Hi everyone,

Just writing to let you all know about the update on the Web. Goodbudget on the Web now has a new look & feel. You’ll see new colors and a new logo the next time you log in to the website.

Even though the colors and logo are different, Goodbudget is still the same! Everything is still in the exact same place -- all your data and all the features you love are right where you expect.  For more details, check out our recent blog post.

Happy budgeting!

Love the new interface. Very modern.  I don't think it is too bright.  Is the app also receiving a makeover?

I actually just sent an email to Good Budget to tell them I thought the new look was visually assaulting.  The colors are just too bright and the font is difficult to read.  It would be great if there was a way to personalize the look.  I know it looks more modern, per Brian's comment, and that's fine, but if you could tone down the brightness, that would be great.  It actually looks more like a child's video game than a financial tool.  As a side note, I believe folks that are color blind cannot see green, purple, and red.

Oh my..... My eye's actually popped wide open when I saw the new layout.  Way to bright.  Please tone it down.

Thanks everyone, for sharing your feedback with us.  We appreciate you taking the time to let us know what you think!

Brian - I’m glad you love the new interface!  The mobile apps will be getting updates too, but those will not be as significant, since most of the core screens in the mobile apps are already consistent with the look you see in the web screenshot above.  In fact, the web update was partly intended to bring our website’s look and feel closer to the mobile apps.

Melissa & rcnunn - It sounds like the new colors don’t fit your personal preferences, which is totally understandable.  However, we don’t have plans to build in personalized skins for the webapp. Currently, we’re prioritizing: an iPhone face lift, Search Transactions on iPhone, and the Goodbudget 101 Course; for each of these, we’ve received repeated feedback that they would significantly enhance the experience of many of our users.  And for our color blind users, we specifically tested for various kinds of colorblindness before publishing these updated colors.

As always, we’re keeping our ears open and use info we gather from all our users to help us decide on priorities.  And you can always see what we're currently working on at goodbudget.com/roadmap

Take care,

Chi-En

Would be very interested to get percentages of those who like / dislike the new interface. Definitely a step backwards in my opinion, but I could be in the minority on that!

No negatives on the look for me. I'm just here to do business. :) However, the "stay signed in for two weeks" isn't working for me since it changed. Any ideas? Thank you!

I agree with the commenters regarding the new format being to bright, bad color scheme.  I liked the old interface much better.  There doesn't seem to be any functionality change so the refresh claiming a modern feel seems a bit overplayed.  The old color scheme and logo/button design was much better.  Is there a way to switch back to the old format?

Hi rcnunn - Thanks for asking. We don't have plans to create a Dark Mode option. It sounds like you're asking because the colors might be too bright for you? Can you let us know which ones aren't working for you?

All that white is just to bright. Maybe you could tone down the white? The previous version had white of course but maybe the green softened it. I certainly don’t mind having some color but staring at a bright white electronic monitor for any length of time just isn’t good for ones vision. Hence the movement to dark mode.

Unfortunatelly I agree with the vocal majority here. I wanted to like the redesign, I was excited about it and checking the web to see if it was live yet, but for me personally it was a big disappointment. Not to  take credit from any of your work on this project, since it is great and this won't make me stop using it. And, the redesign does not prevent anyone from using the site.
To gather some points, from my own perspective:
  • Too bright indeed. The background, the colors. The bright red bars and numbers on white background aren't pleasant to look at at all
  • The font feels too crammed. Is it the same as before? Part of me thinks it is, but somehow ti all feels too tight, too boxy, leading to the next point
  • Design feels outdated. I understand the motivation to refresh the design and make it all more similar to the apps, but it is too boxy, and as someone noted - this together with the bright colors and also the light green and purple accents makes it look a bit childish too
  • The charts look too colorful and feel harder to analyse now. Also, if you check "spending by month" (my personal favorite chart which I would love to see on the app btw), at least for me it doesn't look good with so many colors and the blue links in the envelope names below, again contrasting with the white background.
I intend to keep using goodbudget for many years (and I often recommend it to friends), but I must admit I will avoid the web interface for the near future. It feels like the redesign was done only by engineers (I'm a software engineer myself). I think you should definitely get a hand by someone more design oriented :)

Best regards to all of the team.

Hi Bruno,

Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate you giving us some specific feedback about what's not working for you.

We still have our ears open to everyone's thoughts, and please do let us know if any of the changes begin to impact your ability to use the app.

Thanks again!

Please please bring back the old colors. I feel that it is way to bright and neon colors really distract me from my banking work. I primarily use the web portal. But when I do use the mobile app, it is not this offensive. At least make the color sachem changeable in settings. Perhaps even a dark or night mode.

I am not a fan of the new colors. Maybe provide color themes to choose from.

I love the color purple but it does not work for me in the new design.  It just doesn't work with the green.  I think if it was toned down, it would work better.  I hope you don't move these colors to the app!

I appreciate the move to flat design, however the new colour scheme decreases legibility and contrast.
Small feedback - resolution of new icons are pixelated at 100% on a 2736x1824 display

Hi Brenan,

Thanks for the feedback! Can you let us know which icons are pixelated? Is it the Add Transaction or Fill Envelopes buttons? Or the mascot?

Thanks!

I love the color purple, but why the redesign? There are actual features that we need that would have been a better use of time. No action on being able to fill envelopes based on percentages, no ability to reconcile on the iPhone that I'm aware of.  The phrase, "lipstick on a pig," comes to mind. For the first time, I'm looking at other software options. Sorry.
