  • Hello Jana,

Is there a site that the user agent isn't correctly registering as mobile?

  • One problem is that many websites force non-Safari browsers on iPad to use the smartphone layout (one-column layout with big pictures & text), which is not user-friendly on a tablet. Examples: npr.org, bbc.co.uk Many such sites do not provide an option to switch to the desktop view and/or don't bother to support non-Safari browsers. So Ghostery users need a workaround to avoid this undesirable behavior by changing the user agent.

  • For comparison purposes, here are some examples from Android.

Note that, in every case, the default User Agent string includes information that can be used to differentiate tablet devices from phones, so they don't necessarily have to be served the suckiest versions of mobile-pessimized pages.

    Chrome

Google's Chrome browser provides a "Request desktop site" menu item.

    Version: 28.0.0.1500.94

    User Agent [default]

    Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 4.3; Nexus 7 Build/JWR66V) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/28.0.1500.94 Safari/537.36

    User Agent (Desktop)

    Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/28.0.1500.94 Safari/537.36

    Firefox

Firefox is obsessed with copying everything I dislike about Chrome, so it's no surprise they take a similar approach.

    Version: 23.0

    User Agent [default]

    Mozilla/5.0 (Android; Tablet; rv:23.0) Gecko/23.0 Firefox/23.0

    User Agent (Desktop)

    Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:23.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/23.0

    Opera Mobile Classic

Finally, someone who gets it right. Opera Mobile Classic lets you select User Agent as a Settings preference, and it sticks. No funky extensions needed, either.

    Version: 12.1.5

    User Agent (Tablet)

    Opera/9.80 (Android 4.3; Linux; Opera Tablet/ADR-1306261156) Presto/2.11.355 Version/12.10

    User Agent (Desktop)

    Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux zbov) Presto/2.11.355 Version/12.10
