System Requirements - where are they?

What operating systems does Ghostery work on? What Browsers (by version)? Where are the system requirements? Why isn't this listed in FAQ or on the Ghostery home page?

  • I’m wasting time using GetSatisfaction. I might as well just Google for info.
Not shocked that GetSatisfaction does anything but. Simple question posted 2 days ago and no one, not Ghostery staff nor others have answered this question. This is why I dislike using GetSatisfaction. It has NEVER lived up to its eponymous name.

    • Hi Walter,

We are going to update ghostery.com to specify minimum browser versions, likely on the download page.

To answer your questions now, extension support in Opera came with Opera version 11, and for Safari with version 5.0.1. It is always strongly recommended to upgrade to the latest available version of any browser (11.50 for Opera and 5.1 for Safari).
    • If you're running Mac OS X 10.5.8 ("Leopard" — the end of the line for PowerPC hardware), your latest available Safari version is 5.0.6. See http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1422

Ghostery for Firefox 2.4-2.5.3 needs as a minimum Firefox 3.5/Seamonkey 2.0. (As of this writing, the oldest Firefox currently supported by Mozilla is 3.6.18 for Windows and Linux/3.6.19 for Mac OS X.)

The system requirements for Firefox 3.6 are here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/...

  • I’m okay with the answer but feel that Ghostery doesn't get it.
Thanks for the reply. I was writing an article about Ghostery and needed to know if it works with all versions of these browsers or just some. I suspect the latter is the case. Doubt you tested it with IE6 or FF2.x.

    The article is at http://rhftech.com/blog/2011/02/ghost...

This stuff shouldn't require me asking. It should be on a specifications page on the website.

    • I dunno... cause I have been using Firefox 3.6 and Ghostery has worked fine. I installed the newest FireFox 22 version, didn't like it, then installed version 9, and Ghostery worked but in the new way it does currently on newer versions, then I reverted back to FireFox 3.6. Ghostery then seemed to be disabled (no icon on the plugins), but says it was enabled, but no more Ghostery in the top area or the purple window) and Firefox started acting wierd (New tabs I opened from another window showed as blank). Then I put version four on there and it says Ghostery could not be installed because it is incompatible with this version of Firefox. I would use the repair tool, or just erase it, and reinstall, but I have tons of bookmarks, and about 230 open tabs. (yes I know that is ridiculous) but I don't know what to do now. Restore points don't go back far enough to go back before I started messing with different Firefox versions. {I was hoping I could play some newer facebook games after installing the new Flash player, but that didn't work, not the newest FireFox 22 either.} Version 9 of Firefox on a really old XP Desktop and the new Flash on there works fine tho and so does Ghostery as well. This one is Vista and a duo core processor with 3GB ram; older one is but 1GB with XP and a Celeron one core processor. If I could get this to work the way I used to be able to, it would be fine. Or, better yet some way to record my bookmarks and tabs, then I would just reinall it after deleting it. (the restore tabs plug-in I got also seems to not work anymore either.) I found one plugin that said it could record backups of bookmarks/extensions/configuration, but that seemed to be a scam and didn't even install. What think ye?
    • Most of your questions are Firefox questions, not Ghostery-specific questions, so https://support.mozilla.org/ is a more appropriate place to be asking them.

Many of the things people "don't like" about recent releases (I'm referring to the browser, not Ghostery) can be dealt with by adjusting Firefox preferences. The Mozilla community can help you with this.

      See also:

You can convert tabs to bookmarks, and export and import bookmarks. (However, this isn't all of the state information.)

Depending on how far back you're trying to downgrade, you may need to create a new profile to get things working again.

Instructions can be found on the Mozilla support pages.

I'm morally and ethically required to advise you that if you want to use an unsupported version of Firefox, you do so at your own risk.

The supported versions are the current mainstream release,

and the current extended support release,

As of this writing, these are 21.0 and 17.0.6esr, respectively.

Any previous releases may have critical security vulnerabilities, and are not recommended.

Beta, Aurora, and Nightly channels are for developers and testers. If you're a typical consumer, leave these alone.

Older versions of the Flash Player are dangerous. If you use Flash, it's imperative that you keep it up to date. This can be a PITA, especially on Windows, where you may have up to three separate installations to worry about, and each of them is an accident waiting to happen. Recent Firefox releases have a plugins.click_to_play preference; setting it to true is a really good idea. Flash is not your friend.
