Search transactions in IOS

I would like to submit a suggestion, for a future iOS release:
Include a search functionality for transactions.
It would be great to be able to search by text or by amount within an envelope or across all transactions to see what has been logged. This is available on the website.

Hi Armin,

Thanks for the suggestion - I can see how it would be handy to be able to search for Transactions on your iPhone while you're on the go. I've added your voice to this suggestion in our feature request tracker.

For now, you can use the mobile website's search functionality by going to the More tab from the iPhone app, then choosing Transactions. I know that's not the same as having search built into the app, but hopefully that can work for you for now.

Thanks again for the suggestion,
Chi-En

Great, thanks for adding it to the backlog. Not urgent, more a nice-to-have from my side. And any additional feature obviously comes with a cost, in this case with potentially additional clutter on the screen real-estate, like a button...

I find it very important that the search function be included in the IOS app. My partner has an iPad and last time I was using it to check on the budget, I was confused that I could not search for transactions.... I thought I was missing something that was there but differently situated (as is often the case when I have to use the alien environment of IOS) but seeing this thread, it does not exist ! Wow ! Please bring the IOS app on par with the Android version !

Have a good day ! !

I would also like a search feature in the App. Quite often I know I have bought an item and I need to search to find out how much, when and who from (ie the transaction record). This would be very useful for a lot of people I would think.

Is it true that searching transactions works on Android but not iOS?

Hi J,

It's true the Android app does have Search functionality, while the iOS app does not.

We have considered adding this feature to the iOS app over the years, but each time we've decided against implementing it. One reason is because it's not a popular request. And, compared with other requests, we've decided to work on features that have been more popular, like Bulk Edit on the web, and Scheduled Transactions on mobile.

If you want to see what we've done recently, feel free to check out our changelog. Check out our roadmap if you want to see where we're going.

Hope that makes sense!

Thank you Karisa for your thoughtful reply. It sounds like the company has extremely limited resources directed at the iOS app. I guess we'll need to be patient ... sure would like to see a features voting system so we could see what is most requested. Or even a public bug tracker ...

Hi J,

It's true we have limited resources as we're a pretty small team. However, that's not directed at any one platform specifically. It just so happens that our most recent updates have been targeted at web, and usually, we work on one platform at a time.

I do appreciate your ideas about a voting system. In the GetSat forum, you can actually add your vote to a thread by clicking on the purple Vote button in the top right corner of the screen. You can also see how many others have voted for that feature.

Thanks again!

I would like to request the search functionality on the iOS app! My wife and I are recent users of Goodbudget and it is tremendously helpful for me to search my transactions to make sure we accounted for all of our transactions from a particular vendor, especially when catching up in hindsight. I am lucky enough to be able to search from my Android phone while on the go, but my wife is unable to access that function from her iOS phone.

Could you please reconsider adding it as a function for iOS? It seems unfortunate that one platform would not have the same features as other platforms.

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for sharing why this feature would be helpful for you. We're not working on this right now, but I've added your vote to our features tracker for future consideration.

Thanks!

So apparently this was a popular enough request for Android so you added the search feature there, but it isn’t a popular request on iOS?

Is iOS search functionality significantly more difficult to implement compared to Android? If it helps - There’s sample code at https://developer.apple.com/documenta...

Hi J,

Sorry for the late reply. The Goodbudget Android app actually predates the iOS app by some time, so as a result of there being a period of time where the Android app was the primary focus of development, it has some features that have not yet been built on the iOS app.

This feature is certainly on our radar, but we aren’t working on it at this moment. If you’re curious what we’re currently thinking about and working on, you can always check out our Roadmap (https://goodbudget.com/roadmap/). You might notice that iOS search is there in the “Dreaming” section.

Yay! It looks like it was moved to design. I’ll say that as someone coming off the android app to iOS, the search function made reconciliation much easier, as several times one transaction was entered under the wrong account or when my credit card changes transaction dates as it moves from pending to cleared and I could easily tell if the next transaction was from the old reconciliation period or new. Thanks and I hope to see it in testing soon!!

Hi featherstories,

It has indeed been moved to "Design" on our roadmap, we're glad to hear that's exciting for you! Thanks also for sharing your story on why the search feature is valuable to you, that's helpful to hear.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Search in app.

Please include search transactions feature in the app. I feel like we have been waiting too long for this and I know I and other users have suggested this in the past. It’s very time consuming to find something when you don’t remember the exact date and you are nowhere near a computer. I am a paying customer and just renewed again. I feel like the app is lacking in a lot of areas.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your continued advocacy for this feature, and for sharing why you would find such a feature helpful.

We’ve just released an update for the Goodbudget iPhone app that includes the ability to run searches of your transaction history. The new search feature can be used by tapping the magnifying glass in the upper-left of the Transactions tab. You can search for transactions by either inputting a keyword or amount, as well as by using filters for Envelope, Account, and/or Date.

You should be able to download this app update by visiting the App Store and downloading version 2.4.

We hope the new search feature is what you had been imagining, and please let us know if you have any thoughts or questions.

Works great - very smooth and fast. Thanks Alex and the Goodbudget team that worked hard on this!

My only suggestions are very minor:
- In the release notes for iOS, you might want to indicate how to search. I was expecting to pull down from the top and had to refer to this post to find that I had to use the thin/non-bold magnifying glass icon. The magnifying glass icon could be improved by making the round part bolder.
- The search bar says you can search by keyword, amount, and more. What’s the “more” part?

Hi J,

Thanks for your feedback. Glad to hear you're enjoying it so far. Unfortunately we're unable to change the release notes after the app has been published, but we're working on sending out some announcements and further information in the near future, so thanks for that suggestion. I've also passed on your thoughts about the magnifying glass icon to our design team for consideration in a future update.

The "more" refers to the fact that you can type out the name of an Envelope or Account, then tap on it in the search results to filter specifically by that Envelope or Account. Hope that makes sense!
