Slow initial connection (Using SSH Tunnel)

Hi impathic!

Great app, I really like it. I've set up a connection to my MySQL server via the SSH Tunnel, but I've noticed that it generally takes about 60 seconds to initiate the connection. What is it that is happening in all this time? From a desktop client such as Sequel Pro it takes about 2 seconds at the maximum.

60 seconds is a long time. What kind of device is it? The SSH process is somewhat intensive, so older devices (e.g., 1st generation iPod Touches) might be slow. But SSH on recent apps is a lot faster.

One guess might be that your server is configured to attempt to do a reverse-name lookup on your address when you try to connect, and failing because it doesn't know your IP address. I vaguely recall seeing that behavior in the past somewhere. One way you can test this is to download another iPhone SSH client (iSSH is nice, but it isn't free) and try to use that to SSH directly into your server. If it also takes a long time, then it is probably a configuration issue on the server that some fiddling around by your or your system administrator can resolve.

  • I'm having exactly this issue as well, except for me the delay is somewhere just over 30 seconds.

This is on an iPad 3, so processor speed shouldn't be an issue.

It's a problem on two different servers, both of which I can ssh into using other apps (Prompt, Diet Coda, Textastic, etc) pretty much instantly.

Looking at the server logs it looks like the delay is happening after key exchange, but before user authentication, so I'd guess the transport layer is up and running fine, but something just before user auth is taking a long time in your app.

Hope you can get it sorted; this is making the app extremely painful to use.
