I'm blocking Web Bugs as I find them (no I don't read all the descriptions, tried and I don't understand what they mean anyway). This causes many retail sites not to work. Crate and Barrel will not go to "checkout." Home Depot will not refine searches or change sort order. Apparently if you close that website's page, reopen it, turn OFF web bug blocking, and start over from the beginning, sites will work.
Can Ghostery have separate categories for Bugs that are just snooping and those that are necessary to do what users want to do online?

1Crate and Barrel's checkout appears to be working for me, although I was able to reproduce your problems with Home Depot. Which browser are you using?
You shouldn't need to turn off web blocking entirely; it's usually just one or two things that make a difference. Both merchants look like they've monkeyed with Omniture (grumble, grumble).
If you know of other sites with similar issues, please share. There's a bigger picture here — it's just hard to see when you only have a few pieces of the puzzle to work with.

I'm using Firefox 3.6.12 on Mac OS x 10.7.2.
I now suspect that some of my choices in "Performance Options" caused problems too. I dont know what those things mean, so had just checked them all. Pitiful.
Some sites, especially GMail, seem to be much slower with Ghostery too.
I'll try allowing Omniture and see if that helps, and will post on further problems. Thanks so much Eric! -

Firefox 3.6.24 is available now. I recommend upgrading:
I use Gmail on a regular basis, with all of the Performance Options checked, and don't have any problems. The only setting that sometimes slows things down for me is "Scan for dynamically inserted page elements," and that mostly affects pages that embed Google Maps with a lot of placemarks.

Oh wow, I didn't realize I had turned off automatic updates. THANKS!!

Hi Sarah,
Unfortunately, there is a lot of overlap between bugs that just snoop and those that are necessary to do what users want to do online.
For example, Omniture doesn't do anything useful but is often tightly integrated into site functionality, so that blocking Omniture breaks the associated part of the site.
You can help Ghostery by providing examples of broken pages.- view 1 more comment

The quickest way to troubleshoot a page problem with Ghostery is to first see if Ghostery blocked anything on the page. If Ghostery reports it did, try telling Ghostery to not block on this specific page. If the problem is fixed after reloading, you know it happened because of one of the bugs Ghostery blocked.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, how do I know whether Ghostery blocked anything? I know how to tell if a Web Bug is active or blocked on the page, but not how to tell whether it blocked anything. Or are you simply saying that I should try turning off Web Bug Blocking altogether on that page. I'm sorry I don't know more!!

Hi Sarah, sorry for the delay in responding.
Here is a screenshot that shows Ghostery for Firefox's findings for this page. I told Ghostery to block Twitter Button and reloaded the page.
In the screenshot, Ghostery tells us that it blocked Twitter Button, but not New Relic or Facebook Social Plugins. -
