If you use Ghostery to block unwanted page elements, and you come across a site that's broken because of Ghostery's blocking, you can help all Ghostery users by describing the problem in this thread.
These kinds of problems come up because you blocked something the site (unreasonably) depends on.
A common example would be Omniture, a tracking/analytics company. A page might issue a call to its embedded Omniture bug in order to register some action on your part: perhaps clicking "next" in a slideshow, or adding an item to your cart.
That call is directly tied to whatever it is you were trying to do, so that if the call fails (when Omniture is unexpectedly absent, for instance), your action fails as well.
Ghostery for Firefox and Opera includes surrogate script support. Surrogate scripts supplied by Ghostery provide the code to allow sites to continue to work even when the page elements they require had gotten blocked.
Surrogate support is on the way to Ghostery for Chrome and Safari.
Thanks for using and contributing to Ghostery!

I suppose that's one way to look at it, but having said that, I really don't think that the characterization is accurate.

1. Ghostery breaks the 'Submit' button when logging in on the following page:
http://www.o2online.ie/o2/login/
2. It also breaks the 'Submit' button on support.apple.com's survey page (can't give you a URL).
3. Ghostery also breaks Apple Support's Express Lane 'Issue Description' form (see screen shot):

Turning off Ghostery and reloading the page or restarting Safari brings back functionality in each situation. Ghostery 1.3.0 was uninstalled and reinstalled but it didn't fix the problem.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Videos from Yahoo's Screen website are blocked when Ghostery is enabled. Then again, it being Yahoo, it could be some sort of tracking object within the script. Wouldn't be surprised. But, thought I'd add to the list of sites that are affected by this issue.
I also experienced some problems with applications on FaceBook, where I was not able to scroll down and the applications get cut off (like Castle Age). I turned off Ghostery and the site worked again, so yes... once again it's FB, of course there'll be privacy violations. -

I'm not able to play video on video.cnbc.com unless I pause blocking or whitelist the site. For example:

Or, unblocking FreeWheel everywhere, as it appears to be a video-specific ad provider: http://www.freewheel.tv/

No it is not the culprit as it is not shown for CNBC. I unblocked two that I have unblocked in the past but had changed to blocked a while ago: 1) Omniture and 2) ScoreCard Reasearch Beacon. Now the video shows and it plays.

I'm getting problems with some bit.ly links.
Going to http://www.facebook.com/tesco, if I click on any of the bit.ly links there I get a blank page. Sometimes I see Doubleclick being blocked when this happens. If I whitelist bit.ly, then the links work fine.
If I load the full destination URL directly, it works fine, and nothing shows as being blocked, so I'm wondering if bit.ly is refusing to work if Doubleclick is blocked.-

If you open https://bitly.com/NXhJou+ you'll see it's linked to
ad.doubleclick.net/clk;255212195;78926034;k?https://www.facebook.com/notes/tesco/win-100-tesco-voucher-football-pizza-competition/379664735425997
Since bitly maintains its own hit counter, Tesco has absolutely no good reason to interpose DoubleClick. They're doing something improper, and they're attempting to use bitly to conceal it. Ghostery functions as intended, exposing their deception.

With IE holding a 53% market share you'de think they would get the most attention when fixing these issues. Instead, the recommendation is "use something else". Does this make any sense?
-
-
Actually, yes it makes absolutely perfect sense, and much of the answer lies within your own post on the matter. i.e., (no pun intended) "With IE holding a 53% market share..."
Aside from Microsoft itself losing a staggering amount of market share to UNIX based operating systems over the last few years, the same has been true, but moreso, for their browser - being supplanted by Firefox, Chrome/Chromium, Opera, and to a lesser degree, Safari.
The suggestion to, "use something else" is sound advice. Microsoft has little motiviation, and less interest, in addressing your privacy concerns. This is a large part of the reason that 47% of users have abandoned the use of Microsoft browsers - and for good reason. -

Still can't login to Disqus. The problem exists on multiple sites, such as slashgear.com and pcmag.com.
*Unblocking Disqus does not solve the problem.*
Disabling Ghostery does solve the problem -- although obviously not a great solution. So it's specifically a Ghostery problem, not a problem with cookies, the browser, etc.
Pausing Blocking does not solve the problem, and blocking does not remain paused. When I try it, then click the button to log into Disqus. It opens another window where I log in. In the other window, I have the option to Pause Blocking which implies that it is not actually paused. When I log in there and return to the page, nothing happens -- I am not logged in. If I refresh the page, blocking has magically unpaused itself and I am not logged in.
Currently using FF15, but this problem has been present since FF13 (and I reported it months ago), including the part about blocking not remaining paused. Ghostery updated today to 2.8.0.2 but this did not change anything.-
Hi jhdale, thanks for using Ghostery.
Ghostery does remote content policy permissions and cookie protection. If you are unable to log into Disqus, it sound like you have allowed the tracker through but did not unblock cookie protection on this tracker. To do so, open Ghostery options, scroll to the tracker list and press Cookies. Then do a search for Disqus or find it under Widgets and uncheck it. Once unchecked, do not forget to press save.
That done, you should be able to log into Disqus without any further issues from Ghostery. Please let me know if this helps. -

to the ghostery developers:
what if you would show the specific blocked issue when a site doesn't appear because of ghostery? that would help us users, as we then wouldn't be compelled to add the whole site to 'whitelist-domain', which is not really good because then all normally blocked issues are unblocked. e.g. http://www.chip.de/- view 7 more comments

Ghostery breaks Disney World's website. With Ghostery enabled only the bar at the top of the page loads while blocking 2 bugs. The rest of the page is solid green. If you Whitelist Domain the page loads normally but 27 tracking bugs get loaded. This is on Firefox 11.0 and Safari 6.0.

There are bugs announced by the Ghostery staff regarding Internet Exploder issues where users experience that browser's blocked entities beiing:
1.) Unblocked when visiting sites, and
2.) Blocking being re-enabled once leaving those particular sites.
Perhaps this is what you were experiencing when visiting Disney's site?
BTW - I understand that people with facial hair still are not allowed to visit Disney websites. Does that still hold true? -

Using Safari 6 on Mountain Lion, Ghostery breaks the slideshows on nbcnews from working. The popup window the slideshow appears in comes up, but no content inside.

Disabling Ghostery on the site and reloading the page allows the content to appear normally.-
This is the google+1 which stops the slideshow working for me. Strange thing to require to be working I'd have thought.

Hey Alexei, thanks for the explanation. I do see the widgets section now - I'm going to leave them blocked for now, but how soon (milestone-wise) will Chrome see the surrogate feature?
Maybe in tandem with the surrogate feature, or perhaps just on its own, would it be possible to notate the functionally-necessary items in the blocked pop-up for each, as a visual indicator that something might be broken?
Are all items in the Widgets category similar to the Brightcove tracker in that blocking them will likely break something? -
-
Surrogates are already in Chrome, but this isn't a surrogate-able situation. We can't surrogate a tracker that actually provides functionality; surrogating is for replacing trackers that we don't want at all with dummy versions that help websites keep working.
We are also working on something like your notifications suggestion. For example, Omniture is a tracker with no useful functionality that is likely to break a lot of pages and is hard to surrogate.
Brightcove is a different situation, however. The tracker is also the thing that provides useful functionality.
All the items in the Widgets category are items that provide possibly useful functionality. For example, Disqus powers commenting widgets, and so on. -

— — — — — —
Analysis
The example page fails validation, which means there's no guarantee it will function as intended (with or without Ghostery). Even if it seems to "work" under certain conditions, its behavior and appearance are likely to be "incorrect" when viewed in any browser other than Microsoft Internet Explorer.
They're using a customized SiteCatalyst script file, which defines several site-specific functions (including sendOmniturePrintClick and sendOmnitureKitchenViewClick). These are referenced later in a manner which creates hard dependencies.
There are misplaced javascript: prefixes in the event handlers, suggesting whoever attempted to integrate Omniture didn't understand what they were supposed to be doing.
The best long-term solution is simply to move the site customizations out of the s_code file. (Also, hire someone competent to rectify all the other mistakes in the page template, and make sure it's tested by someone else before it goes into production.)

Video players in posts on The Verge do not load, e.g. here:
http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/19/334...
The player is by ooyala.com, which is not listed in the Ghostery popup panel list.
If I pause Ghostery or whitelist theverge.com, the player loads.-
Found a solution for me: disabling the "Replace certain blocked content with an option to allow it" advanced option makes the player load. So the issue is that Ghostery's Click-to-Play button was not there where it should have been!

I'm using Ghostery V2.8.3 with Firefox 15.0.1 on an up-to-date Arch Linux system.
Ghostery has just (from 24th September) started breaking The Times crossword club site at www.crosswordclub.co.uk, but in a strange way. With Ghostery enabled, I can still log in and print puzzles; I can't, however, play any. I have to add www.crosswordclub.co.uk to Ghostery's whitelist and then restart Firefox then log into the crossword club again before I can actually play any puzzles.
With Ghostery disabled so that I can use the crossword site properly, Ghostery reports 2 trackers: Google Analytics and Tealium.
I believe that The Times was tinkering around with its crossword website sometime in the last week or so. Certainly, 10 days ago I was able to play crosswords with Ghostery enabled normally. Now it seems that The Times is up to something sinister that Ghostery is detecting....
When the new Times crossword site breaks with Ghostery enabled, clicking on 'play' to play a puzzle results in the following displayed on the screen instead of the blank puzzle grid:
(TypeError): $wnd.uEvent is undefined
stack: S8@https://www.crosswordclub.co.uk/js/ip...

bj@https://www.crosswordclub.co.uk/js/ip...
@https://www.crosswordclub.co.uk/js/ip...
fileName: https://www.crosswordclub.co.uk/js/ip...
There's an 'OK' button to click. Clicking on that just returns to the previous web page from which I selected the puzzle I wanted to play.
If there's any other info you need, please shout!
Thanks,
Ed.-
I guess we should add "surrogate for Tealium" to the wishlist. :-(
There may not be anything we can do here: it's site-specific, and related to Omniture-in-disguise.

I guess we won't see SoundCloud widgets then, unless they change their approach to tracking.
-
-
Any third-party (coming from a source different from the page it appears on) page element is capable of tracking, and the more popular a "tracker" gets, the more data it can collect.
Any time you see a Facebook Like button, Facebook sees you. No need to click anything.
There is nothing wrong with opting in to see/use SoundCloud, for example, when you choose to. The problem is that by default, you don't get a choice. -

Does Ghostery report Omniture as found and blocked?
The workaround for now is to tell Ghostery to not block anything on Apple's support site by clicking the toolbar button, clicking "Edit Blocking Options" , clicking "Don't Block on ..." and reloading.
We all know of their method to AVOID PAYING INCOME TAXES, to the extent of lobbying to change U.S. law so that it can erase its liabilities in a less conspicuous fashion. The issue has become part of the presidential campaign.
