the functions of the page, many of which we did not give permission for!

Ghostery provides a nice bit of information each time, at each page, INCLUDING THIS ONE! What is confusing about that?

At this page, FaceBook, Twitter and “NewRelic” (???) are not elements required to FUNCTION, but others may be... and you have to choose between their snooping and your desire to see the page content.

This page alone I permitted 6 CloudFront scripts, and 11 integrated scripts, but blocked the Google script — as I don’t know its purpose. It could be to search this site... it could be part of their “new privacy policy” which is... YOU DON’T HAVE ANY. So unless I’m on Google, they get blocked - and so does every associated Panda/AdWords/Analytic from Google and everyone else.

    What’s the issue?

If you want to see a site that badly, edit your blocking options.

I run multiples of these plug-ins, and what one doesn’t catch, the others do. I’ve run MacScan daily for tracking cookies and other spyware, and since installing the above, including Ghostery, there hasn’t been a single one installed. NOT ONE. The average day’s surfing usually brought 15-25 tracking cookies, and those are only the ones THEY blacklist.

I can open Safari’s cookie list and see there are virtually ZERO there (only a few I’ve permitted for forms).

I love this stuff. I’ll take a few clicks of hassle to make sure things don’t execute.

ALL I WANT TO KNOW IS... does THIS IP belong to Ghostery for updates??
74.90.239.97 — it’s based out of NY, as is on your Terms, so I’m making a guess. But until I know for sure, I’ve blocked whatever it is (it does not ID itself - it just says my BROWSER wants to make the connection) - Little Snitch now says NO, forever, on ALL ports, to that IP.

Can I get an answer on this in the event your static IP is at OOL-Cvision, so the app can get back to work and be updated??

    Thanks!

  • @guy: you ask, what is the issue?

Well, quite frankly, the issue is a moving target. One day, a web developer/writer/designer uses a particular method to provide "sign-in" which is not treated as an element to be blocked by whatever service I run. The next day, that person has the bright idea of tracking my sign-in with a vendor that I used to block through another service. And now the sign-in is broken through no fault of my own for a service that I actually paid for! And it varies from browser to browser!

One could say that it is a "failure to communicate."

Or that it is because there is no "standard" in how we accomplish things in the continuously evolving Inter Tubes.

It doesn't matter. What it boils down to is that something isn't working anymore and the average user, who undoubtedly does not have your skills, has to dig through myriad resources to find out how to get it to work if s/he is so inclined. The average user wants a toaster, not a fancy expresso machine with lots of buttons.

Most annoying to be reminded of this on a regular basis.

Re: Surrogates support on Chrome and Safari

Is surrogate support for Opera in the works?
    • It's already there, as of 0.9.5!

      Caveats:

      - Unlike with tracker definitions, we can't update surrogate definitions over the Web for security reasons. So surrogate updates can only happen with new Ghostery releases.

      - Opera currently doesn't support all surrogation situations because of the way it does content blocking. An example where surrogation wouldn't work in Opera, but would in other browsers, is a tracker script that's required early in the page loading process, before the page declares it is done loading.

  • Facebook Connect is providing the arrows for a slideshow on a website I visit often: www. mamamia.com.au

I would like Connect to be blocked on every other website, but not on this one - unless it can be replaced with some other script that will enable me to watch photo gallery slideshows.

How can I fix this? I know how to unlbock Facebook Connect for every website, or to stop all blocking for this website, but would prefer not to do either of these things.

  • Travelocity has taken to blocking me from seeing reviews of properties if ghostery is on while I'm on their site (Chrome Browser 18.0.1025.168). I can see listings, prices and make reservations but I cannot see the reviews without turning off the Ghostery service. Travelocity review pages just hang and "spin-out" forever...

  • This page is an example of the problems I come across on various websites.
I am willing to admit it could well be because I don't quite know how to use Ghostery :)

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/9250...

The video frame (and the video itself) can only been seen if I allow DoubleClick (or if I use IETab).
The comments (on this site and many other websites) can only be read if I whitelist DISQUS.
I am puzzled... Any advice appreciated :)

    I use FF12.0

  • Can't login to disqus, especially but not exclusively on Slashgear.com.

This problem persists even if I don't block disqus.com or if I pause blocking altogether (the latter used to work but now does not). However if I disable the Ghostery add-on and restart FF, the problem is fixed.

    FF13 (beta).

(I'm also not sure that "pause blocking" is really working in FF13. It seems to get re-enabled after a page load. This might explain why pausing blocking is not fixing this. But that shouldn't be necessary.)
    • Please unblock Disqus cookies if you are a user of it.
    • Did that of course, but it doesn't work. That's what I meant when I said "even if I don't block disqus.com".

I also try Pause Blocking, then click the button to log into Disqus. It opens another window where I log in. In the other window, I have the option to Pause Blocking which implies that it is not actually paused. When I log in there and return to the page, nothing happens -- I am not logged in. If I refresh the page, blocking is no longer paused and I am not logged in.

Now using FF15, although this also happened in 13 and 14, probably earlier versions as well.

As noted, it is clearly a Ghostery issue -- if I disable Ghostery, I can log in no problems.

  • An ongoing issue I have with Ghostery, is when I check the "Enable Bug Blocking" either the website and / or video will not display correctly or function the way it should.
I realize that their are specific apps that Ghostery is blocking however it's very tough to find just the one that needs to be turned on.
Do you have suggestions or should I just leave that function unchecked realizing this would jeopardize my privacy.

  • Go to http://www.homedepot.com/StoreFinder/... to find stores in your area. When Ghostery 2.7.2 (FF 12.0) blocks the trackers, searching on a zipcode never ends. It only shows 3 trackers. The only way to fix is to whitelist the domain or disable Ghostery. Then Ghostery shows 5 trackers ! (All unblocked).
Thanks for your great programs, but I don't see how you can keep writing special scripts for each of these issues. We need a rule that web page creators must not embed trackers in such a way that it breaks the page functionality when the tracker is removed. I believe right-to-privacy trumps right to have "free speech/programming".

  • Is there some way to get a list of what each block does? I disabled everything, hoping for privacy, but when I want to get clinic results from blood tests, it just keeps spinning saying it is getting them and nothing happens. I am sure it is because of Ghostery, but I don't know what to unblock...

I do not play games so I don't care if any of them are blocked, but I do want to get the medical results I need. I use Safari in Israel.
    • Hi Martha,

Unfortunately, there is no way to predict what blocking will break ahead of time, as most breakages are caused by site-specific implementation details.

I'm guessing your clinic's site requires a login, etc. to access, so I probably won't be able to look at it.

However, the rule of thumb when something doesn't work is to add the website to Ghostery's whitelist (list of pages exempt from blocking).

To do so in Safari, while on the page, click on Ghostery's toolbar button, click "Edit Blocking Options", click "Don't Block on ..." and reload.

Omniture and Google Analytics are two trackers particularly known for causing site-specific issues.

Let us know if you have any other questions or issues.
    • Alexei, thank you so much for your very prompt reply. Now I know how to fix up any other problems that might arise! Your solution worked like a charm!! Many, many thanks!! Martha

  • Hi:

    Love the product! Thanks!

I just rechecked Bloomberg news and the video's are blocked. Have been for some time now. I updated the bug list, but no surrogate for them...

Here is an example URL for you to analyze.
