"Private Licence".
Are you kidding??
You want to protect people with a software which is not free/open source and even your close licence is not written...
Sorry but for me it smeels the spyware.
Not clear, not honnest.

Hi Notno,
While Ghostery does not come with an open source license, Ghostery's source code is open for viewing. You can see what goes on in there for yourself, or you can ask somebody with more technical knowledge to help. We are happy to answer any specific questions, too.
Ghostery's license is included in all Ghostery packages in the root folder in ghostery_eula.txt
Thanks for reporting https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...
We will update the Mozilla page with the full license soon. -

2If you would like to examine Ghostery without installing it: download its XPI file, and unzip it into an empty directory.
All extensions approved by AMO have had their source code reviewed for compliance with Mozilla's policies (= no spyware!).
Please refer to the following documents for a detailed explanation:

"Private Licence" simply means Ghostery does not use one of the licenses listed here: http://www.opensource.org/licenses/
No payment is requested or required for the use of this software.

Ghostery's Privacy Policy is posted on AMO and is also available here: http://www.ghostery.com/privacy-bt

Hi,
Ok, so if i understand right, the sources are available to watch it, to verify it, but users/developpers have not the right to modify it.
It's ok for me.
But you shoul give these precisions on the https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire... page, cause "Private licence" doesn't mean anything clear, and confusions can be made (as i did).
Sorry for it, and hope it will be free/open source one day (GPL 3 ? :)) but since this time, "private licence" with sources available to watch it is ok for me.
Do you have a direct link to download the sources, because i don't find it?
Thank you. -

1Adam: I've discussed this with other Open Source advocates, and their biggest concern seems to be "what happens to Ghostery if Evidon goes out of business?" — does it just become "abandonware?" Or what if you're acquired by another company that doesn't practice good stewardship — look at what happened with OpenOffice.org after Oracle absorbed Sun Microsystems. The Document Foundation forked it as LibreOffice, and a lot of people who'd been loyal to OpenOffice.org dropped it like a hot rock. It would help if there were some sort of transition plan in place, which might involve making it community-supported.
I consider the real value to be in the service rather than the software, but I can see why others might want to reuse portions of your code in their own projects.
If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.

Notno2: try
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/do... (in most browsers, right-clicking on the link should give you an opportunity to save it).

Hi,
Thanks Eric, but if i don't want to download the .xpi , i want the sources. :)
Where can i find it?-
Hi Notno, addons for Firefox are not complied and therefore are source files of what the addon is. Download the xpi file, and treat its as a regular zip file. Once you unzip it, you will see the original source code of Ghostery for Firefox. You may repeat the procedure for any other Ghostery: Chrome, Opera or Safari.

Thanks for your answer.
I've installed Ghostery and i read:
When you encounter a third-party page element (and have GhostRank enabled), Ghostery sends a record that includes the following:
Page element(s) identified by Ghostery
Element(s) blocked by Ghostery
Number of times the element has been identified
Domains identified as serving elements
Advertisements served at particular domains, including companies associated with each ad
Information about the type of notice associated with each ad
The browser in which Ghostery has been installed
Ghostery version information
...And it goes in USA Servers, with the Wonderful PATRIOT ACT which keeps my informations for EVER!
Thanks but no thanks.
Ghostery is a good idea but with bad application in concrete.
I've uninstalled it.
Work again on it for not sending all these informations.
It is not necessary for the good work of this extension.
All these informations about my browsing+ Licence not clear + Servers in USA (Patriot Act).
Too much. -

Notno,
Read the text you pasted again:
"... (and have GhostRank enabled), ..."
GhostRank is optional and off by default.
If you turn it on, you help people who brought you Ghostery learn which bugs are on which websites. The page you are quoting from explains what gets sent. The server does not store or record any personally-identifiable information.
We tried to explain the license situation in this thread. Is something still unclear in that regard? -

Hi,
Sorry for my mistake. It's my fault.
Just give an explaination: i'm french (it's not an excuse, but even if i can speak english, not very well, reading is much complicated to me, and i "missed" these words ( "(and have GhostRank enabled)" ).
I thought GhostRank was an obligation (like accepting the contract to make the extension work.
So, sorry again, and i will reinstall GhostRank to test it.
Have a good day.- view 2 more comments

As of 2.6.0.1 [Ghostery for Firefox] the French translation is still incomplete, particularly when it comes to the walkthrough.
See chrome://ghostery/content/ghostery-translator.js

Ghostery is now fully available in French, as of the 5.1 release. Please let us know of any issues.

Other question: If it accept the GhostRank, do you store any IP adress? (mine OR the adress of my VPN/Proxy/SSH?)
Thank you. -

GhostRank servers do not store IP addresses, or any other personally-identifiable information. More here: http://www.ghostery.com/faq

4 months after my first message, your licence is still not clear.
Quote: "We will update the Mozilla page with the full license soon. "
There's still "NA" on the addons firefox page of Ghostery.
Some news about a clear licence?
Thank you :) -

Hi, is there a way to view the Gostery source code? -
