GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition Stops Recording On Its Own (Video Included)

(link provided at the end is a visual demonstration of the problem)

Sup team, Frank here. I bought my Gopro Hero 3 Black Edition about a week and a half ago (bestbuy). I thought i had updated before (did the automatic update and it said i didnt need any updates) and started shooting some videos. Unfortunately I started seeing a problem. Whenever i tried to shoot videos, the camera would stop recording on its own. I would get into 2 minutes of a video (sometimes not even) and the camera would just stop as if someone had pressed the record button. Tonight I transferred the manual update files (from the gopro update zip folder) from my computer to my gopro root folder. The camera started updating and i thought that maybe the problem would go away. No, the problem still exists.

I'm thinking it might be my sd card (Sandisk 32gb class 4 micro sd card) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007...

Can you think of any solutions? I'd really appreciate it. Here is the link to a video i made where you can see the problem happening for yourself.

  • I use de Hero 3 B.E. Since 2 month with an 64gb sd card and had no problem till yesterday. It started to stop recording after a few seconds and then I saw that the videos are not closed and I can not see them.
When I started to read this forum I do not understand that there are many people with the same problem and there is no answer from support as
    This is the solution......
Or We take note and are working to find a solution.
Is there someone from GoPro here? Or only the customers have to find the solution?

  • I have a go pro hero 3 also. I got it about a year ago and have used a hand full of times. It will record for just a couple of seconds and then just stop recording and almost like it want to shut down. It even sometimes freezes up and I have to take the battery out just to get it going again.

  • I'm experiencing the same problem. I've had this for less than a year and have had this problem since I first bought it. Generally it will go for 9 - 30 seconds and stop recording. I have to pull the battery out to reboot it.

I got mine figured out the other day. I just updated my camera from the gopro website. It worked for me but don't know if it will work for everybody. Just throwing that out there if you want to try that.

  • For the money, Lexar 32 GB 600X Class 10 will cure alot of recording issues. Gets dicy after 720. Crappy as 1080 is a most excellent all round. Not sure their 64GB Class10 is up to it yet. Have a few. Still use 32GB mostly. Throw out your Sandisk SD's. Samsung makes an excellent SD as well. They will mess you up!

    • Hey All,

      I'm on the fence here.

First I think that the firmware update to the latest version is a must, I believe that is what corrected my problem.

Yes, using a great card is mandatory, but this fragmentation argument bugs me... Not you Aleksandar, I'm not singling you out and I respect your opinion!

Just the notion that a card could get that fragmented to cause this type of problem doesn't ring true.

Yes, if you have a very large Drive fragmentation can cause slowdown problems, but these cards are under 128Gb they're not terabytes.

OK any fragmentation will slow down the read/write process to an extent... a minute extent in these small cards. But enough to cause this problem???

Well if it is, then GoPro has a very flawed product.

OK my last comment about fragmentation...

Well I'm not a memory card guru and I'm not making that claim, but if you are like me, after you get your video in the can, you take it out of the can :) In other words, most of us move our files or delete them after use.

Now unless these cards have some very strange way of doing things... Once the files are deleted, there is no fragmentation.

So, unless the file system reserves the space of the recently deleted files for some unknown reason, the new files should be laid down on the card sequentially... unfragmented.

I'm more than happy to be shown that I'm wrong, so let me know if my frustration with the fragmentation issue holds water.

      Thanks!!!
    • Your desktop operating system may create/remove/modify "hidden" files for things like thumbnail caches, etc each time you insert memory card into your desktop. These small files will linger on the card, and over time cause more and more fragmentation on the card.

Some cards deal with fragmentation better than others.

  • I’m frustrated
Hi, First post and just joined but I have to say I got my Gopro hero 3 black edition for Xmas to use for diving and also for motorcycle and most importantly my DJI phantom (quad copter) I love ariel shots. Now I had many issues first downloading the software. (using Windows Vista) I had to install Mozilla firefox which caused huge problems with pop ups etc. Despite tight security on my PC.
Anyway Where I am going with this is I bought the 64gb memory card (Delkik) or something like that.. sorry I dont have it to hand. And it has been cutting out and saying no SD card. I cant even get it to play on my windows media player now. When I connect my camera to the pc it crashes... so this card is getting ripped apart. I have just bought the samsung card MB-MGCGB/AM (I think thats it) and have to wait... Gopro support promised to email me a link for a format and a cure but havnt so I will be on the phone with them again tomorrow.. and this time wont get off until they solve it.... failing that I am sending this back to the shop and hopefully will find a better alternative... heck I might go back to my go pro 2

  • I’m frustrated
Just to update this post I installed Google Chrome to download from the Gopro site, this has cured the pop ups and allowed me to install the editing software (so to speak) I am still awaiting my new SD card. When that arrives I am a bit hessitant about downloading the latest version of software but I will and if all else fails I will send the lot off to Go-pro and tell them where to shove it. (ok maybe not) but thats how I feel. I think that I will go back to the supplier and get a refund and keep using my other cameras, ie gopro2!

  • I had this problem too. and I have the Sandisk 64 gig card... however it seems I just fixed it. but for how long I don't know.. I enabled the "show hidden folders" on my windows 8, and went onto the mem. card in my gopro and deleted all the extra files under the DCIM, 100GOPRO folder... there were a LOT of extra files for videos I had deleted in the past. now the GoPro works.

  • Hi all - I had the same problem with my Hero 3 Silver. It would record for 3 seconds and stop. I had the right card and settings. In fact I had tried all the recommended cards, which I later returned because they didn't make a difference-the problem was with the camera. I contacted GoPro and they replaced it under warranty and I had the new one within 2 weeks of the return. The new camera works well--as expected.

  • I just went into the camera menu and deleted all/format.
I think the problem was that the card couldn't handle that some of recorded videos was in 30 fps and others was 48 fps.
So I now hope that as long as I'm only recording with 30 fps, the problem wont come back. :)

  • I’m frustrated
Mine records for 4 seconds, shuts off. I take the battery out and put it in. It still does not work. I even put in a new battery and still.

I am a ten year old kid and saved my allowance ($5.00 a week) for a long time to by my go pro and all of there over-priced, waste of money, stupid acsessories thinking that it was worth it.

Lesson: Do not buy a GoPro! They don't work.

easy solution mine was doing the same thing on my hero3 black anywhere from 10 seconds to 30/40 ..go to settings mines on 720 at 60 fps then take the gopro from 12 mega pixel down to 7 mine now records full length with no probs .. quality of video is excellent ..im not using a sandisk memory card its just a cheap class 10 job ..dont know if this helps anyone else but its worked for me......

This is how I solved my problem. After I had my camera for a while, it would do as everyone is describing in this forum.

Root of Problem. If you make several different recordings early in the disk life, then delete those recordings using your computer, your disk becomes fragmented. Gopro needs a clean, unfragmented disk to write such large amounts of data on the fly.

Solution. Use the delete all files command within the menu on the Gopro. It is back in settings. Once you do this, the disk is no longer fragmented and the Gopro will record for a long time.

  • hey, ive found the solution. so back up all your videos on your PC or whatever (just clear your sd card). Then plug your gopro into your PC with your charger cable and and then your reformat it and it should work. My gopro only recorded for 6 seconds then jammed and stopped i was about to return it but then i thought maybe if i called gopro they could tell me what to do and it helped alot. Now my gopro is normal again. :)

I have a Hero 3+. It stops recording after 17 minutes every time. My card is a SanDisk ultra 64GB. Driving me nuts. I feel like throwing the thing in the bin

  • I’m amused!
It's amazing how many people post "I'm frustrated" for problem to which solutions were posted on this very thread long time ago.

OK, dudes. I said to myself I'm not going to bother anymore. But I'll post this summary for one last time.

    a) Make sure to update firmware to latest version. As of today, July 29 2013 firmware release for Hero3, or March 6 2014 for Hero3+.

    b) Make sure to use one of the recommended SD cards. You can find the list at http://gopro.com/support/articles/sof.... Or for your convenience, page currently lists these cards (and only these):

    SanDisk Extreme 32GB microSDHC (SDSDQXL-032G)
    SanDisk Extreme 64GB microSDXC (SDSDQXL-064G)
    Lexar 32GB SDHC 600x (LSDMI32GBSBNA600R)
    Lexar 64GB SDXC 600x (LSDMI64GBSBNA600R)
    Delkin 32GB SDHC (DDMICROSDPRO2-32GB)
    Delkin 64GB SDXC (DDMICROSDPRO264GB)

Pay attention to part numbers. There are two models of SanDisk Extreme, and only the one with part number SDSDQXL is on the recommended list. The other one is NOT on the list. GoPro is a bit slow about adding new cards to the list. There's plenty of other cards that should work just fine. But there's a reason to stick to only those on the list (see below).

Note that SanDisk Ultra is NOT on the list. And there's a reason why it is not on the list. A lot of people reported problems when they attempted to use SanDisk Ultra cards with Hero3. Ultra is an OK card for your smartphone or tablet. Or taking still images with your compact or point&shoot camera. And those are about recommended use cases for it if you look it up on SanDisk's own website. It's a bit too slow for your Hero3. Out of all class-10 cards I ever owned, Ultra is about the slowest card I ever bought.

If you use card not on the list of recommended cards and have recent enough firmware, camera will detect it and cap recording bitrate at 35 Mbit/s. This may (or may not) actually help if you do have SanDisk Ultra card. With cards on the recommended list, it will record at up to 45 Mbit/s. In other words, get the one from recommended list. And be careful part number matches the one from the list.

    c) Your memory card gets fragmented over time. Fragmentation will make it slower. Hero3 writes at high enough speed for fragmentation to become a problem sooner or later.

The best way to avoid problems that are due to fragmentation is to let camera format the card before you go out recording. Simply select "delete all" from camera's menu. Next best is to format the card from your Mac or PC. Dragging all the files into trash can is not the same thing is formatting the card.

Worst thing you can do is to delete some files, and leave other files on the card. Then repeat it over time. Avoid doing that at all costs. Always copy all files from the card to your Mac or PC, disconnect from your Mac or PC, then let the camera format the card.

    d) Almost every camera in existence will start writing to a new file once file size hits about 4GB (works out to about 12-17 minutes on Hero3, depending on the recording settings). Reasons are both technical and historic. Don't sweat about it. It's perfectly normal. The rest of your video is in the other file. There is no loss in quality. Just join the files in you favorite video editing software. If the first file is e.g. GOPR0013, once it hits 4GB in size recording will continue in file named GP010013, then GP020013, and so on (i.e. all files that belong to single video will have same last 4 digits in the name).

If your camera actually stops recording instead of switching to new file, there might be something wrong with the camera. Or you simply have a bit too slow card and camera can't switch to starting to write to new file fast enough.

    e) Have fun day making awesome videos out there.
