The app works a bit like a notepad, it's not connected to your bank accounts, it's just where you keep track of your spending.

When you,  say, buy $25 on groceries, click on your grocery envelope and fill out the details of the expense. When you return to your main view, your budget for groceries will be less $25.

Yes, you have to count up how much money you have in real life, put it in the envelopes in Goodbudget (on iPhone, you tap "more" and then "add money"), and then whenever you spend money tap "add transaction" and remove the amount you spent from the applicable envelope. I make sure to always get receipts, and then when I get home at the end of the day or week, I add a transaction for each receipt. If you only use cards, you can reference your card statement to put all your transactions into Goodbudget, too.

Penny, if you know how much you intend to spend each month (or week or whatever your budget period is), you can creat a “Fill” to add that much money to each envelope from your Unallocated balance (that’s money in your bank account but not yet assigned a job) or from New Income (if you want to immediately assign any money you get or earn). If those values are always the same, you can even have the Fill repeat itself as often as is appropriate. With money in each envelope, you’re ready to spend it with Transactions. Hope that helps!
