Request for scheduled transactions and the Now button

First off, I love GoodBudget.  It's a great tool  to assist me with my household finances and management.

One thing that is always extra work for me is the NOW button on scheduled transactions. Pressing NOW changes the date of the transaction to the current date.  I simply want it to preserve the original date and do everything just as it does now. Allocations to balances and envelopes today are fine. I just need the date of the expected transaction to be accurate.

Suggestion
Add a global preference setting so the Now button changes the date to today, or keeps the original scheduled date.  Maybe some users like the current function and need to preserve it.

or

Add check boxes to the transactions window so I can select all my transactions that I processed with NOW, allowing me to mass update the date for the selected items.

Thanks again for a great product.

Hi Paul - Thanks for the suggestion! For your first thought, are you thinking of a global setting (perhaps located somewhere in the Household preference section) where you can specify that anytime you press Now, the date will either change to the current date, or always remain the originally selected date? If so, I can see how that would be helpful. I've added both of your thoughts into our request features tracker for future consideration! Thanks again.

Hi Chelsea,

One way to submit feature requests is to make a new forum post to discuss your idea or request (click the "New Post" button at the top of the page) -- I see you've done just that and created a new post for your scheduled transactions request. You can also share your requests or ideas by reaching out to us directly at support@goodbudget.com at any time.

Hope that helps!

Hi there. I'm back, bumping up this post for a way to customize the Now button. I'd like to see a Household preference for the Now button 1) Keep current scheduled date or 2) Use today's date.  Feel free to find a better way to do this :)   Here is my situation that I face each payday (26 times a year).   I have all my regular transactions scheduled.  Today is payday (Yippie!)  Now I need to press the NOW button for all my scheduled transactions up to February 11th.  There are about 15 transactions to post.  They will all post nicely with todays date (28th). Then I need to go into each of them and change the date back to the original scheduled date when the bill actually posts to my account.  I want to keep the funds allocated, just the way it works now. Please help :)   Do other people fiddle with the dates or do you just leave it with the wrong date and don't worry about it?  Thanks for listening.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for adding more detail about why a feature like this would be helpful to you! It sounds like you want your scheduled transactions to appear as though they've posted in Goodbudget (so that it removes the expense from your Envelope balances), but be future dated for the day that it will post in your bank account. Is that right?

If so, currently, the work-around you're doing now would be my suggestion. I know it's not as elegant, but it does work with a little bit of effort. Alternatively, you can try letting the scheduled transaction naturally post on the date that it's scheduled for. With this option, however, the expense would not be removed from the Envelope's balance until it posts.

In the meantime, I've updated the notes in our requested features tracker to include your added details.

I hope this helps!

Is there any update on this at all. This is a significant downside for me as I seem to get hit twice here in the uk. First, scheduled transactions do not post automatically, not promptly anyway, and this is a uk/pacific time zone issue. An now I find that if I choose to post scheduled transactions manually the scheduled date is ignored and is replaced by the date upon which the transaction was manually posted. That all creates a lot of unnecessary work.

Thanks
Colin

Hi Colin,

Thanks for checking in on this. Currently, we don't have any updates on this feature. It's been added to our features tracker, but I don't have word on if/when we will work on this.

It seems that part of the problem is the time-zone issue. We hope to have a custom time-zone feature incorporated into Goodbudget, so that [Pending] transactions post according to your time. However, we don't have an official ETA on when this will be released.

If you'd like, you're welcome to check out our Roadmap (https://goodbudget.com/roadmap/). It has a bit more detail on what we are working on, and you'll see Custom Time Zones under the Dreaming section.

Thanks again!

This is my number one gripe about GB usability. Like others, I enter scheduled transactions on payday so my envelopes include them at that time. That shows me what my real available balances are until the next payday. I don't want to have to reset the dates like I do now. Even having the Record Now button open a window where I could change or not change the transaction before it records would be preferable to the current process.

Hi David,

Thanks for adding your voice! I've added your vote for this request to our tracker.

For now, this isn't something that we're working on, but we'll keep this thread updated if that changes.

Feel free to take a look at what we are working on on our Roadmap. Right now, we're working on Bulk Edit for the web, so that you can select and edit multiple transactions at once.

Thanks!

Can you add my vote for this also? I would love to be able to post scheduled transactions so that they appear on the scheduled date, not "Now" without having to edit each transaction. I like to project my available funds into the future.

So long as any change is user selectable I do not care either way. I actually like the way things are as I see GB as a budgeting tool for managing cash on a day to day basis - it provides a discipline which says if the money is not there I cannot spend it and I like that approach. Future bills are taken care of in the envelopes and what I do is have one envelope called 'cash available for spending'.  When I am filling my envelopes I also fill this one and that is the amount of cash in hand for the month. Using the process suggested here seems to reduce GB to no more than a glorified bank statement and renders the envelope system redundant as a result - why would you need envelopes if the expenses have already been posted. The envelopes would all be empty (assuming they had been properly filled in the first place)! Or am I missing something?
