Move envelopes between annual and monthly

I didn't see this as a FAQ -- is it possible to move an envelope from monthly to annual or vice-versa?

If it is not possible, will I run into problems if I delete an envelope from one category and recreate it in the other with the same name?

Hi Ted,

Right now it is not possible to move an envelope in that way. It's a feature we have been working on already for the website, but is not ready for release yet.

If you delete an envelope from one category and recreate it with the same name, the problem is that none of your historical transactions from the original envelope will show up in your new envelope. EEBA keeps track of envelope transactions based on her own internal ID numbers, not based on the envelope name.

Matt,

Does it look like this feature will be release soon because I want to be able to do the same thing? Thanks.

@triggs399, sorry for the delayed response. Unfortunately I don't have an ETA for this feature.

Just wanted to update this thread. You can now change monthly (or bi-monthly, etc) envelopes to irregular / annual envelopes and vice versa through EEBA on the web. Go to Envelopes...Edit Budgets. Then, for the envelope you want to move, click the link to "change type."

If you don't see the "change type" links, just [click to show] all your envelopes -- monthly and irregular, and then the "change type" links should show up.

Hi Chi-En Yu,

I've been using a workaround to use an Annual/Irregular envelope as a Monthly envelope, and was delighted to see that one can now convert them on the website.

When I went to the website to convert it, I found the links next to the Monthly envelopes, but no links next to the Annual/Irregular envelopes to convert those to Monthly envelopes.

What is the procedure for converting the Annual/Irregular envelopes?

Thanks in advance, Chi-En Yu. :-)

Hi John,

The procedure is the same for changing monthly to annual and vice versa. It's odd that you're seeing the "change type" links for the monthly envelopes but not the annual/irregular ones. What browser / version are you using? And are you on a desktop/laptop or mobile Web?

Also, would you send a screen shot of what you're seeing to support at eebacanhelp dot com?

Thanks!

I also do not see the "change type" links, but I'm not using monthly budgets, but semi-monthly. Does it only work for monthly budgets?

@k.klutch

It should work for all budget periods -- monthly, weekly, semi-monthly, and every two weeks; I just tried it on my own account and the links showed up correctly for all four budget periods.

It's strange that you're not seeing the links. Do you see any "change type" links on the screen at all? If so, for which envelopes?

Would you also send an email to support at eebacanhelp dot com? Please include (1) the browser / version you are using, (2) whether you're using a desktop / laptop or mobile web, and (3) a screenshot. This information will help us try to reproduce the issue.

Thanks!

Hi Chi-En Yu,

I'm using Internet Explorer 8 on an XP netbook. I can see the "X" next to the Annual/Irregular envelopes, but no links, at all.

I'd send you a picture, but I'm not sure how to do that.

Hi Chi-En Yu,

I just found the links. I didn't see them earlier because they wrapped to the next line for the Annual/Irregular envelopes.

Sorry for the confusion.

@John -- Great to hear that you can see them on the next line.

@k.klutch -- I neglected to point out that you need to have both Semi-monthly envelopes and Irregular / Annual Envelopes showing in order to see the "change type" links. On Envelopes...Edit Budgets, scroll down to the green bar that says Irregular / Annual Envelopes and hit "[click to show]." Then the "change type" links will show up. Let me know if this works for you.

I also want to change my annual envelopes to monthly.  I'm not seeing anything that says "change type".
At the top of the listing of envelopes, I hit add/edit.  Then when I hit the edit button beside an annual envelope, I see a dropdown menu that offers "every 2 mo; every 3 mo; every 6 mo; annual; or goal".
What am I missing?
Thanks,
Jeannie

Hi Jeannie,

Sorry for the confusion! The original official answer to this thread referred to a solution that was only possible on EEBA, the precursor to Goodbudget. You can still change your Envelope type in Goodbudget, but the process is different now.

You can now move your Envelopes from Monthly to Annual or vice versa (or between any types of Envelope) by dragging and dropping them in your Envelopes list. You can see instructions and a video guide on doing that in our Help Centre in this article.

Hope that helps!

Wow, that was easy!  Thanks, Alex, for getting back to me so quickly!  I'm really enjoying using Goodbudget.
