Negative Balance in Envelope

I have gone over the allocated amount in an envelope- so the balance is negative and showing up in red.  How do I reconcile those accounts from extra money in unallocated, or is that money automatically deducted from unallocated already?

Hi, Julie.  There are a few ways you could handle this.  The first is to do a "Transfer" transaction and transfer the desired amount from "Unallocated" (or any other envelope for that matter) into the overdrawn envelope.  Alternatively, you could do a Fill to transfer the money the same way.  Typically a Fill transaction is used when you are transferring money to multiple envelopes.

On the web version, simply click the "Add Transaction" button and select the Transfer tab in the transaction dialog box.  From there you can specify an envelope or account transfer.  On the mobile version, select Envelope Transfer from the overflow menu (three vertical dots).  You must be on the Envelopes tab to do this (you can do an Account Transfer from the Accounts tab).  NOTE: I use the Android version and the iOS version might be a little different than I described.  Each OS has a slightly different user interface.

You could wait until you do your main budgeting Fill and transfer extra money into that envelope to cover the overage, but I personally think it is better to get in the habit of keeping every envelope in the green (aka, black).  This way you never spend money you don't have.

I hope that helps.

Hi Julie,

Wayne pretty comprehensively covered how to get money from your other Unallocated (or other Envelopes) into that overdrawn Envelope in the comment above me. But I just wanted to chime in to specifically address a question you mentioned in your original post to say that no, when your Envelope goes into a negative balance, that money is not deducted automatically from Unallocated or from any other Envelope to make up for it.

Hope that helps!
