Merge / combine envelopes

I've got a couple of envelopes that could be combined together (eg School Excursion fees and School Library fees). These may as well be just School Fees.I didn't notice this when I setup EEBA envelopes.

Is there a way to combine the two and have the transactions with one envelope become associated with the other envelope? (I'm thinking there isn't therefore the idea is to allow this).

I guess this is a conundrum for you as the less envelopes people use the lower 'plan' they can use and hence may help people save money and potentially drive less revenue for you (vs convenience and functionality).

As an EEBA user, I want to be able to change an envelope from "regular" (ie monthly) to "irregular/annual" without loosing the transactions already associated with that envelope.so I can better organise my envelopes.

(All you're doing is editing the envelope "mode" really)

On EEBA's latest web release, you can now change monthly (or bi-monthly, etc) envelopes to irregular / annual envelopes and vice versa. Go to Envelopes...Edit Budgets. Then, for the envelope you want to move, click the link to "change type."

Hi Ian, thanks for the post.

You're right, there currently isn't a way to combine two envelopes. It's definitely not that we want people to use more envelopes. More that there are more good suggestions than we can get to!

We've had both of these suggestions made before, and I've added your voice in our tracker.

second the merge request - I've set up loads of envelopes, but I can see that as I get more confident that I'm budgeting correctly could merge these into fewer, but wouldn't want to delete them and all the transactions held within.

Hi Jo,

I've added your comments to that item. Currently the easiest way to merge two Envelopes would be to simply reassign all the transactions of one to the other, then to delete the empty Envelope. Depending on how long you've been using EEBA though, this may be a fair bit of work, so I can see how an automatic "merge" option would be helpful. Thanks!

I too would like this. When one is using all envelopes alloted and would like to add another, one must delete one to add another. Deleting an envelope loses transaction data. If one could merge two envelopes to make it a dual purpose envelope like an "Energy" envelope to handle both gas heat and electric, one could then create another envelope for another purpose without losing transaction data.

As one uses Goodbudget over time, one learns to reorganize envelopes to better reflect their changing priorities.

This would allow one to reorganize envelopes easily without losing transaction data.

Just my 2 cents, for what it's worth.

Thank you for creating such an excellent budgeting app!

cheers!

Hi John,

Thanks for your thoughts! I can definitely see the value in being able to merge Envelopes.

However, to clarify a bit, when you delete an Envelope, you won't actually lose the transaction data in that Envelope. Rather, those transactions are no longer assigned to an Envelope, but they're still present in your Household. At that point, you can reassign them to a new Envelope, or leave them unassigned if you're lazy like me :D

I've got your vote down too for this request.

Thanks!

Hi Karisa,

I understand you don't have enough resources for this development, but this feature could be a great change for us.

Kind regards,

Please ad another voice to this request.

My husband and I have been using EEBA for about 8 months and love it! When we initially set up the envelopes, we had our daughter's school activities and other activities separated. There is no need for this and it is, at times, confusing, so we would like to merge them.

Thanks!

Hi Sandra,

We're really glad that you and your husband love EEBA and find it useful for your budgeting needs! Thanks for letting us know why you'd use an Envelope Merge function--I can see how helpful it would be to be able combine all of your daughter's activity Transactions into one Envelope. Your voice has been added to our Features Request Tracker.

+1 this request. It's especially helpful as budgets change over time and EEBA helps you get better at budgeting. I got my fiance started using EEBA and we just rolled our budgets together into one; this would have been really helpful.

Please add this merge option to your todo list!! I've been using EEBA for over a year and love it but as stated by others, as I get better at budgeting, the less envelopes I need but don't want to lose the history.

I was building a house and ended up creating tons of envelopes to track different expenses (plumbing, electrical, furnitures, civil, mechanical, etc...). I have a envelope called "New House" with like 30 sub-envelopes underneath.

Now that my house is complete, I would love to be able to merge those into one envelope to clean up and simplify the number of envelopes in my homescreens.

I think this is a needed feature.

Cannot see how far this has got but merging envelopes gets my vote. Being new to GB I et my budget up in a very granular way. Now I am geting used to the software I realise I could cut own the number of envelopes used. So +1 for the feature request.

I also stumbled into this problem.. I need to be more efficient, and no way I am going to reassigned 5 months worth of transactions from multiple different envelopes manually. This idea has been around for 5 years now, no update?

Hi Octavianus,

Thanks for checking in. Currently, we don't have any updates regarding this feature. It's been added to our tracker. However, because we are a small team of people, we have to prioritize what we work on. As a result, we've been working on other more requested features. I hope that makes sense.

Currently, to merge two Envelopes, your best bet is to manually reassign those transactions to from one Envelope to the other.

I know that's not an ideal solution, but I hope this helps, for now.

No, not going to manually edit 4 years of transactions.  That's what computers are for.

Hi Sandra,

I can definitely see that would take a lot of work and time. I apologize there isn't a better solution at this point.

We really do appreciate knowing that this feature in important to you. It helps us prioritize what we are going to work on next.

If you'd like, you're welcome to check out our Roadmap. It has more detail on the features that we are working on: https://goodbudget.com/roadmap/

I hope this helps.

The issue is the backlog itself. It is very slim (basically only mobile support). On another thread you verified a decent bug that I and other people are having (goals not showing correctly at the top) and gave no concrete info on where it fits in the pipeline. I think you have a good software and you are very active on this forum, but there is a lack of information seemingly being given. People who pay for a product should be given a big more insight in my opinion.

Karisa, I think Lee has a point. There are known bugs. These horrible little chaps arise during development and are to be expected. Equally there is an expectation these will be fixed. This does not seem to happen, we just get comments such as - it is not on our road map or we are a small team and cannot do everything at once. Everything has to be prioritised I agree but I really do feel you should take a few weeks off from development and use that space go back and fix those bugs. Time spent bringing some of the functionality up to date would also be well spent - especially in the realms of archiving.

As Lee says great software but my take is that it will not remain the way if you let those bugs type issues hang round.

I have been trying to amend above post (edit) for typos. I can make the changes but when I hit submit the changes are not sticking (they have gone when I revisit the page). Can't say that I have noticed this before - is it just me?

Thanks :-)

It seems to have corrected itself. May have been a connection glitch.

Hi Lee and Colin,

We hear ya! We do have a backlog, and while we put out bug fixes regularly, we can certainly hear that it seems bugs don't get out the door fast enough (if ever). We're Goodbudget users too and get annoyed by certain very old bugs too.

We think you have a point. This conversation with you is sparking a discussion among us about how we can improve our maintenance process of prioritizing bugs, fixing them, and communicating about what we're doing. So thanks for reminding us to take another look at the way we do maintenance.

In case it helps, we are in fact in the middle of a web and Android maintenance sprint at the moment. But of course, we know one set of bug fixes isn't enough.

We hope you know that we do value and appreciate everything you're saying to help us do our jobs better and improve Goodbudget for everyone.

Thanks for listening

Checking in and adding my voice to this request as well.  It's a very important one to me.  As a long-time subscribing user, I have a ton of history that I use in reporting to understand how I have budgeted.  When the time comes to close out an envelope, I need the ability to quickly move all transactions over to a new one as a merge.

As an example, I just bought a new house and then sold my old one.  However, I was paying 2 mortgage payments for a period of time - so I needed 2 different envelopes.  Now, I need to merge in my payment history of the old mortgage payment envelope into the new so that I don't have to look at it anymore but still keep the history for reporting.

Merging envelopes OR mass updating transactions would be very, very nice to have.

Could not agree more. Have been with GB for less than a year and am finding it annoying that I cannot merge envelopes or even hide those that are now redundant. I cannot understand why this sort of thing is on the not planned list.
