ok, I re-cleared these transactions with a new import and deleted the previous transactions, and things are fine now. However this can be tricky as this issue can lead to clear a transaction twice. Still do'nt know why it happened ><

Hi Lionel,

Sorry for the troubles on the import screen! How long have you been importing, and when did you first notice this issue?

When you import, the QFX/OFX file you download from your bank assigns each transaction a unique number called a "FITID." Goodbudget uses the FITID to identify and mark each transaction so you don't import the same one more than once. However, sometimes the way bank's come up with these FITIDs changes, causing this kind of problem.

If that's the case, then going forward you should not encounter this problem again, so long as the new process for generating FITIDs remains consistent.

But, if you're finding you're still having this issue, we can confirm whether or not it's a FITID issue by looking at two of your OFX files that cover different date ranges with a bit of overlap -- so we can compare a single transactions across two files.

Hope that helps!

Hi Karisa,

Thanks for the reply. I had the issue yesterday on another transaction, and the FITID from my 2 .ofx files were indeed different:

<FITID>201900300038BD27
<FITID>03217       BD2B

There is another number for each transaction in the ofx file, called "CHECKNUM". Though this issue comes from this file, wouldn't it be interesting that Goodbudget checks both of these numbers, and shows a warning if one is different (with the possibility to remove the potential duplicate directly from the import screen) ?

Hi Lionel,

Thanks for posting! I think I'm misunderstanding what you're suggesting. Here's what I think you mean. Your OFX files have a number called a "CHECKNUM", and you'd like for Goodbudget to check the CHECKNUM against your FITID and warn you when they're different. Is that right?

If I got that right, I'm not sure I understand how that would prevent against duplicate entries. I think the issue is that the FITIDs across multiple files are different making it difficult for Goodbudget to track a single transaction across those files.

Let me know where I got this wrong.

But, since you are having issues with FITIDs changing, you can try importing going forward with CSV files, if your bank provides those. Those file types don't have FITIDs, and so Goodbudget generates them using each transactions name, date and amount.

If you do try using CSV files, you will see duplicates for the first time. But you can try to minimize that by filtering your CSV file for a date range you haven't imported for before.

I hope that helps!

Hi Karisa,

Still having the issue with OFX. I'll try csv though it is a bit less friendly. Here's what a transaction looks like in the ofx file:

What I am suggesting is that goodbudget checks both FITID and CHECKNUM instead of FITID only (CHECKNUM seems to be unique for each transaction too). Another thing: if goodbudget creates its own transaction ID for csv files, couldn't it do the same with ofx ?

Hi Lionel,

Thanks for clarifying! None of my banks provide OFX files, but the QFX files don't include a CHECKNUM line. I'm not sure if that's standard across all banks though. For now, I've added your request to of checking both CHECKNUM (where applicable) and FITID to our request tracker for future consideration.

I'm sure it's possible to have Goodbudget generate FITIDs for all files. If I'm not mistaken, banks are supposed to create unique FITIDs that don't change across files, so we've designed GB to read the FITIDs that are given.

Thanks again!
