Reordering envelopes in the browser is horrendous

I'm trying to reorder my envelopes by dragging and dropping (using Chrome) and it's complete pot luck whether the envelope goes where you intended to go or decides to go to the top of the list. Furthermore, everytime I move an envelope, the page refreshed so I'm back at the top of the page and need to scroll down if I'm moving envelopes near the bottom of the page.

P.S. I just tried the same in Microsoft Edge to see if it was a Chrome specific issue. It wasn't, reordering still doesn't work properly in Edge.

Hi Makeem95,

Sorry for the troubles while reordering your Envelopes on the web! I haven't been able to replicate what you're experiencing with Chrome or Edge.

Can you let me know how many Envelopes you have? Also, can you clarify what you mean when you say the page refreshed?

If you can, email me at support@goodbudget.com with your Household username, so I can take a closer look.

Thanks!

In total I have 35 envelopes.

Please ignore the bit about the refresh, I thought that's what it was doing, but it isn't What it IS doing is after I drag & drop an envelope, it goes back to the top of the envelopes page so I have to scroll down again to move around my Goals envelopes.

I've also tried moving envelopes around on the Android app and it works well, but the envelope ordering does not seem to sync back to the web display.

I'll email you my household name. I'm now having problems just trying to move the top envelope in the Goals section down to another position. It just stays where it is!

I have Firefox and have had the same issue.  I have finally been able to get them to go where I want them, but it takes trial and error.

Hi all,

It sounds like what Makeem95 was experiencing is a bug that we've recently become aware that affects Goal and Annual Envelopes. The bug makes it difficult to reorder the Envelopes on the web. When moving, the Envelope either jumps to the top of the Goal section, or to a random spot.

This is on our bug tracking for future fixing, but we don't have an official ETA for when a fix will be released.

For now, like Rene' said, it takes some trial and error on the web to get the Envelopes in the right spot, but I would suggest reordering the Envelopes there.

It is possible to reorder on the phone apps. However, doing so will create a 'Custom Order' on your phone. Once that's created, the phone app will never automatically sync back to the web order. If that's not an issue for you, then reordering on the phone app is a good option.

I do apologize for the inconvenience and hassel! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Great thanks for that explanation.

One last thing: I cleared the app data of the Goodbudget Android app and logged in again, hoping to get the envelopes to sync up to the order in the web version, but it hasn't and is still in the customised order.

Does this mean I can NEVER get the mobile version to sync the envelope order with the web version ever again?!

Hi Makeem95,

That's right. Once you create a Custom Order on your phone, that will trump the web version going forward on that device.

If you make a change you'd like to see on your phone, you'll have to reorder on your phone separately.

Sorry for the troubles!

Could you uninstall the app and re-install?

Hi Rene',

That's a good question! Uninstalling/reinstalling won't override the preferences that were created when the custom order was made. The phone will retain that custom order.

Hope that makes sense.

It seems ridiculous that reordering envelopes on your mobile permanently breaks the link with the ordering of the web envelopes!

Couldn't you add a setting toggle to reset the custom ordering on your account?

Hi Makeem95,

Sorry you're unhappy with the feature! It can be useful for folks who share their Goodbudget Household with multiple devices, with each person wanting their Envelopes ordered a certain way on their phones.

Right now, there isn't a way for you to break that link on your phone so that it syncs back to the web. But, I can see how that would be helpful. I've added that to our request features tracker for future consideration.

I hadn't thought about multiple users.  I didn't even realize that the order of my envelopes hadn't synced, lol.  I went into the phone and re-organized them to match the desktop and I shouldn't have to mess with them now for the most part.
