Could it be that it really slows down my surfing? Installed it yesterday and ever since experience very slow internet connection...

Hi shabetai, thanks for using Ghostery.

Firefox performance, when using Ghostery should generally speed up, but this also depends on the system in use. What are your specs? Have you tried playing with Ghostery settings: Performance tab should give you different speed options?
