New ghostery release annoying pop up won't go away (on Firefox).

Every time I start Firefox it tells me I need to update my options. Every time.

  • The same goes for the definition file update. It sure would be nice to do these silently.

    Hi chuck, thanks for using Ghostery.

    Could you please attach some screeshots demonstrating the issue? Ghostery for Firefox doesn't have any reminders for options, maybe it says soothing else?

  • Same issue. I hide icon in navigation bar, update definitions (at the moment from 767 to 777) and after firefox restart it's back to 767 def. ver. and icon is back. Sometimes I get 'new version installed' (or something like that) notification in top right corner.

  • Every few seconds, this message appears on my Firefox screen. Is there a way to stop this?:

  • The first balloon says "Your 3pe library was updated!" The second balloon says "Check out the Ghostery configuration options menu...Setup Ghostery." After a few seconds it disappears, but it's still annoying because it pops up every single time I start Firefox. If that's intentional, it should be changed. If it's a bug I assume you will be working on a new release that fixes it. If there is something I can do to stop it, please post an answer.

    Hi all, thanks for using Ghostery.

    This is a weird issue, generally it means that either the profile is somehow locked for editing, reset after editing, or is corrupted. If could be that another addon locks it. Have any of you tried creating a new profile to see if this is the issue? Here are the instructions: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_...

  • One thing I neglected to mention is that I use sandboxie setup to exclude firefox profile so changes to firefox like installing or updating addons can be done when firefox is in the sandbox.

    I reinstalled ghostery without firefox running in the sandbox and no problems so far.

  • I’m frustrated
    When it updates after a browser restart, and that gray bubble appears in the upper right (I really have no idea what it says), it doesn't go away on its own. Clicking it does nothing. I have to refresh the page to make it go away. This is annoying.

  • I’m HAPPY YOU CARE ENOUGH TO KEEP WORKING ON THIS PROGRAM!
    Dell, Pentium, winXP FireFox, DSL, several other cookie, beacon, etc blockers running World Community Grid 24/7 -- *****When ever I boot Firefox -- sometimes a few times a day, I'll get a persistent banner that says the 3pe library has been up dated, when I go in, I don't see anything added. Today I JUST noticed (yeah, FAQ's and Release notes only apply to the literate) I was blocking 216 / 217 objects, did something and then I was blocking 217 / 217 items. Even when it's set to show only what I'm NOT blocking, It doesn't really seem to do that. Just a heads up that the banner seems to persist after the download and doesn't fade away until I click on it, or jump page on it. a TINY price to pay for such a cool program, and I've been with you for what seems like years and years and years! -- thanks guys! -- just a small problem -- my bigger one is with Firefox who seems to beta-release to everyone all at once, about 80-90 times a week! Went from FF v4.0 to FF v 30.02.130 by the time it takes this to transit from the Sierras to where-ever you are!

    • I was wondering where you went, Doc! Welcome back to our humble support forums.
    • your project has been working so well, no reason to be here! -- The only thing you really need to fix is what Firefox breaks (I'd LIKE to say don't fix what's not broken, but, alas, with Firefox that's just not possible). I didn't look this morning - have they hit V. 201.98.74 yet?

      (I still remember the Laser eyes you guys put on Nanook - an Image I'll go to my grave with, unless I go senile between now and then - which is unlikely!) --

      It's what I love about you guys and your company - lead the way,and never lose customer support along the way -- An anti-virus company (BD) used to have 24/7 phone support when they were based in the 'old country' - but when they moved to the US they (IMAGINE THEIR CHEEK!) adopted American Life Styles -- and now I'm lucky I saved Silvia's phone number from when they actually cared enough to fix what was wrong!

      Thanks a million you guys! -- now it's back to seasoning a set of 5 Vietnamese woks I brought home - the edges have rough edges that 'hold' food so you can say toss in carrots or beets, then pull them up the side and it will stay and cook slower while the celery or faster cooking things stay in the bottom - a friend left them out in the rain at the end of summer and now I have to strip off 35+ years of seasoning and re-do it - and here's something cool to know: Veggie oil takes about 40 coats to put on that Teflon like coating, while animal fat only takes about 5! (lightly grease and toss in oven @ 500*F+ for a few (3-5) hours, cool slowly and repeat, about a day per wok. THEN i get to start on my Great Grand mothers cast iron. The one with the ridges and another one with hammered ledges are by two favorites! -

      Just to take this one more step away from topic: I think the old man with the beard, donkey (or mule) with the pick, shovel and the gold pan on the pack mule is really a Zen Monk heading out into the desert for PEACE AND QUIET to mediate, and that gold pan? It's a WOK! --

      Love your product, even after so many years! -- AND love that you still care about your customers! -- that ROCKS!

      Take care -- I await the "cold rain and snow" (wasn't that line on the Dead's first album?) where the bass player goes insane? THANKS FOR SUCH A QUICK REPLY! -

  • I’m Happy if I gave the right answer -- sad if I got it 'basward'.
    K. Warner -- sorry you feel that way about my conversation with Adam -- just catching up. HERE'S the problem, Firefox updates so often it's hard to keep up with them -- Where you update and have to deal with one program, Ghostery has to update with EVERY release (real and beta) from EVERY company that changes something in their code. Sometimes a code line that doesn't look like it would change something - say Better Privacy sets up a scoring system that keeps track of how many trackers are tracking you, and gives them a weight. They release that and it auto-installs on Firefox. What they didn't realize is that they might be using the same part of a program that Ghostery is using -- so Ghostery breaks. These guys don't get paid, it's all up to us to help support them. So they work hard all week, trying to tweek their program so it works with Firefox, IE, Opera, and a gazillion other browsers AND their add ons. It also has to work with HP, Dell, Sony, Compaq, and all the other computers out there - each one runs just a liffle different that the other one - if a Dell ran exactly the same as a Novoto or Compaq, THEY would be called 'Dells'! -- these guys are working as hard as they can to fix the problem -- and it's REALLY hard when Firefox keeps changing the code in in THEIR program!!!!! -- Right now think of Firefox as using YOU as the Beta-Release for their products!

    In the mean time go back to the answer to "SIMPLEMIND' (the one before where I posted all the photos of my trying to get my dog to become my logo -- but was just downloading his photos):

    GHOSTERY WRITES:

    Hi Max, thanks for using Ghostery. This is a new feature that was deployed with Ghostery 2.7. To turn it off, go into Ghostery Options -> Advanced, and uncheck "Notify me of new elements".

    That should fix he problem -- until the next release of Firefox. I know it's frustrating - I feel like bashing in the brains of Firefox for using me a lab rat for their Beta Releases, because when Firefox changes NONE of my add-ons work!!! Even when I set 'don't update, let me do it' -- they pop up signs (even with pop-off off) telling me I need to update - very bothersome. The worst part is that one of my data bands I use for research now displays blank pages until I allow them to set a tracking cookie!!!!! -- and that is a US Government Paid for Research site - much like Medline, PubMed, ERIC, etc - a data base that EVERYONE should have access to -- except me, and I pay the $250 a year do do my research on their site!

    So - take it out on me since **I'm** the one being informal, not them -- So, just in case you missed it:
    ==========================================================================

    TO FIX THE BANNER HANGING UP IN GHOSTERY (UNTIL FIREFOX CHANGES THEIR CODE AGAIN)

    ==========================================================================

    "Hi Max, thanks for using Ghostery. This is a new feature that was deployed with Ghostery 2.7. To turn it off, go into Ghostery Options -> Advanced, and uncheck "Notify me of new elements".

    ==========================================================================

    I've had to do this thrice so far. Wait until you find out that your 'saves' don' t work, but give me time to move into another country before you let lose with that one. Maybe Ghostery has come up with a solution by now -- but I know they are aware of it, and they don't want a program out there that doesn't work and makes them look bad -- any more than you do -- in fact LESS than you do.

    Hang in there, and Firefox will stop messing around with this part of their program long enough for a fix to hold for awhile. I've been dealing with Bit Defender that won't unload and hangs up a lot of my other problems, and stops programs I'm running in the middle of the night - putting off the solution to a problem that used to take three days for over a week. now THAT has me seeing red and has me fantasizing about powerful weapons and how to call in an 'air strike' on Bit Defenders HQ. And I was just a lowly Navy Combat Corpsman 'unassigned to the Corps" in Vietnam so I don't know squat about poop. I'd hate to think what some of my counter point E-7's in the Corp are thinking when their banners hang. (E7 in the Corps is 'Gunnery Sargent', E-7 in the Navy is Chief Petty Officer, Air Force is Master Sgt, and in the Army is a Sgt, First Class if I remember correctly).

    I know these guys at Ghostery are working as hard as they can, but every time they get close Firefox changes the code -- something completely out of their hands. And I imagine they scream like you do, only they HAVE to find the fix. Remember 'Ghosery' is a program of probably a few hundred thousand lines - think a THICK paperback book, and they have to read it and correct every period and comma and Capital and check for the dot over the 'i' --- **EVERY TIME** Firefox changes their program -- often causing troubles Firefox didn't even know they were creating. It's hard on everyone, but put the blame where is lays-- on the door step of Firefox, not on people who make programs that are suppose to work with it. I waited 6+ months to get my bookmarks working again!

    I'm running Firefox 10.0.2 & don't have any of the problems listed above.

    My only problem is my computer is running scripts on a lot of webpages (mostly Facebook). I don't think Ghostery is causing that. Thanks for all your hard work - I can only imagine the pain of going through all that code!

    And Doc - Your Siberian is beautiful!!! I miss mine. :-(

  • Hey Doc -

    Sorry I didn't reply earlier! I removed that guy.

    What actually qualifies a wok as being "Vietnamese"? Made out of wood? I've got one at home but it's sort of run-of-the-mill.

    Also, you just brought me back. Yes, "Cold Rain and Snow" was on one of their first albums, but I never really knew which album was their first. Was it Pigpen's demo tapes, just blues riffs? I do, however, have a great tune for you from a Garcia/Grisman collaboration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ia6IE0...

    Let me know what you think...

    Down to business:

    Just spoke with Pooch about this issue and if you all want, you can find the fix for it in his latest beta release (click on "development channel"):

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...

    Let us know how this works out!

    Also, we've been thinking about adding a counter to Ghostery. Is it something you'd like to see?

    - Adam
