Newest version for Firefox still blocks gallery images

I've upgraded to the newest version for Firefox, and it still blocks images that appear on websites as galleries. Only the first image in the gallery is viewable.

    Hi Jim,

Can you send me some examples?

  • Jim, there were two "newest" versions for Firefox announced yesterday (5.1.2 and 5.2.0-beta1). Which one do you have? (Whenever we ask what version(s) you're running, "newest" is meaningless, because it depends on an ephemeral context.)

"Gallery" is also meaningless, since it refers to an outward visual appearance, not its actual implementation (which is what matters here).

If you are having problems with a particular site, we can't even begin to investigate unless you provide a publicly-accessible web address (URL) we can visit to check it out for ourselves. Explain exactly what you're typing or clicking on (include a screenshot if necessary). I've seen some galleries with bizarre navigation controls where some aspects work while others don't, or you have to use specific gestures within a narrow time frame, etc. There's plenty of weirdness creativity out there.

  • Here is one example: http://www.wusa9.com/picture-gallery/...#

For me, a pic appears with 8 thumbnails below it. No matter which thumbnail I click on, it never shows any image except the first (leftmost) image.

Similar galleries often have arrows at the left and right of the main picture for use in scrolling through the images. When I click on those arrows, nothing happens.

Also, I'm glad you responded, but this is as far as much time as I want to spend on this. The entire realm of issues with items that won't load, sites that want all of a person's personal info, mis-use of cookies, beacons, etc. is an issue that the computer/technology industry needs to address along with government regulators. No matter what an average person does, either our information is being gathered against our will, or things are "broken" on the internet. It sucks, but you and I can't fix it and I don't want to waste any more time on it.

At least you at Ghostery are helping somewhat, but it's not my job to help make your software work for various computer set-ups.

Also, whenever I've gone to try to update the version of Ghostery that I have, (1) it's not easy to find out which version I'm currently running, (2) it's hard to find the right place to download the newest version, and (3) there has never been any mention that I've seen regarding whether or not upgrading will mean I have to choose all of my settings again.

  • I was unable to reproduce your issue with the example you cited using Ghostery 5.1.2 with all trackers blocked. Clicking the thumbnails selected images as expected, and both the left and right arrows worked.

(I also tested this page with older versions and other browers — it passed with flying colors every time.)

I'm pretty sure Ghostery isn't at fault here. What other extensions do you have enabled?

There isn't a single "recipe" for creating image galleries; while various implementations may present consistent visual appearances, they aren't necessarily related. It's like trying to compare GM with Ford or Chrysler: just because they arrange their steering wheels, accelerator, and brake pedals the same way, that doesn't make their parts interchangeable.

We have to investigate every incident on a case-by-case basis. We can't guarantee things will work 100% of the time for tens of millions of different websites (whose quality of workmanship varies considerably), but our defect rate is really, really low (and we're always trying to improve it).

You're right, we can't be held responsible for what other people do.

    1. Select the Firefox menu item Help > Troubleshooting Information (or open about:support).
    2. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire... (scroll down to Version Information and Development Channel for additional choices)
    3. All of your settings should be preserved when you upgrade. (But, if you're worried about this, back up your data!)

  • Your reply wasn't really helpful at all. The fact that it works FOR YOU does nothing to help me, and I have no idea what I should do to get it working.

I am running an ad blocker which seems like something that might conflict with Ghostery. But I run it because I want to block ads. And, if I contact them, I'm sure they'll tell me that Ghostery is interfering with their product.

There is no consistency across the web concerning ANYTHING. Fix one thing, and another blows up, while each developer tends to claim that problems are caused by someone else.

As for backups, I've been doing those for several decades and it's a bit condescending for you to suggest that. Also, if I updated Ghostery and the settings got changed, I wouldn't want to spend an hour figuring out how to restore Firefox from my backup. I would just reset all of my Ghostery settings, but that would be a hassle too. My point was that YOU DON'T TELL your users whether their settings will be preserved... which makes some folks hesitate to download the latest version.

Also, selecting "troubleshooting" within Firefox or just about ANY program is completely useless about 98% of the time, offering things that never relate to the problem at hand.

It has gotten to where a person needs to try to become a software engineer just to play a game or change a couple of settings.

Ghostery is promising. But like just about everything else in today's computer world, it works SOMETIMES, and there's no way for a average person to tell what the heck makes it not work.

I hestitated to start this conversation at all because I knew it would probably not be helpful. I've spent enough time on this. I hope you get things fixed someday, but I'm not interested in discussing any of this further.
