Budgeting based on available balance

Hi, new user and can’t seem to figure out how to use this system so didn’t use with my last pay check- getting paid again on Friday and really need help. Here is the issue- say I get paid $1500 every 2 weeks . I set up budget based on bills/payment through the month. One bill might fall in the 1st and another on the 21st yet this system gives the appearance I have funds in those envelopes to use that isn’t there! Yes I unallocated. I can SEE the money budgeted in these envelopes and have no idea what is REALLY available. I deleted my All activity twice but what I “budgeted” in each envelope is still there! I’d there away to fund based on pay and bill DATES? Using envelopes to me means - this is WHAT I have to spend at that time- but this system shows budget money even if bill won’t be paid until next check. Sorry if this is confusing- all I need is to know with EACH check what is available to use and NOT to see envelopes FUNDED with money I really don’t have available at that time ( I selected unallocated) My mind is spinning- and suspect yours is too based on my post-,welcome to my world

Hi Shelly,

It sounds like you'd like to see a view of your Envelopes that shows available money and not only the money you've budgeted to them. However, in Goodbudget, you should actually be able to see two numbers for every Envelope, a current balance (in other words, the available balance you're looking for), as well as the budgeted amount. When you look at your list of Envelopes on the home screen, the top number on the listing for each Envelope tells you your current / available balance, and the bottom number shows the budgeted amount.

Once you've added your Income / funds to Unallocated, like it sounds like you've successfully done, you can use an Envelope Fill to move that money into your Envelopes to provide you with your actually available money for budgeting.

Hope this helps!

Thanks- I still must be doing something wrong. I “ filled” envelopes today from unallocated funds until balance was zero - since all were “ filled” yet the final “save” stayed grayed out so I could not save the plan - therefore back to nothing budgeted. Very frustrating. Maybe I should just do it the old fashioned way and use cash for everything. I am pretty techie and love apps but THIS app is sooooooo confusing- this is 2 pay checks in over 4 weeks have been unable to budget using this system/app.

Hi Shelly,

It sounds like you may be Filling your Envelopes on our iPhone app, and unable to Save the Fill you've created because there's some necessary piece missing. The most common case is a name -- you won't be able to save your Fill unless you give it a name. If that's not the case, can you send us a screenshot of the greyed-out screen to support@goodbudget.com so we can take a closer look?

Hi Shelly
I’ll explain what I do. When my husband gets paid biweekly, I place it in unallocated to be used next month. The 1st of every month I use the money from the unallocated to fill my envelopes. I have utility bills, property taxes, insurances due throughout the month that automatically come out of the bank. I post all transactions ahead of time for all bills so the balance up on top shows a better indication of how much money I have left for the rest of the month.

Hi Kamile , thanks for trying to help. I’m doing something wrong and can’t seem to figure out what. I can’t even set up my envelopes- I add money but final save is grayed out and only option is cancel. Very frustrated.
