Installation issue
Hi, I installed Ghostery on Safari on a Mac. When I ran Safari the first time after that, a tab opened with the set up. However this page contained no set up, just a logo and a link to your web site. There was an icon in the top bar with access to Ghostery. There wan't any setting option in this, but there was a choice that would let me re-arrange the buttons on Safari's top bar. On option was to remove item (ie ghostery). I did this and rebooted Safari, then the options set up tab worked and I was able to set it up. Sound like some issue with the installer to me. Just though you would like to know.

Hi Ted,
Thanks for letting us know!
Could you try adding Ghostery's icon back to Safari's toolbar? To restore the button to the toolbar, right-click somewhere on the bar, click "Customize Toolbar..." and then drag Ghostery's button to where you want it.
The button provides access to Ghostery's findings popup and also tells you how many bugs were detected on the current page.
The button is optional, however. You can also get to Ghostery findings popup or Ghostery's options by right-clicking somewhere on a webpage and clicking the appropriate option in the right-click menu. -
-
I had already placed it back on the tool bar, but in a slightly different location. I just moved it to where it was during the install.
So far, I have seen nothing when I click on the icon.
I also tried the right-click on the web page, which works, but nothing comes up. Must be visiting only cleaner sites. -

What does the Ghostery button look like if you navigate to http://www.nytimes.com?
It should get a red badge with a number in it, and clicking it should show the bugs that Ghostery found on the page. -
-
Looks like a black ghost head after visiting the link you provided
Also, when I firstncame to this site, I have a little red circle with a 1 in it.
I click on the ghost head and nothing happens. I right-click on the page, select view Ghosery's findings and nothing happens. MOusing over the ghost icon the help bubble says View Ghostery's finding. Clicking on it does nothing.
Does the red dot I see coming to this page reflect the last place (NY times you provided) issues? -
-
BTW, when I went from this site to the NY times link, the red number went away after I tried to view Ghostery's findings.
-
-
Actually, it goes away in a few seconds without looking at the findings.

Looks like Ghostery doesn't work on your installation of Safari. The number in the badge is how many "bugs" were found on the current page, and clicking the button is supposed to show an in-page popup with more information and options.
Others have reported what seems to be the same issue:

Unfortunately, we do not have a solution at this time. You could try Ghostery for Firefox or Chrome.
Do you have any other Safari extensions or plugins installed? -
-
I haven't installed many to my knowledge. I looked at the list of those installed and there are a few that I expect didn't come with Safari out of the box.
If you think it would help, I can send a pdf showing the list. -

Somebody suggested disabling and then re-enabling JavaScript in Safari Preferences' Security tab. You could try it to see if it helps.
Could you take a screenshot of your Safari Preferences window with the Extensions tab selected? -

Hi,
Today Apple updated Safari. So did I. Now Ghostery appears to be working,
When I visit this site it tells me the alert is Facebook Social.
I made no changes to Safari except to allows Apples update today.
Thanks for your help. -

Hey, that's great! For posterity, which version do you have now, and which did you have before, if you remember?
You can see your system update history by going to System Preferences > Software Update > Installed Software. -

Hi,
I had upgraded from Safari 5.05 to 5.1.
You had mentioned that the issue might have been with java and I know Apple is doing something to remove their version. I don't know if this version of Safari was affected by this. But it works, so Thanks! -
