SQL Server - Lags 2 minutes then says "Invalid Argument"

All My settings are correct on the Server to allow TCP/IP

The server name is a named instance.

The port is the standard 1433

Both the PC and the Ipad are connected on the same network

This is so annoying, I spend less time setting up remote access between 2 real PCs across the web than on this app!

Im using:

Database Host : IP address of PC where SQL server is running
Also
Database Host : Server\IP address
Also
Database Host : Named instance
Also
Database Host : IP address\Named Instance

User Name : SQL Server login Ive set up
Password : Sql Server Login password for above

Database Name : Blank
Also
Database Name : Name of one of the databases

Database port : blank
Also
Database port : 1433

Description : The default description that the app filled in
Also
Description : Blank

Named Instance : Blank
Also
Named Instance : the name of the instance
Also
Named Instance : The Server\the name of the instance

Nothing works, It just spits out the Invalid argument error amongst other things.

The 2 minute lag makes it sound suspiciously like there is a firewall somewhere in between blocking access to the port. Have you been able to access the SQL Server instance from a separate machine on your network before?

  • Hi, The above issue was trying to connect to 1 sql server via LAN and was giving the timeout. I then tried connecting to a different SQL server over the web and it worked fine all last night.

This morning Ive opened the app and the same server with the exact same settings is giving the error "Login request timed out". No firewalls have changed since it worked yesterday.

Im connecting using a 3 wireless modem, are there known issues with these? Everything else works fine through it, including connecting my laptop to the sql server over the web via SSMS.

  • Its now working, I had to type a database name into the relevant text box. I must say that although very useful functionality wise, this piece of kit is very poorly designed. Its like the end user wasnt even thought about.

Its clunky, inconsistent and difficult to use. If it wasnt the only app on the market that does this sort of thing Id have thrown it out 20 mins into the epic fail that was the first day using it.

I am very muich looking forward to the next update - I assume youve got one planned to make the thing more user friendly?

I'm glad you got it to work. The timeout due to the lack of database name is surprising; usually the fail would happen immediately, and with a more descriptive error message. I know it is possible to set up a server-side filter to cause a timeout when the database name is missing or wrong (presumably to prevent people from randomly trying to guess your DB name), but I don't know if that is the case in your setup.

Anyhow, we are very interested in hearing constructive feedback from our users. Are you having issues with any of the other features aside from the initial connection dialog? Any suggestions for improvement you may have would be very welcome, either posted on this forum or mailed to support@impathic.com.

Alternatively, if you find that the app doesn't satisfy your needs, you can get a refund by filling out the form at http://www.apple.com/emea/support/itu...

  • Thanks,

Ill send a mail shortly with things to improve the useability of the app. I dont think a refund is needed as it actually does work now. :)
