If you use Ghostery to block unwanted page elements, and you come across a site that's broken because of Ghostery's blocking, you can help all Ghostery users by describing the problem in this thread.
These kinds of problems come up because you blocked something the site (unreasonably) depends on.
A common example would be Omniture, a tracking/analytics company. A page might issue a call to its embedded Omniture bug in order to register some action on your part: perhaps clicking "next" in a slideshow, or adding an item to your cart.
That call is directly tied to whatever it is you were trying to do, so that if the call fails (when Omniture is unexpectedly absent, for instance), your action fails as well.
Ghostery for Firefox and Opera includes surrogate script support. Surrogate scripts supplied by Ghostery provide the code to allow sites to continue to work even when the page elements they require had gotten blocked.
Surrogate support is on the way to Ghostery for Chrome and Safari.
Thanks for using and contributing to Ghostery!

The headlines read...
"Ghostery's blocking breaks functionality on websites"
I suppose that's one way to look at it, but having said that, I really don't think that the characterization is accurate.
Isn't it more appropriate to explain it this way?:
"Broken functionality on websites is revealed by Ghostery". -
Ghostery for Chrome 3.0.0, out now, also supports surrogates.

Ghostery is blocking me from logging in to Tumblr. When ever I try to login instead of redirecting me to my Dashboard page like it's supposed it just keeps redirecting me to the login page.
I think this has something to do with the captcha service that Tumblr uses, because with ghostery enabled I don't see a captcha but when I disable Ghostery I am able to see the captcha and login. -

I have Firefox 18.0.1 for a browser. I've tried to pay a bill online at Verizon Wireless, when Ghostery is actively blocking and it's a no-go. Pausing Ghostery and then starting again at the sign-in page at Verizon Wireless allows for me to pay my bill online (now that 25 3pes are tracking me).

Ghostery prevents any regular download on turbobit.net : clicking on the "Regular Downloads" button leads to a chrome://ghostery-resource/content/blocked_redirect.html page ("Ghostery prevented a redirect from turbobit.net to wmedia.rotator.hadj7.adjuggler.net,
which is part of AdJuggler"). One has to go back to the previous page in order to download.-
This is working as expected. Download links on that site send you through AdJuggler. Unblock AdJuggler, pause blocking or whitelist the site to use the links. The Ghostery blocked redirect page should provide you with an unblock AdJuggler button for easy unblocking.

Problem with Barclays internet banking.
Login works fine, but Opera (11.64) freezes when I try to view my account.
The offending blocked item is Omniture Touch Clarity.
I have (unhappily) whitelisted 'bank.barclays.co.uk' to get round the problem, but would prefer a substitute script if that were possible. -

Ghostery breaks GMail
If Ghostery is enabled in Opera (11.64) GMail freezes while loading the main page (after login).
Whitelisting maill.google.com does not help, nor does pausing ghostery. I have to disable ghostery from the settings page. Once the main page has been loaded I can reenable ghostery and everything works. It appears that ghostery is interfering with the loading of my profile.-

I am using Ghostery 3.1.0 with Chrome (4.1.0 doesn't work for me, games won't load). With my FB games, things were fine until last Monday. I don't know if it is a change in FB or a change in the game in question, Sims Social, but I am no longer able to play Sims Social without disabling Ghostery.
Apparently it is not just Ghostery - their recommended workaround from their forum is to disable all ad blockers. I don't know if this change was made intentionally to force folks to disable their ad blockers/trackers, though I would not be surprised as it is an EA/Origin game and their shelf games are notorious for poking in your privates and sending info back to them.-
CJ, please whitelist apps.facebook.com or once you load the game, open Ghostery panel, press Edit Blocking Options, and then press Do not blcok on ..... This should help the game work properly.

There are numerous sites with video will not play unless I disable Ghostery so this surrogate scripting does not work (I use Firefox). There may be 10 trackers and I may be willing to let one track if I could tell which one is essential.
But definitely surrogate scripting does not work at all for many, many sites.
It is definitely getting to where I feel I am losing the battle and will have to remove Ghostery and give in- view 1 more comment

Hello, I am using FB to play several games as ZooWorld, Hidden Chronicles & Coasterville. The two Zynga games load without the normal requests and I cannot post in order to ask for items and ZooWorld does only load half of the game ... I am using latest Chrome browser (25.0.1364.172 m). Oh yeah, and I use Game Feeds as well to collect items for above mentioned games and it does not load properly either, I have enabled FB Social Plugins & FB Connect again, but does not help as much as I thought.

Add me to the list of issues with websites. Using Firefox, ancestry.com has issues with Omniture. A drop down box is unable to be clicked on to see menu on one page.
From the pedigree page, unable to click on ANYTHING in that sequence. I ruled it out to be Scorecard Research Beacon as the culprit. GRRRR.-
Hi Carrie,
If you are using the new 2.9.3 you can use the new site selective whitelisting and allow Omniture only on that page, but continue to block elsewhere. -

Most of the functionality of Kickstarter.com, including all drop-down menus, message replies, and menu scrolling, are broken in Firefox (19.0.2 and higher) with Ghostery (v2.9.3) enabled. As an easy-to-see example of the problem, clicking on a FAQ on the bottom of any project page does not display the answer as it should.

Over the past few weeks, I've been blaming my ISP for very slow loading web pages or some not loading at all. After experimenting with Chrome and IE, I have tracked the problem down to Firefox (V19 & 20) and Ghostery. Ghostery wouldn't even load this page until I turned it off.
Interestingly I also have Ghostery installed on Chrome and that doesn't have the same problems.
I know it's very difficult to isolate a problem because of all the addons that are available.- view 2 more comments

I unticked all the scan options and now Facebook won't load at all.
I think the problem is tied to Firefox as I have Ghostery on Chrome and when I have a problem loading with FF, I go to Chrome and the page in question loads instantly.
If that's the case, isolating the problem in FF will be a nightmare! -

agreed.. which is why trying a fresh profile is the easiest way to see if its the FFX profile or Ghostery.. and that way you don't have to change any of your profile settings.. you can just revert back to the original.

workaround: don't block FreeWheel on thedailyshow.com (in Ghostery) -- need for a surrogate script? -

Hello Folks!
I like Ghostery above all the other Privacy Extensions. I can hardly wait for surrogate script support for Chrome or more specifically. Comodo Dragon (a Chrome Based Browser). I use Comodo because it is so much more protective for my system while being user friendly. Pretty much all their products rock (except "Geek Buddy" - where customer support in India will most likely try to remotely screw up your computer due to incompetence - or maybe it's just cultural differences)
I have found Ghostery Blocks and must be "Exceptioned" for the following websites ...
Y! Screen and Y! News
Home Depo
Lowes
Yahoo - Mail
Weather.com
RioGrande.com
As I understand it, a surrogate script support will still allow me privacy, but allow the site to not be blocked.
Oddly, if I try to open Ghostery settings from Dragon/Settings, Ghostery Settings, it is blocked. If I try to open it from the Ghostery Icon at the top right of the page, it opens.
Have a good one! -

It appears you still have not fixed the problem related to the InternetBrands server... they blame you, you blame them...
Do you think we can find a way that we can whitelist specific files rather than an entire site?
Do you think you can figure out how to block trackers without taking away things that are kinda essential, such as submit buttons and graphical link buttons.
If your add-on takes away the buttons you need to click on to make a site work, do you think you could comprehend that might be a problem for your users? -

I use Firefox v.21 as my default browse. I set Ghostery to block a tracker on BANKOFAMERICA.COM called "Coremetrics". Unfortunately this broke the functionality of many of the links at that site. store.apple.com depends on Omniture for some behavior. One example is the scroll right arrow near the top, after you select [Shop Mac] or [Shop iPad] or [Shop iPod], and the scroll left arrow that appears and allows you to return after you do scroll right.
Also, if you select a product with multiple pictorial representations, you get thumbnail images below the currently displayed picture. With Omniture blocked, clicking on another thumbnail to display its full image doesn't work.
P.S. If you turn off Omniture blocking in Ghostery's options, you have to refresh the page in order for these behaviors to start working again.

All entries to this point have been added to our compatibility issues database. In newer releases of Firefox and soon other browsers you will see a black exclamation point next to the tracker most likely causing your issue. Unblocking it will in most cases fix whatever issue you are encountering. Heres an example of Omniture on homedepot.com:
