I have used two other envelope products: YNAB and Neobudget.
I loved Neobudget for it's simplicity. However it was too simple and I wanted something more robust.
I then used YNAB. The concepts were good but the user interface was way too confusing. Looking at 3 months of budgets and how the money flowed between them was a headache. Not to mention the rollover balance to next month by subtracting from grand total. I found myself spending too much time at the end of month just getting it prepared for next month. It was just too much to grasp.
Then I found you guys, Goodbudget. The interface was simple to use. The web screen is 'clean' and uncluttered. The android version is beautiful and my wife can totally follow along. At the end of the day the user has to be comfortable in using the product. I am now at my one year anniversary and I am sticking with you guys.
Thank you so much for a great product.
Wow! Thanks for the huge compliment! We love hearing stories like these. It's clear you take a lot of care in budgeting, and I'm happy you've found something that's comfortable and easy for both you and your wife. (And, I'm happy it's Goodbudget :D )
Here's to many more years of (Good)budgeting!
I truly do understand your concern that the planning ahead for the use of extra funds in the next month is not actually addressed so closely in GoodBudget.
YNAB allows one to plan ahead by rolling the calendar forward so one can distribute extra funds into next month's envelopes, in advance, without affecting this month's budget. That is the difference between GoodBudget's and YNAB's own individual philosophy.
Goodbudget handles this in a different way. The storage of next month's funds can be held all together in Unallocated and can be distributed from Unallocated at the beginning of the next month, focusing upon reflecting each envelopes current status in the current month. GoodBudget always first focuses on providing for the current month's needs and allowing one to isolate extra funds together in Unallocated for future months' use.
For me, I'm comfortable waiting until the next month when I may have a better idea of how best to distribute those extra funds.
You are more comfortable completing actions on more details ahead of time for future months.

Goodbudget staff, please add this suggestion to the list of suggested improvements. This would give GoodBudget the very capability that its competition already has, without imposing its competition's confusing complexity! This one idea could actually make GoodBudget much more competitive! :-)
