Delete One Time Envelopes - Consequence?

Hi everyone.  I searched for this question and didn't see a clear explanation, so I figured I'd try this way.  What happens to transactions after I delete an envelope?

Here's my scenario.  I created a single goal envelope for "Feb vacation", whereby we visited San Francisco last week (should've stopped by to say hi to the great GB folks!).  I deducted expenses as we went.  By the way, a success story is that we managed to go through the entire vacation under budget, without credit, and via all cash, made careful decisions, and still did everything we wanted to do.  So now the vacation is over.  I had $79 left in there, and I moved it into a debt reduction envelope, as that's how I wanted to use the excess vacation funds.  Now, what to do with this envelope.  I want to remove it, but I'm afraid what will happen to all the transactions from that envelope.  I don't want to screw up anything, but over time, if I can't remove these old envelopes, I'll have a huge list of envelopes for prior one-time usages that I can't get rid of.  Bottom line is I'm looking to preserve the history without building up the envelopes over time.  For instance, a year from now, I'd like to go back and see what I spent on vacation.

Another idea I thought of is to leave it until I have another one-time goal to meet, then rename it.

Thoughts?

I've recently had the same question and I was not able to find an answer.  Hopefully someone can provide one.

One idea I have is to keep your envelopes more generic.  Instead of a "Feb vacation" envelope, you could create a "Vacation" or "Family Vacation" envelope that can be reused for the same purpose over and over again.  I have just such an envelope in my budget as well and I always put a little something in there.  My goal amount and due date change periodically, so the amount I save changes from time to time.  I have similar envelopes for appliance replacement/repair, car replacement, and furniture replacement.

Hi impaler and Wayne,

Thank you both for posting! Currently, when you delete an Envelope, the transactions housed in that deleted Envelope remain in your GB Household, so you can refer back to the transactions as needed.

But, after the Envelope is deleted, those transactions will no longer be assigned to an Envelope so that spending will not appear in your spending reports. Hope that makes sense!

We are currently working on the delete Envelope functionality, so that your spending continues to show up in your reports even after you delete the Envelope.

All to say, if you can, wait to delete your 'Feb Vacation' Envelope until after that enhancement is implemented. I can't give you an exact ETA, but it should be soon. (I'm also waiting for that fix, so I can delete my 'Debt' Envelope that I no longer need!)

Wayne, I do like your idea of keeping your Envelope names generic, so that you can re-use the Envelope. That does work well for things like Vacation or Christmas gifts, because those are things that typically come every year.

Thanks again!

Thanks, Karisa.  That is very good news.  Could I request that you consider adding a "Hidden" attribute to envelopes as well?  This would allow users to remove envelopes in the interest of keeping their list clutter free, but be able to restore later on when desired.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to update you all and let you know that spending from deleted Envelopes and Accounts will now show up in your reports.

You'll also be able to filter for transactions that are associated with the deleted Envelope and Accounts by using the Advanced search on the web, and then using the 'Envelope' or 'Account' drop down to find your 'Deleted' item at the bottom.

Enjoy deleting some old Envelopes :D

Be interesting to see how this thread goes. My major and I do mean major gripe with GB is the inability to - archive envelopes, collapse envelope groups (and have them remain collapsed )and the ability to hide envelopes. Any of these would help re impalers scenario but unfortunately this is not on GBs road map or words to that effect. I really think it should be.

Karisa's response to the problem was not included in this thread.  What exactly is Colin so thankful for and what are his continuing concerns?

Today, when I went here to read the comments, this time, just like before, Karisa's long post does not show up.  This must be a minor glitch in the "Get Satisfaction" system.

Hi John,

Thanks for letting us know! That is weird, and hopefully an isolated issue. I have posted on GetSat's GetSat page (hehe) to see if others have had similar reports. I'll reply back if I learn anything useful.

Thanks John!

Hi John,

I just experienced what you were saying. Well, sort of...

When there are too many comments replying to a single comment, GetSat will collapse them, and you have to click on the 'View previous...' button to see them again. But, it's super easy to miss!

Here's a screen so you can see:

Is that what was happening for you?

That is exactly what it was.  I didn't notice that sections were collapsed and the "see previous" at the top of each collapsed section of posts isn't very noticeable where it is.  There were actually two of those that collapsed two sets of the posts this time.  Not just one, but 2 different ones that buried quite a few posts, each!

I'll watch really closely for that tiny note everywhere in the posts I read from now on.

Thanks so much, Karisa. :-)

You're welcome! I'm glad it's not a GetSat bug, but rather just a something we missed. I will let the GetSat team know that the link is really easy to miss, though. Perhaps a bolder color would stand out more? Thanks!

Impaler, I learned today (chugging around GB's site) that you can tag spending using a hashtag (#). It might take a bit of time but you could tag those transactions (for example) #febvacation and then see them in their own report later down the road. Maybe Karisa can chime in on whether those tags remain and can be used to generate reports once an envelope is deleted?

Hi Bixie23,

Thanks for asking! Transactions associated with deleted Envelopes will still be returned when using the 'advanced' search link on the website. Just click on 'advanced' and then select the correct tag from the Tag drop down list at the bottom.

However, the Spending by Envelope report will not return transactions associated with a deleted Envelope, even when you use the tag drop down to filter for that specific tag there. Hope that made sense!

Hi Bixie23 - We just wanted to update you and let you know that we've released a fix for the web app so that spending from deleted Envelopes will now show up in your spending reports when you search for tags. Hope that helps!
