Tracking on YouTube

I deleted and paused both search and view historyon you tube and I never sign but you tube keeps showing me on the recommended videos section on the side related video with my last brosing sessions. This means You tube is obviously tracking me through my IP address. How can I get around this?

  • I don't think there's anything strange or mysterious going on here. People who visit YouTube to watch cat videos generally want to see more cat videos.

Anyway, YouTube maintains a "recently_watched_video_id_list" first-party cookie. (Ghostery considers that none of its business.)

YouTube probably isn't tracking you through your IP address, because that's not a unique identifier. However, it is useful for coarse geolocation, which facilitates compliance with contractual obligations or legal requirements (such as censoring content in countries where "freedom of speech" is not a constitutional right). Sure, you can conceal your originating IP address by going through a proxy, but that won't affect browser cookies (which are strictly destination-based). If you're not signed in, you can safely delete YouTube's cookies (doing so will not adversely impact any other Google services).
