HD HERO won't run on/charge after new firmware update

Any reason why since the new firmware update, my camera won't charge/turn on?

  • Have you tried removing the battery and SD card to reset the unit? When you plug the camera in, does the red light illuminate? If you are not yet sure if the firmware updated, be sure not to have the LCD screen attached. If you have further issues with it, submit a support case or give us a call for further troubleshooting.

  • Allen there are many many of us with the same issue. Support just keeps repeating the same thing over & over “have you reformatted the card...have you removed the battery”

    I only wish i had bought the Contour instead...i really do. This was to be a birthday gift & now if i return the whole lot then i loose my $80 postage out plus another $20-$30 back so really we are stuck with getting warranty. Very sad way to do business. At least i have decided what company NOT to use next time.

    Mark, I totally understand your frustration but let me tell you, you are not going to have any less issues with a Contour. GoPro was at least willing to help me and replace the unit when it wasn't powering on. Contour just left me out dry. GoPro even sent me some free adhesive mounts for my trouble ;)

    I don't know, the way I figure it is that every electronics company has the potential for issues (you should have seen my support contacts with Canon) but what matters to me is how they handle it. You are entitled to your opinion but I respect GoPro's willingness to help out customers. I have yet to see the typical "they tried to tell me I got water in it" or "they said I must have altered it" that a lot of bullshit companies pull.

  • Nick im smelling a rat here with many of the replies to peoples issues in here. I am beginning to believe that a lot these replies are from Gopro themselves. I belong to a lot of forums & the wording just isnt right for normal every day peer to peer talking.

    A rat? Because I am commenting on my experience with Contour? Haha. Just as adamantly as I will trash talk a shitty company, I will defend one that has treated me well.

    Contour has repeatedly left me out to dry, and GoPro has always helped me. Just sharing my experience so you don't end up trashing your GoPro prematurely.

    If you are going to pretend that an electronics company will not have the possibility for faults, you are kidding yourself bro. I had one camera that would not power on, and the other my latch broke the first day. Was I pissed, hell yes, but they took care of me. If you don't want me chiming in to your shit, then I won't. Just thought I could be of some assistance.

    • I would suspect several MJ however i can supply you with my full contact details & possibly 8-10 copies of emails from me to Gopro trying to get a resolution. I can back up anything i have said including video (my 7D) of my Gopro not working beside all the boxes it came in along with the 3 copies of invoices (why 3 i dont know) and i think the packing slip is still on the box.

      I just want a camera that works & not to have to pay shipping costs when the item did not work from the second that firmware loaded onto it. Honestly the camera was out of its packet for under 5 mins before it died. If it had died at 6 months or 8 or what ever it would be maybe better but it died immediately & i get to now pay more (im not in the US) & wait a lot longer as Gopro have told me that they will not air post my replacement..surface only.
    • Not hate, but when I purchase there product and it dies because of their LCD. I think I have the right to be a little bothered.

  • Sucks that you had to get a defective camera (although it is confusing as you said it worked until you did the firmware update maybe you did something wrong), I'd be pissed to, but not to the point I would walk away from gopro. I love their camera, couldn't be happier but I've also never had any problems with mine and my kid beats the hell out of it.

    I have never tried another pov camera but since someone was throwing out the name Contour I decided to search for them on here and they run a forum as well. Looking through all their problems, I would suffice to say that you may not be any happier over on that side of the fence. Kinda a grass is greener approach in my book.

  • I did nothing wrong with the camera. It worked for the 4 seconds i turned it on when i first got it however i then followed Gopros online instructions to get the LCD firmware onto the camera & thats it...it died.

    Im pissed as it cost me $80 US to get the camera shipped here & now i have to pay maybe another $20-30 on surface mail to send it back let alone the time involved. I mean its not my fault that the software & the camera i rec’d have issues, this isnt for the consumer to sort out. The item was brand new & it didnt work with the LCD.

    All i ever asked in my emails to Gopro is that they warranty postage back to them because its clearly not fit for sale...thats it, nothing more. Honestly im now paying to cover their problem, this thing has cost me enough already, about $530 with all the mounts etc.

    I took my new Hero camera out of the box yesterday and plugged it to the computer to charge. I'm not 100% percent sure but don't believe the red LED came on as the instructions say it should when the battery is charging.

    This morning I installed the firmware update by first putting it directly on the SD card using the computer and then putting the SD into the camera. The update seemed to go OK but after that I haven't been able to turn the camera on at all. The ONLY reaction I can get from it is 3 beeps and blinks of the red LED when I hold the shutter button.

    I have a track event tomorrow that I was hoping to film but that's obviously not going to happen anymore.

    I work at Quiksilver, picked up my cam, a LCD Bacpac, and a spare battery... Had it for over a month, used it in and out of the water, longboarding and surfing... MAybe you guys just have bad luck. And I emailed them about PURCHASING a new thumb bolt because i lost mine, they sent me two thumb bolts WITH the Nuts FOR free... Maybe you guys just have some bad karma or somethin, try doin some community service or somethin...

  • I bought my camera back in April. Uploaded firmware and dead just like above. I recorded 4 seconds of video once. Opened a case, did not get resolved and felt like noone at gopro was willing to do much about it. I am now going to try and send it back for replacement. Lets see how that goes. Win or lose me as a customer.

  • Got the exact dame problem as above! Have used my Go pro with succes and without issues for over a year until I did the Firmware update. i feel like digging a hole and organize a ceramonial funural because it's dead.
    it keeps charching for ever and I can't turn it on anymore. I really miss my Gopro HD.

  • I'm also having this problem.: been using the camera on and off for a year, bought the LCD bacpac, did the firmware upgrade, and now the camera won't turn on at all. I've tried everything mentioned on this site and what I've found elsewhere on the web. I've submitted a support case, as Chris the employee suggested above. Thinking positive. I'll let you know what happens.

  • After a lot of delay on my part I pushed back for them to look at my camera in house. I basically said I spent more time than acceptable trying to sort it myself. They recieved my camera replied by email 2 days after recieving it & shipped out "new" replacement. Very satisfied now. Only complaint was they would not extend warranty which I expected & I took great care packing my camera & replacement was not packed as good.

  • This is a follow-up to my earlier post: I submitted a support case on xmas day, and GoPro replied the following day (which was, by the way, a Monday holiday). After a quick exchange on troubleshooting, they said that they would honor the warranty, even though it was a few weeks over the 1-year period. Great customer service, as far as I'm concerned.

  • If you think that Contour may be bad, just deal with Tachyon after dropping a couple of hundred bucks on one. Deal with the flip people and have fun in doing so.

    I have been following several GoPro sites, as to customer satisfaction and how they respond to both real problems and perceived problems. Pretty good service in most cases by what I have seen at various sites. I had an issue with a card reader and ended up pitching the thing after dealing with all the repeated standard fixes the company kept sending to me. I don't even recall the name of the company, but their service was really bad and reminded me of all the times I have spent on the phone with automated voices and the frustration of dealing with a tech from a foreign country who could speak English, but just could not understand it. I am glad the positive posts are showing that GoPro does indeed have some good rapport with their customers. I believe all the shill stuff or suggestions of such here are a bit paranoid. No company will always please everyone, but it seems to me that the history is pretty good with GoPro so far. Of course, I say that and yet I have not actually had to use them myself, so far. Knock on wood! :-)

    It is entirely possible that the camera problem is something that is actually simple in nature and just not as complex as it initially appears. It may indeed be a firmwear update problem though, but we shall see. When someone gets really frustrated, it is easy enough to lose track of a good fix and start pointing fingers. Be nice to figure out just what the real fix actually was, without the frustration getting in the way. Always nice to hear the positive and helpful to hear the negative, as well, as long as the negative is factual. Both probably help GoPro to find solutions and improve their customer relations even more.

  • hey just updated the firmware about 2 days ago and ever since then the camera will seem like its recording a video when i start riding and about 10 mins in i stop the recording (to make it easier to edit) but then it wont start another recording and beeps 4 times and then when i get home it says the vid is corrupt and wont play i dont know if it is the way it is mounted on the bike (yz250f) its on the handlebars with a short extention for less vibration but it records normaly when i have it at home testing it

    My brand new Gopro Hero2 is going back. I just hope that the store will let me have an instant exchange. I wanted to use the camera on a scuba trip coming up soon.

    Right out of the box, after fulling charging, I could not get the camera to start. It eventually started after pressing the power button but way way after. I wasn't even touching it at the time it came on. Instead I was online trying to find out what I might be doing wrong.

    The second day I got it to come on again but I could not get it to respond otherwise after that. I can't image trying to fool with it and getting it to work on a scuba dive.

    I am willing to try another one if provided for free but I don't want this defective unit. I hope this is just an aberration in quality control at GoPro.

  • I had the same problem but i wasnt even sure if the firmware updated yet. all i took was take out the sd card and battery, i plugged it in without the battery and the red light started flashing, then i popped the battery back in and it kept charging:)

  • I've used my HD Hero 2 every day for four months on my ride to and from work. Also while running errands around town. For those four months I had NO problems. NONE. Now after the firmware update it's fried! Won't record, won't turn off, won't do jack! I can take out the battery and pop it back in and that alows me to scroll through the menu. But that's all it will do. GoPro better get on the ball with this one! They basically had millions of their loyal (maybe not now) customers download a virus! I've gotten no response after sending several emails to tech support! WTF GoPro?!

  • Same issues as above. Bought myself the Hero 3 with LCD BacPac as a Xmas present. Unboxed it, inserted battery, charged it, put in an SD card and followed firmware update instructions to the letter and the result is a unit as dead as a dodo. Never got the chance to use it. Waiting for a response from GoPro Supprt (I think they are very busy!). Hmmmm. :-(

  • My H3B worked fine until I ran the battery dead shooting video. Now the camera won't start even when I put on the external battery pack. Tried all the tricks of removing the micro-sd and battery for serveral minutes, tried different micro-sd cards, tried hooking up to USB and turning on.

    Nothing works. Tested the internal battery with digital voltmeter and got about 3.46 volts.

    Currently hooked up and hopefully charging with just the main battery in and connected to USB cable. Red light is dimly lit in the top left corner of the camera back, but I'm not getting any light on the front. I thought the light on the front flashed red while battery was charging.

    So my Gopro Hero is the best camera ever (except the fact that it had no screen).
    Well, after two years of being screenless I decided it was time to get one. I was super excited when I got the package, new back parts to my case and a slick looking screen to go with (hell yes).

    Me: "Its basically brand new, no scratches or anything, your firmware update just killed it".
    CS: "We don't cover damages done by jailbreaking"
    Me: "It was YOUR update! From the GoPro website!"
    CS: "We don't provide jailbreak downloads for our products"
    Me "Well, its not an iPhone, its also not a jailbreak, ITS AN UPDATE SO I CAN USE THE SCREEN I JUST SPENT MY WHOLE PAYCHECK ON!
    CS: "Maybe you bought a european screen?"
    ME: "No, I bought the GoPro screen, from GoPro, for GoPro. Basically I buy a $250 camera thats never given me a problem, and a screen. Just so you guys can shit all over me. I just would've thought that since it was YOUR update that was the death of my camera, you could help me in some way"
    CS: "You could buy the Hero 2"
    Me: *Click*

    I've never felt so scammed...

    We'll just put out a screen, and when they buy it, they'll have to update, and when they update, they'll be screwed! and when they're screwed, they'll buy a new camera to go with the screen that they never got to use! Its the perfect cycle.

    Bravo.

    I'm done with your childish customer service and incomplete cameras that need other things to be a functioning camcorder.

    If someone is going to take all my money, its going to be Canon, at least my stuff will work...

  • Got my Hero 3 Silver for christmas and downloaded and installed the latest firmware, it worked fine for 2 days. Next morning it was completely dead. No lights, no sound, nothing. Tried charging through the PC, laptop and wall plug...flatlining all the way. Glad my Hero 2 still works!

    Just bought a new Hero 2 today. Straight out of the box it was temperamental turning on (kept having to pull battery to get any response from the power button). Now I've run the firmware update and it's dead. Have opened a support call but am tempted just to return to retailer and wash my hands of it. I'd always wanted a Go Pro after watch loads of videos shot with one, but this one has left a bad taste.

    hey i have had a hero 3 for about 2 months now and just had the same problem. to fix it i pulled the battery and the sd card out, hooked it up to my computer. then it beeped and the little screened showed it was hooked up. then while still plugged in i put the battery back in and the sd card in and let it charge. then i turned it on. my computer told me to reformat the card, so i did and now everything works fine again.

    this was really frustrating and took forever to figure out especially because i am on vacation and i checked the camera before i left town it was working fine.

    i still think gopro is a good product. i just tried to fix it instead of bitching
