  • "Firefox newest" isn't specific enough. As of this writing, that could be either 3.6.27 or 10.0.2 — both are supported, both are up-to-date, but your question pertains to an aspect that differs between the two.

I'm guessing you have the former, and you've unintentionally disabled the Status Bar. Look in Firefox's View menu, and you should see an item to reactivate it.

Why do I think you're running 3.6.x? Because the lock symbol you referred to was removed in subsequent versions.

Do you have the Status Bar or Add-on Bar visible, but still no ghost icon? Check this setting in Ghostery's Advanced Options:

.Mr. Scott: Thanks for the answer. My level of confusion is extremely high, especially since I am using Win 7 Prof, and trying to learn it since Ive been off a computer for more than 2 years, and only used xp. The programmer at the tech bookstore I worked at for 24 years did not upgrade to the demonic vista. Even the power users who came into the bookstore hated it. Maybe that clickdown menu at the firefox name in the upper left corner in google/firefox is called view. I ultimately found the troubleshooting information item in the Help menu and found I had 9.0.1, and upgraded it to 10 something. BTW, i enabled my status(?) bar, it now has a Ghostery icon and the lock is labeled privacy watchdog.. The old hippie thanks you again, and I REALLY appreciate all you nice computer guys and girls for helping me.
