Very high CPU usage and memory utilization with Ghostery 5.0.1 for Firefox.

Hi everyone, looks like there may be a conflict with new Ghostery and ABP. 5.0.1 is meant to go out for a limited number of users, so if you've received an update, please downgrade on this page: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...
while we determine the issue and fix it. Thanks everyone.

    Beginning some time between Friday (Aug 9th 2013) and today (August 13th 2013), my Firefox started using 100% CPU at all times (even with only google.com open), and my memory usage is through the roof.

    It only happens with both Ghostery and Adblock Plus enabled. Disabling either one fixes the issue. I have not changed any Ghostery or Adblock Plus settings during that time.

    Ghostery 5.0.1, Adblock Plus 2.3.2, Firefox 22.0 (updated to 23.0, no change)

    Hi, I'm here because Ghostery started running my cpu at 30%+ in firefox today. I stepped away from my machine for a bit, and when I came back, Ghostery had opened the wizard in a new tab and my machine was super hot. When I disabled it, it cooled back down. I'm using firefox on ubuntu 13.04 -- machine is a Lenovo Ideapad u400.

    adblock plus
    better privacy
    imgur uploader
    no script
    tamper data
    WOT

    I updated to Ghostery 5.0.1. It started eating memory immediately. I disabled it and the memory leak is gone. I run a Mac 10.6.8 FF 23.0 Other extensions AddBlock Plus, Check compatibility, Email This, File Title, LiveClick, Memory Restart, Open With, PDF Viewer, Open With, Profile Switcher, RSS Icon, Session Manager, Surfon, TabMix Plus, Unload Tab, Url Fixer Xmarx, LiveJournal Addons.

    I am keeping Ghostery disabled due to the severe Memory Leak. I hope you can fix this.

    If I disable Ghostery then Cpu is < 1%
    This is on Windows 7.

    Firefox auto-updated Ghostery from what I think was 5.0.0 to 5.0.1. Immediately, Activity Monitor (I'm on a Mac) showed Firefox CPU usage over 100% (aside: huh?) and my fans responded in turn making for a loud computer. I disabled Ghostery and reopened Firefox and all was well. Re-enabling Ghostery brought the high CPU usage back.

    I uninstalled Ghostery, re-opened Firefox, and installed Ghostery from the website so now I'm running 2.9.6 (huh?) and turned off auto updating of addons in Firefox and am hesitant to update Ghostery. Nonetheless, my workaround worked but it seems like there's still a problem in the new version.

    Oh, look, Firefox wants me to update to version 23.

    I just upgraded to Ghostery 5.0.1, and now Firefox is unresponsive. It's at a constant 100% CPU usage, and it slowly eats RAM even when the app isn't being used. I opened Firefox with no tabs and did nothing, and after a few minutes it was at 2.5GB of active RAM usage. Disabling Ghostery immediately fixed the problem.

    I'm using a Mac with OS 10.7.5 and Firefox 23.0.

    Ghostery just auto-updated to version 5.01 and I'm seeing a ***SERIOUS*** memory leak on Firefox 22.0 (and now also on Firefox 23.0, I can confirm -- just ran the update).

    I'm on Mac OS X 10.8.4.

    Within minutes of opening Firefox with just a few tabs open, Firefox is using 1.6 GB of RAM and constantly growing.

    I'm about 90% sure that it's Ghostery, because it's the only add-on that updated today, and the problem started immediately afterward.

    (Firefox RAM usage up to 1.9 GB now, just a minute or two later.)

    It seems Ghostery 5.0.1 is available now on the website. I installed it for FF23 on Linux (openSuse 12.3). FF was constantly running at about 100% CPU. This isn't it yet.
    Reverted to Ghostery 2.9.6, and everything is back to normal.

    I just updated to the latest version of Ghostery 5.0.1. and it caused my CPU usage for firefox to go to, and stay at, 100% even after multiple restarts. When I disabled Ghostery it went back to under 10% usage. I'm using Firefox 23 on Mountain Lion

    Ghostery 5.0.1 for Firefox is causing Firefox to run at 50% of processor when no page is being displayed.


    After upgrading the Ghostery plugin to 5.0.1, I noticed that Firefox was using 50% of my processor with no page being displayed. I disabled the Ghostery plugin and restarted Firefox. The processor utilization returned to normal. I removed Ghostry 5.0.1 and reinstalled Ghostery 2.9.6. The processor usage is still normal.

    Ghostery 5.01 & Firefox 23 using too much CPU & Memory.


    Had to turn off the latest Ghostery. Firefox (Ver 23) was using 25-27% CPU, and gobbling up memory (over 2.5g). I isolated the CPU usage to the latest Ghostery (5.01). I have a fast computer, Win7 Home Premium, SP1, SSHD, 8Gig Ram, 3.ghz AMD Phenom II 960. Not doing anything else at the time. With it off, Firefox CPU usage is back to 0-1%. I've also been experiencing a high number of Firefox crashes; may be related.

    Last time ghostery updated I noticed my browser being really slow, Task manager shows it at a constant 25% CPU usage (full core)
    Disabling Ghostery and restarting browser and it is back to normal.
    Cannot use ghostery until this is fixed.

  • My Firefox crashed twice today. This hasn't happened in months.
    The last time I tried to figure out which add-on might be causing it and found out it was Ghostery. It constantly grabs 25% CPU on my Quadcore and eats up more and more RAM until my browser crashes.

    Right now, it is completely unusable and even slows down typing this report.

    After installing the August, 2013, Windows 7 64 bit updates, Firefox 23.0 w/ Ghostery enabled increases CPU usage from about 2% to about 30%. No other add in does this. I assume some bug in Ghostery and/or the Win 7 updates aren't working together very well. Ghostery is v 5.0.1.

    Will downgrade Ghostery to 2.9.6 which is suggested as the "latest" version on the Ghostery old version page suggested in Ghostery's support link.

    I'm still experiencing Firefox (23.0, Win 7) crashing upon startup even when I updated Ghostery to its latest release. But ver. 2.9.6 works perfectly fine. I don't know what's causing it though so I'm disabling Ghostery for the time being until someone find a solution concerning this encounter I experience.

    Windows 7 home premium, Mozilla Firefox 22.0, Ghostery 5.0.1, going to Scottrade.com website. Get a listing of my stocks, click on one of the stock symbols to get details (charts, etc) and ghostery blinks 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 for about a minute. Even if I disable Ghostery, it still does this. It makes the program difficult to use.

    Ghostery works fine on my MacBook Pro, but not on my Windows 7 laptop. And it works okay on other sites. Can you find someone you know with a Scottrade brokerage account and try Ghostery. I wish I had more information, but not sure where it is.

    This fixes the ABP and other content blocker conflicts with Ghostery, so if you're interested in testing 5.0 release, please upgrade. We'll notify you when the final 5.0 is going to be out here as well.

    Note: a browser restart may be needed after the installation.

    Ghostery's latest update coincides with Mozilla Firefox freezing and crashing with great frequency on a Mac OS X, version 10.6.8.


    The latest update to Ghostery is the only change since this began to occur. Web pages are much slower to load and switching to another tab often causes Firefox to become unresponsive.

    After I installed ghostery Firefox began using 106% of the CPU, (macbook pro 2011, running OSX Snow Leopard) the fan runs constantly, and everything else is slowed. The only other add-ons I have are Adblock Plus and Iconify, and both are current. When I disable ghostery all is normal. Any ideas?
