First, I think Ghostery is one of the finest Web utilities I have ever used. And, I have been using them since the very first public page went up. I run a number of programs to keep my computer clean of the various rodents that scoop up our information. They work great, stopping me before I go on some sites to tell me what is waiting for me when I click on the link.
This is where it gets tough. We want a free Web, though we do pay for some services, such as Linked-In, if one takes the premium mode, a few magazines, but for the most part we get almost anything we want for free - sort of. What many of these sites are asking us to do, is to share some of the aggregate information gathered, so that they can better determine the type of client who should pay to have an ad on the page. If the ad is totally off on it demographics, well, what will the Web site do? Hulu is going to a monthly fee for it cannot sell enough advertising dollars to make a profit or break even. We need them to make a profit, that allows them to offer even more for us.
So, we don't want these various "bugs" or whatever - and there are so many more than I ever expected - what can we offer them in the way of ideas to make money so they can keep the site free or keep it running? We can't just say we hate these thickenings, don't we owe some feedback for them which will give them the information they need, but let us, the user, control how much and what kind of information to give. I don't know, I don't have an answer, I just know that as bad as so many of these creepy pests that get all in our browser and beyond, gives something that the advertiser is looking for. I am just looking for solutions and not only attacking them. We all need to win to keep the great Web that we have. Ideas?
The table can't be square, for to make it all work, the table must be round.

Thank you for using Ghostery and the insightful commentary Rocklobster. Ghostery remains a tool first and foremost to provide consumers control of how your information is used. With Ghostery, you have the tools to control whom you provide access to your data which is why we allow both all inclusive and selective blocking. Advertising is by nature not a negative entity and when done with respect to consumer privacy, as you've eloquently noted, supports the Web in keeping content free. It's a challenging proposition to say the least, and our goal at Ghostery is to provide you as many tools as possible to make the best informed decision about what to block, and what to allow.
