I would really like to be able to turn off the save location feature on the iPhone. This is because when I enter my Kroger receipts at home I do not want it tracking my home location for Kroger.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for posting! It is possible to permanently disable that feature. Just head to your iPhone Settings > Goodbudget, and then change the Location setting to 'Never.'

Hope that helps!

Hi Karisa

I have tried this and it does nothing in Goodbudget. What am I missing? Have you guys tested this on the latest versions? Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike,

You're right! Turning your Location Permissions to 'Never' does not disable your location from being attached to a transaction and Payee. That is definitely not the intended behavior, and I've put this bug on our tracker for fixing.

However, I've tested the current version of Goodbudget on iPhone, and when you de-select the 'Save location to transaction' on the Add Transaction screen your location will not be matched to that transaction and Payee. That does mean you'll need to de-select that option while on adding a new transaction until we release a fix.

Thanks again

This is still happening for me, I have my location permission set to "never" and only just noticed that your app has been saving my location data for the last year (maybe longer - I lost patience going back over my records). When I go to historic entries and try to deselect "keep location information" and then save, it doesn't save the selection. It just keeps resetting to green. It's really annoying and feels like a data violation. I do not have the time to try and go through several years of entries trying to remove the location setting (that resets itself anyway) when I made sure to deny your app access to location in my general settings when i first downloaded it. Given that you've known about this bug for over a year I find it incredibly suspicious that you have let it remain for so long. I like your app but am now considering deleting it permanently and finding another less intrusive one to use.

Hi Kat,

Sorry for the continued issues caused by the location settings. First, I totally understand your suspicion over the unwanted data saving, so I just wanted to be clear that we do not use or reference that data in anyway, and it solely exists for the purposes of those who want to use it to have Goodbudget suggest Payees based on location.

We're a small team here with limited resources, so I can't make any promises about when we might look into this issue, but I can assure you that it's on our list and we're aware it's an issue. Sorry again for the continued problems you've been experiencing with this.

Karisa,

Related to this issue... Before I realized there was a 'Save location to transaction' option when entering transactions, I saved all of mine that way.  So I have a couple questions related to this:

1. It would be good to be able to make this feature default to 'off' within Goodbudget, but keep the Location Permissions 'On', if that makes sense.  In other words, I would like to be able to keep 'Location Permissions' (the overall setting) turned 'On', so that location will be used when I select the location to be stored when entering a transaction.

2. Since I didn't know about the location feature in the beginning, now I have several (no telling how many) transactions saved with invalid locations.  Is there a way to globally remove all locations for all transactions; thus, starting the slate clean again?

Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim,

Thanks for posting! Your suggestion does makes sense and I've added that to our tracker for future consideration.

For your other question, it is possible to override those old locations and attach new ones to Payees, so that they're suggested to you in the correct spot. But, you cannot necessarily remove them to have a clean slate.

For example, if you have Starbucks popping up when you're home, next time you go to Starbucks be sure to save the location there so it overrides your home location.

Hope that helps!

Karisa,

Thanks for the reply.  Couple suggestions that I think would help many...

1)  Make the 'Keep the location information' option default to OFF (at the bottom of every transaction).  This would eliminate all unintended location saves.

2)  Add a configuration/options setup to the app that gives us (the users) the ability to default the above feature to OFF.  Still provide the toggle on the 'Edit Transaction' page, but allow me the ability to have it default to OFF/Disabled.

3)  Currently the way this works is even if I enter the transaction at the correct location, if I later open the transaction, the app will default the 'keep the location' back ON, then if I make a change and Save it (without recognizing that this has switched back ON. it will now save the location.  This should not happen... it should not automatically change this selection from what was previously saved.

3)  Provide a way for us to remove/clear all previously saved location information.

BTW, I see several posts on here where people are having issues with this feature, followed by your saying that you've added these suggestions to the list of issues to fix/review.

The issues related to this topic have been raised several months ago.

How long will it take to get these things fixed?

How do we know if/when an item has been reviewed and a decision has been made to fix/not fix an issue?

Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your thoughts! We consider every feature that comes in. If we decide to move forward with a request, we put it on our Roadmap, which you can see here: https://goodbudget.com/roadmap/

I've added your votes for the different things you requested to our tracker, so thanks for those suggestions. I did just want to add about point #3 you made that editing an old transaction should not update the stored location for that transaction, regardless of whether the toggle is set to on or off. In other words, you shouldn't find that your transaction location data is being overwritten if you make edits in the future, even if you forget to un-toggle that button!
