Need Help With Knowing About Cookies

How do I find out which cookies are associated with such and such advertiser so that I can prevent unwanted ads without denying access to necessary websites?

This matter is of great concern because I own a TypePad powered website. When I used Ghostery for the first time (September 2011), I blocked approximately 300 sites. Later, I attempted to log into my TypePad account but was denied access until I unblocked everything.

First of all, have you read the official "Unable To Sign In To TypePad" help article?

Second, TypePad is operated by SAY Media, which has its own Get Satisfaction community:

So, that's another resource you have available for issues specific to TypePad.

The Ghostery "bugs" most intimately associated with TypePad are Typepad Stats and Six Apart Advertising. (You might expect Say Media as well, but that turns out to be a holdover from VideoEgg, a company they merged with.)

I wouldn't expect problems from blocking any "web bugs" — but if you're using Ghostery's "cookie protection," you probably need to make sure Typepad Stats is not checked on the Options page:

Information about TypePad's use of cookies can be found on Evidon's information page:

Blocking cookies does not prevent ads from appearing, although that can discourage them from tracking your viewing habits. This may actually cause you to see more "unwanted" ads (since they won't be targeted to you specifically). If by "prevent" you're asking about ad blocking, that falls under "web bugs," not cookies.

If blocking a "web bug" improperly denies access to something, we want to hear about it. We can't fix problems we can't see, so you'll need to post a URL someone else can look at — along with any specific instructions that might be needed in order to reproduce the problem. Screenshots can be very effective here, especially if you're having difficulty explaining the situation with words alone.

Unblocking "everything" is an unnecessary overreaction: of the hundreds of things Ghostery knows about, the vast majority are completely irrelevant to whatever problems you may encounter. It's usually only one or two that actually cause trouble on any given page. Once in a great while I encounter something that's more finicky, but I'm fairly certain this isn't one of those cases.
