I've noticed a problem that Ghostery v1.1.0 creates in Safari v5.0.5. It's what I'm calling lag, and it goes like this: when Ghostery is enabled, my scrolling on a webpage will be consistent with my movements on my mouse (in this case, the touchpad of a 2009 Unibody MacBook); then, though I will keep my movements consistent, scrolling will have stopped; shortly thereafter, it resumes, at a speed that is consistent with my movements on my mouse, though they may have become accelerated due to frustration.
The lag seems to be the same regardless of website -- even while reading a simple text box, like those used for Terms of Use or other text on websites. Disabling the plugin resolves the issue completely. I've alerted your tweetmaster to the issue, and I'll send him or her a link to this post shortly.
Lastly, let me say I love your product, and I desperately want to have it work well in my favorite browser, so any help you can provide would be so greatly appreciated.

Hi Spencer,
Thanks for reporting this performance issue.
Do you have any other Safari extensions installed? What does it say when you click on the apple icon in the upper left of your screen and then click on "About This Mac"? -
-
Dear Alexei,
Thanks for your fast response! I do have other Safari extensions installed, but I've disabled each of them individually, and the issue still persists. Only when I disable the Ghostery extension does the issue go away.
Also, I am running Snow Leopard, specifically Apple OS v10.6.7, with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB of 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM.
I hope all this information helps. If you need anything else, please let me know!

Spencer, could you give a link to an example page that illustrates this issue?

Dear Alexei,
At times, I'll notice the scrolling lag on sites like Twitter and Google Reader, which automatically load new content. But a site that seems to consistently generate the scrolling lag problem is www.sltrib.com, the home of my local newspaper. Check it out and let me know if that helps or if you'd like me to try and find something else.

Could you try turning off Ghostery's alert bubble to see if that's responsible for the jumpiness?
-
-
Dear Alexei,
The alert bubble for Ghostery is already turned off. I found it got in the way more frequently that I could handle, so I disabled it some time ago.

Hmm, I see. Do you have blocking turned on, and if so, are you blocking everything or just some things?
-
-
Dear Alexei,
I do have blocking turned on, and it's currently set to block everything Ghostery can block. I hope this helps.

Let's take http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/world/52... as an example.
Do you experience scrolling lag after the page is done loading, or only during loading? -
-
Dear Alexei,
I couldn't get the lag to recur on the Tribune page you cited. I also couldn't seem to get it to work on the Tribune's main page. I tried CNN, Facebook, and Twitter, and there was no Ghostery-specific (i.e. that which only happens when Ghostery is enabled) lagging that I could see.
That said, to proceed with your attempt to troubleshoot, I would suggest opening several tabs with different content -- Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, news/media, etc. Then, open the Tribune's page and see if you get Ghostery-specific lag.
In the past several weeks, I've had many tabs open simultaneously, which may be what propagates the Ghostery-specific lag. I should reach such a point again in the next few days where I have several tabs/windows open, at which point, I will test for Ghostery-specific lag. In the meantime, if you wish to continue your troubleshooting, that is my suggestion.
Thanks again for all your efforts.
Signed,
Spencer-
You're welcome! I'll keep an eye out for it.
