Help because Ghostery blocks Explorer from starting

I need help. I have used Ghostery for several months on Chrome with no problems. I decided to add it to Explorer, and all hell has broken loose! It kept asking in a box to close Explorer so it can install Ghostery, over, and over, and over. I then found manage add-ons and disabled Ghostery. Now, Explorer takes about 15 minutes to come up (blank screen with spinning circle). I am not very technically oriented, but can anyone help me? Thanks!

    Hi Robert,

    Thanks for using Ghostery!

Did you dowload it from Ghostery.com? If you click cancel on that pop up it should stop popping up. That is a bug that we are working on fixing. It happens when we push a new library update.

We are working on a new version of ghostery for IE that we will be out soon.

  • Hi Pete; Thanks, and yes, I downloaded it from the Ghostery website. Every time I click to cancel popup, it just pops up endlessly over and overr! I saw another entry on how to remove Ghostery from IE through the control panel, which I did. My IE is now unusable as it takes about 15 minutes to load up (circle spins for all that time--sorry, not too much computer savvy here) and sometimes I can close it by clicking on the x and sometimes I cannot. After 15 minutes, the website I set as home page comes up (Google in my case) but if I try to go to another website, it is another 15 minutes of circle spinning to get there! Can you help me get my old IE back--please?!! Should I try to remove IE and reinstall? I am worried--my third day on trying to fix, but don't know what to do! Thank you--I appreciate your help!

  • I’m totally upset
Sad to say, Ghostery has made a nightmare of my computer. I went to Microsoft automatic fix, nothing worked. MS help then recommended resetting IE, but it would not do it (said repeatedly that I must close all programs when I had everything closed). Final MS recommendation was to uninstall and reinstall IE. I uninstalled it and when I tried to reinstall it, it stopped and said it could not do it! Nevertheless, icon of IE was there after restart but same problem, endless spinning circle! I then tried to download updates as it said there were 4 important ones. Only installed 3, but said Windows update 80092004 error and it would show me top 30 (!) solutions for it! My IE still cannot work and is a total mess! I am very upset that a pc magazine recommend Ghostery for everyone, but I am NOT a computer expert and did not know it would destroy my laptop! Can anyone help? Thank you--very upset--3 days trying to fix!

      Hi Robert,

I'm not sure why installing Ghostery would be causing so many issues with your machine. But here are the uninstall instructions:

      1. Go to “Control Panel”
      2. Select “Programs”
      3. Select “Uninstall a Program”
      4. Select Ghostery

Also... go into your program files folder and make sure the Ghostery folder has been removed as well.

      Computer > C: > Program Files > Ghostery

Restart your machine after the uninstall

Let me know if that helps.
