How about crowd-sourcing venues?

It strikes me that users of the plugin could help each other by essentially crowd-sourcing the venues. Rather than everyone inputting all the venues themselves, they can do an AJAX search against a centralised server. Whenever someone adds a new venue (that isn't at the central server), it automatically gets sent and added.

A cool idea Gary, once which has crossed my mind, but the intricacies of it make me a little nauseous. Really, this would need to be heavily moderated and QA'd, and would need a dedicated server to back it up. Perhaps more than a free plugin can offer.

But a cool idea nonetheless!

I'd imagine the server isn't going to be too big of an issue. The list would have fairly compressible properties (it's essentially a tree of country-metro-venue nodes), could be downloaded periodically and/or could be synced locally on change.

Moderating and QA'ing it would potentially be a pain, as you say so...

Slightly different idea to the same end: use the Upcoming.org API for venue search. It would probably have to be an optional feature, as end-users would need an API key and that's the sort of thing most users don't go for at all. There are a few other methods but this is the pertinent one:

Thanks Gary, will look into the Upcoming API when I have time, that seems more doable.
