Manually stop trackers

Even though Ghostery stops a lot of trackers, it doesnt stop all of them. There should be a function that lets you add/block sites manually.

  • Ghostery only cares about things it's been told to look for. How do the gaps get filled in? When people like you tell us what's missing. If you add personal definitions (which you can do in Ghostery for Firefox), but keep them a secret, Ghostery doesn't get any better (except for you). Every time Ghostery works effortlessly, it's because someone else helped make that possible. Now it's your turn.

Part of the reason Ghostery is so effective is it isn't limited to just blocking entire sites — it can be focused with surgical precision. Finding the right margins requires a fair amount of expertise: too wide, and pages break; too narrow, and naughty stuff slips through. Tell us what you found, and provide a URL where we can see it for ourselves; we'll investigate, and try to find the right balance. In most cases, suggestions result in additions to the public database. But that's not all. There's a research team that figures out who's responsible for each tracker, what their privacy policies are, what data they collect, etc. and that information is summarized and made available through the "What is" service. If something public turns out to be really prevalent, it can earn a spot on www.knowyourelements.com as well.

There are other (possibly more appropriate) products out there if you just want to exterminate trackers. Ghostery strives to do more.
