Editing payee names

I would like a way to edit the payee names list accessed via the web page. If I enter Wal-Mart and Walmart, EEBA thinks they are separate businesses and keeps both in my payee names list. On the phone apps the payee names tend to be focused on what is only being used on a transaction. So if I change the only Wal-Mart transaction to Walmart then Wal-Mart goes away from my phone payee list, but on the web page it still shows up even though there are no longer transactions with that name. Thanks

Hi John,

Thanks for the suggestion! You're right that the auto-fill suggestions should reflect your existing transactions. I'll put this into our feature tracker.

Is there a way to edit the prefill options that come up on my android device? Incorrectly entered variations of "Walmart" (for example) on my phone were manually corrected, but still appear in the list when I begin to type.

Hi stacie.longtin,

The auto-fill suggestions come from your existing transactions, so editing your transactions should change the suggestions you see. If you're still seeing other variations of "Walmart," are you sure there are no transactions that still have the old variation?

If you're still having problems, send us an e-mail at support@eebacanhelp.com with your household name so we can take a look at what's going on.

OMG; my EXACT example. Kinda funny, Steve. You posted 2 years ago that this functionality does not exist. What - did you remove it?

Hi Mike,

This functionality still exists! Goodbudget should suggest Payees based on your current transactions.

If you have two versions of the same Payee, you can edit the misspelled one by editing the transaction itself. Once you've done that, the misspelled Payee should no longer be suggested to you.

Hope that helps!

Hi, how are we able to edit the payee names? I have two versions of "Walmart" and would really like to get rid of one..

Hi adubs1092,

Good question! You can edit Payee names by opening up the transaction, and manually editing the Payee name.

If you see two versions of Walmart, try editing any transaction that has the incorrect spelling, so that the Payee is consistent across all of your transactions. Then, you should only see the correct spelling going forward.

Thanks!

Hi thanks!

How can you remove the incorrect spelling so it is not an option an longer? Again, the Walmart example brings up two Walmarts, "Wal-mart" and "Walmart". I'd like just one option to be be presented.

Hi there,

For that, you'll have to edit the transactions that have the Payee name that you don't want to make them match the Payee you do want.

For example, say you want the Payee to be 'Walmart'. You'll need to find all of the transactions with the spelling 'Wal-Mart', and edit the transaction Payee name to change it to 'Walmart'.

Once you do that, you may need to log out / back in to Goodbudget on your phone to clear out the local data. But, after that, you shouldn't see the undesired spelling suggested going forward.

Did that make sense?

That makes sense. What if we have 100 transactions that have used the wrong spelling? And 200 that have used the correct spelling? Is there a way to correct the wrong spellings on a mass scale?

Good question. Right now, there's not a way to bulk edit them all at once. You'll have to edit them individually.

You might find it easier to do so on the web. That way, you can use the advanced search bar to search for the incorrectly spelled transactions, so they're all in one place.

Hope this helps!

Can a bulk "Find and Replace" feature be added to GoodBudget for Payee names? It would be any easy fix to take the 100 entries of "Wal-Mart" and replace with "Walmart"

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the suggestion! I understand how that would be helpful and time saving. I've added your request for a Find and Replace feature to our features tracker for future consideration.

Thanks!

Hey there - has the feature been released? Once a new user gets into budgeting, we all put in categories for spending as Payees, but then realize (after we read more money books) that behavior based tracking is better. (Read "Your Money or Your Life" by Vicki Rubin & Joe Dominguez if you have not!)

Thus we need to go in and edit all of our prior Payees to be new categories. Other people have had the same issue as this.

Is there a way to edit the single instance of a Payee (say "Casual Dinner" and then change it to be "Restaurants: Just Us" and then have it update across ALL transactions?

Thank you!

Hi Louis,

Thanks for posting! It is possible to bulk edit Payee names while on the website, so that you only have to type the new Payee name once.

Here's how to do that using your example. First, head to the website and search for 'Casual Dinner' in the Search bar at the top. Then, select the checkbox under the 'Type' column of all the transactions you'd like to edit. Next, click on 'Change Name,' enter the correct Payee name or spelling and save your changes when you're done.

Hope that helps

Is there a way to stop the generic payee suggestions? I live in Australia so American business suggestions like Walmart are not useful to me.

Hi Emz,

You can clear your default Payee list! If you're on iPhone, you'll do that by tapping on More > Clear Default Payees.

On Android, tap on the Overflow Menu > Settings > Clear Default Payees.

Hope that helps!
