GoodGuide.com Grossly Inadequate and Erroenous!

I'm quite disappointed in GoodGuide.com. You guys have a 10 for "Health" Rating to the: Molton Brown Body washes, and based on your reviews, I made the purchase of the expensive product. ($30 for 10fl. bottle). Upon receiving the product and looking at the label, I found it laced with synthetically derived chemicals that have been embraced even by the industry as problematic, viz:

1). Sodium Laureth Sulfate
2). Propylene Glycol
3). Blue 1, Red 33
4). EthylHexyl Methoxycinnamate
5). Butyl MethoxydibenzoylMETHANE
6). PPG-26-buteth-26
7). Ethylhexyl Salicylate
8). Alpha-Isomethyl ionone
9). ButylPhenyl Methylpropional
10). PhenoxyETHANOL

There's at least another 5 ingredients in addition to this list I didn't even mention. This is a body wash given a Health score of "10" by good guide. After all these chemicals, I would need a detox shower, to wash this $30 garbage off my skin.

I am immediately returning this product back to manufacturer, and am no longer using goodguide.com, as you are either colluding with these companies, or are grossly inadequate at your jobs.

  • Could you please provide the name of the specific product you are referring to - the ingredients you list are not included in the ingredient labels we have for various Molton body wash products, so we need to investigate whether we have a problem in a product's ingredient list (which can sometimes occur if the manufacturer only provides a partial ingredient list in its online information about a product but a longer and more problematic list on its actual product label.

  • If you don't have all the ingredients, then you shouldn't post a health rating, as that would be misleading and deceptive business practice. Makes me wonder if you're biased and take $ from manufacturers to give them higher rankings, much like Better Business Bureau charges $$ to bring F grade to an A+.

  • Thanks for the URL - I have found the source of the problem. GoodGuide collects ingredient lists from manufacturer websites, not from product labels (because we do not have the resources to purchase every product available for sale). In this case, Molton Brown provides incomplete ingredient lists online - see for example http://www.moltonbrown.com/store/bath....

Our data scraper/parser looks for signals that a provided ingredient list is incomplete or partial, and we have just introduced an improvement to our ability to catch partial lists (the lead phrase "key" ingredients, which Molton Brown uses). We will blacklist this company's products from our site until we can re-scrape their ingredient lists using the new parser - the product scores that will result will be much lower due to inadequate ingredient disclosure.

We have no financial relationships with manufacturers at all, so your concern about purchased biases ratings is unfounded. We appreciate you reporting the error - it is difficult to ensure the quality of ingredient data because manufacturers are so variable in their commitment to full transparency about what is in in their products.

  • Ok, I understand now how your system works and how this error could take place, and would recommend you not list a rating until you have verified the items yourself, else you will set up your company to loose credibility this way, at least with me.

Thanks for quick response, and I'm glad you have no financial relationships with the companies you rate.
    • Thanks for your feedback - the challenge is the cost associated with ingredient verification - we are exploring whether there are ways to enable GoodGuide users to help us with this by taking pictures of actual product ingredient labels, etc, but it would be prohibitively expensive to actually find and check all the products that are out there.

Not including products until they have verified ingredient lists would mean very limited coverage of current products on the market, so we have opted for ratings based on what a manufacturer discloses online - some do a great job of listing everything in their products, others are deceptive, like Molton Brown
    • Yes, but I would suggest to consider quality over quantity, as you're bound to loose people's trust sooner with your current method. If a product someone searches for isn't in your database, then leave a button there for a person to request you to add it. Sometimes in a rush for progress and development, companies end up tripping over their own ambition. All the best, and hope you can truly live up to your name.

  • I’m extremely ANGRY!
I think the site's ratings would be blank if they verified the product ingredients before placing a rating.

  • Blank rating is more understandable and honorable than a misleading or false one. What's the point of rushing to have a wrong rating and ruin the reputation of a company? In my eyes, and from my experience, goodguide.com has failed.

But hey, in this upside down inside out world, right is wrong and people lie and say it's truth, enslave in name of freedom, and fight wars for peace. So what's a little more misdirection and deception?

  • I totally agree with you 1000%! my comment here was a joke as I find this site to be. On a more serious note, there should be consequences when advising the public with misleading information that could potentially have harmful health effects but Good Guide seems very flippant when their errors are pointed out. IMO this site should be shut down until they can get their act together.

  • I wouldn't go as far as wanting to shut a company down, that would be use of an authority or centralized power to control free market, which would negate a free economy and cause more problems. e.g. Who's gonna watch the watchers? It creates a loop that leads to more problems than it solves.

I can understand your thinking, but would rather, make my point known to the company and let the company make a decision based on my input as well as other people to see what I experienced. Otherwise, they may just fail at their own accord, which would be a natural cycle of a company that didn't have it's customers best interests in mind.

By the way how does GoodGuide.com make their money? They're not a charity.
