Changing my budget

I want to change my budget quite a bit. Some envelopes would remain but several would be gone. Can I delete these or what should I do? I don't want to destroy historical data.

I also have some messed up envelopes. I think I did not handle them properly. For example I owed a tax debt so I made a goal envelope with the total amount as the goal. I put money into it but then each month I pay out of it to the tax man so the total is 0 at the end of the month so I will never hit my goal. How should I have handled this?

Hi Abbey,

These are good questions! You can make changes to your budget as needed. When you delete an Envelope, the transactions associated with the Envelope will remain in your Household so you can refer to them later on. However, since those transactions will be unassigned from an Envelope, they won't be counted in your spending reports going forward.

I think the way you handled your tax with a Goal Envelope is fine. Goal Envelopes count whether or not you've hit your bar by counting what you've saved so far over time, not whether your balance was totally full at some point. Hope that made sense! Essentially Goals Envelopes are built to allow you to spend from the Envelope as you save, which sounds like is what you did.

Hope that helps!
