negative unallocated balance after deleting an old envelope that was in negative

I recently moved, which came with all sorts of unplanned expenses. I have recorded this expenses in an envelope titled "unplanned expenses" which put that envelope in the negative. After a few weeks of being at my new home, I wanted to start fresh and no longer use that envelope. I deleted it from my budget envelopes and now Goodbudget is confused. It changed the amount of money that is in my bank account, which I then corrected view the add/edit button under the "accounts" tab. After correcting the amount in my bank account, my unallocated balance is now negative when it should not be.

The simple version of my question is: how do I reset my unallocated balance after deleting an envelope that was negative without that deleted envelope's debt being stored in the budgeting system?

I have tried making a dummy income and a dummy expenses to fix the issue, but I have had no luck, since it seems that all of the transactions in my history that were in that deleted envelope are still affecting my records.

Hi Tyler,

Good question! When you delete an Envelope with a balance, negative or positive, that balance is transferred to Unallocated.

To fix that, what you can do is search for the transactions that were in the Envelope and re-assign them to a new Envelope. That will transfer that expense amount to the new Envelope and remove it from Unallocated.

Hope that helps!

Hi Shannon,

Good question! If Unallocated is negative, it may be that you've filled your Envelopes with more money than you have in your Goodbudget Account(s).

Feel free to shoot me an email at support@goodbudget.com with your Household username so I can take a closer look and give you better feedback.

Thanks!
