Suggestion for combating aggressive track-block detection

Many sites are starting to get really aggressive about tracker/ad blocking.
Would it be possible to allow all trackers, but as sonn as you leave the site, the cookies belonging to them are removed. Or at least when the browser closes/starts, do the clean up.
Tracking is mostly useless if they can't keep the track across domains, and over time.

    Greetings,

    Thanks for using Ghostery!

In the Firefox extension we do have an option to "Delete Flash and Silverlight Cookies on Exit". Ghostery looks at 3rd party trackers and cookies that we have in our blocking library, so it's not a guarantee to get them all. For the time being, using Ghostery in conjunction with an extension like Remove Cookies could do the trick.

But we are always looking for ways to improve the product and we appreciate the feedback!

  • It would sure help if you could give us some examples of "really aggressive" sites you've encountered. We might be able to do something about them, but only if you can provide specifics. Vague allegations won't get your issues addressed, but details might.

Also, some browsers let you specify which cookies should be accepted, and how long they can persist, e.g. Firefox:

  • Thanks for the suggestions, I'll start writing down the specifics when I encounter these sites.
Usually it's those where I have to give up isolating the one tracker or ad network that I need to make a video play, or a slide show function, and just have to set as white listed, simply because the site have elements that aren't working right.

But as you said, you need specifics, and I'll try to provide them.
    • That's often not intentional. Contrast with sites like www.mensup.fr that explicitly check for ad blocking.
    • It looks to me that these ad providers have some form of callback on their scripts. I haven't seen that in the scripts themselves, as I haven't really looked that deeply, but that is my impression from their behavior.
On the surface this is a brilliant idea, as it prevents the ad scripts from bogging down the browser, all running simultaneously, but in praxis, it's devious as all hell, as a missing callback will prevent the site from loading the rest of its scripts that are chained to that callback.
As I said, that's just speculation on my part, for now.
