Deleting Unallocated Funds

hello,

I just started up EEBA, looks great, but I have one question: I was playing around with my envelopes and changing the amounts and now the envelopes I decided to delete or decrease the budgets of have sent the money to Unallocated. Is there a way to delete this or do I just have to use it up over the next few refills?

Hi lynzee,

If you were just testing things out before and would like to start fresh on a "real" budget, you might want to clear all the data in your EEBA household. You can do this via the "My Account" link at the top right of the screen, and clicking on "Clear all my data."

Otherwise, yes, you could distribute the Unallocated Money to your Envelopes and use it up over the next few refills.

Hope that helps! Let me know if this doesn't answer your question.

Is there anyway to use the app before "unallocated" was available? Are the developers open to the option of not having the "unallocated" envelope available? It just confuses me and my husband.

EEBA uses Unallocated money as a way to move money between incomes, envelopes, and accounts. And it is now more transparent for Android users. We offer Unallocated Money to help people with different kinds of budgets such as households with multiple incomes, an unsteady income, or a pay period that's different from a budget period.

I'm sorry we don't make the previous version available for download. As we continue to develop the app, it would be harder to address issues that arise in older versions of EEBA.

Do you mind sharing some of the confusion that you are finding? What do you expect and what are you seeing as you work with Unallocated money? And if have any household-specific questions about Unallocated money, write to us at support@eebacanhelp.com with your household username. We'd love to take a look!

We are probably (actually, most likely) not using the app the way it was intended or to its fullest potential, but in a way that makes sense for us. We basically have envelopes that "mirror" bank accounts we have, so that we can keep track of our purchases and deposits in real time, rather than wait for the bank to release held funds or pending transactions. We also have envelopes to separate our bank accounts, so we can keep track of what money is budgeted for what. This way we're also able to "budget out" funds that we will pay later (e.g., a bill for $150 that's due in a week and automatically withdrawn but we want to "pay" for now).

For example, our envelopes are "Primary Checking," "Secondary Checking," "Other Checking," "Savings," and "Tax Money." Though our tax refund is in our primary checking account, for example, we keep this money separate from the "Primary Checking" envelope so we can allocate expenses where we would like. We use the "Record Expense" function for everything to show purchases or deposits into each account as it's been working for us since we downloaded the app. We use each account or envelope for different types of expenses, so it works for us to be able to use the app and see how much money we have available in our different accounts for different expenses.

The "Unallocated" envelope isn't so much bothering the way we do things, but sometimes funds just magically appear in the envelope for no reason, and it's more of an eyesore than anything. We don't want to go to a previous version of the app, but were instead wondering if the developers would be open to adding an option in the Settings for us to hide or not use the Unallocated envelope.

Like I said, it's more of an aesthetic thing than anything else for us, but I figured it didn't hurt to ask. :)

Hi tracietee,

That sounds like an interesting system! I'm glad you've found something that works well for you. As Audrey noted, we don't have the previous version available, but if you don't use Unallocated Money it shouldn't bother you.

I'm curious why funds are appearing there magically. If you press on the Unallocated Money row on the Envelopes tab you should see the transaction history for your Unallocated Money. That should help you figure out what's going on. Your Unallocated Money should only change:

1. If you record an income and choose "Keep Unallocated."
2. You Distribute Funds From Unallocated Money
3. You delete an Envelope, which will move the funds from that Envelope to Unallocated Money.

Other than that, it should stay out of your way if you don't use it.

Hope that helps!

I'm just as confused as you concerning why money appeared in there. When my husband updated the app, he saw that there was $30.10 in the unallocated envelope, and he was hoping EEBA was paying us for our continued loyalty. ;)

I tried to find out where it originated, but our other envelopes were reconciling perfectly with our bank records, so we're not sure where it came from. There wasn't any transaction history in the envelope either, so it looks as if it just willed itself into existence. :)

Thanks for your guys' help and quick responses. Hopefully it won't give us anymore issues, and maybe I'll even set some time aside to learn how to use the app properly. :)

Each month I add our budgeted amounts individually to each envelope (clothing, gas, spending, etc.) Our spending amount fluctuates as some months we set mor emoney aside in a special envelope if we have a big event coming up. Therefore, we dont have a standard budgeted amount in spending each month and we sometimes add/delete envelopes if we have a vacation coming up or a wedding that we want to set some spending money aside for. This is obviously not OK with the unallocated envelope. It always shows a negative number. As someone else mentioned, we know from our bank accounts we are doing things the way we should be but unallocated is bothersome for us. Having a way to turn off this function or delete the envelope would be great. I can't distribute form it because its -4,000! I'm glad the functionality is there for folks who use it but for those who don't it is quite bothersome and confusing.

Hi aisling.pheasey,

From what I can tell, a main source of error in your Unallocated Money is coming from the deletion of Envelopes. When you delete an Envelope that has a positive or negative balance in it, the surplus or deficit will transfer to your Unallocated Money.

EEBA uses unallocated money in all versions and across all platforms, so I'm sorry there is no way to turn off the unallocated money. Are you using Accounts? If not, you can Add Money into your Unallocated in order to get rid of the deficit you see.

You can also email us at support@eebacanhelp.com with your household username. We can take a closer look at how you're budgeting and offer any help in how to best interact with Unallocated Money. Thanks!

Hi, Just gone through the same puzzle as the comments posted previously.

This is the work around I used to "zero" the Unallocated Money (note I did this on web page not the app):

1. Create a temporary envelope.
2. Using "Distribute from Unallocated" menu option, distribute the entire unallocated amount to the temporary envelope.
3. Under Transactions, select "Record Expense". Use any meaningful name for "who recieved payment", enter the full unallocated amount for "how much was paid". Next select the temporary envelop you distributed the unallocated funds to, and hit the "record transaction button. This will empty the envelope.
4. Go back to Envelopes > Edit budgets and delete temporary envelope.

This workaround may mess up reporting, if you are using it, as the transaction is still recorded. I did try deleting the transaction but this only put the money back as unallocated again. I guess the unallocated funds is one of those "special" features we will just have to live with, for what is otherwise an excellent product.

Hi Phillip,

Thanks for sharing. If you end up with an unwanted Unallocated balance in the future, just send us an e-mail and let us help. That money always comes from a previous income, so editing that past income will also clear out your Unallocated without any gymnastics.

We had money in Unallocated (I don't even remember if it was a positive or negative amount) so I went in and deleted the only transaction listed to try to get rid of it. Now all of our envelopes are messed up! Is there any way to undo what I've done? Thanks!

Hi Darcy,

Sorry for the troubles with Unallocated! Unfortunately, there's not an undo option in Goodbudget. However, I think you deleted an Envelope Fill. You can try making a new one to add money back to your Envelopes again. See how to create a Envelope Fill here.

Thanks
