Progress Bars - Monthly Envelopes

Cannot get my heard around the progress bars. I have a budget that starts on the first of the month. I set up an envelope with a value of say 100.00 to meet a monthly expense and fill it on the 1st. The bill comes in on the 10th and is less than I budgeted for, say it is 75.00, so I am left with a balance of 25.00. However the progress bar says I am now behind by 75.00 which is not true - I am ahead by 25.00. Am I missing something or is the progress bar just a reflection of filled amount over budget target amount?

For monthly envelopes, the progress bar reflects where Goodbudget expects your spending to be throughout the month and starts the month at the far right and progresses to the left each day of the month until it reaches the far left on the last day of the month.  This is useful for envelopes for which you have small, frequent transactions, such as groceries or gas.  It does not work well for envelopes where you make infrequent but large transactions, such as mortgage, car payment, or utilities.

What it does is help you see if you are spending too much in a particular envelope and is a good indicator if you are spending too much or too fast in a certain category.  Not useful for car payments, but very useful to make sure you do not run out of grocery money by the end of the month.

Does that help, or did I not understand the question (it happens sometimes)?

As I thought thankyou. The bars are not therefore universally helpful and can in fact be misleading. It should be possible to switch them on/off.

Hi Colin,

Thanks for your feedback. It sounds like there should be a feature to remove the ahead/behind line for envelopes that are paid in full once each period, like bills. I've noted this in our features tracker for future consideration.

Thanks Becky. For completeness I should say it also provides incorrect info when there is an envelope that is used for multiple fixed expenses. If those expenses go through at different times of the month then once the first has been paid, therefore reducing envelope balance below the fill amount, it says the envelope is behind when that is not the case. Seems the implementation of the tracking line is badly flawed and needs attention quickly. It needs more than just consideration.
